i think the better question might be........why wouldn't people hate america?

i'll have a longer answer later after the kids are in bed. I actually have an unusual perspective here....considering i have family from other countries.....we have this conversation quite often actually.

i visit different chat rooms on politics from time to time, and what I hear sometimes is foreigners think :

"U.S. foreign and domestic policy has killed and enslaved millions."

That is not my thinking, believe me. I think we are the greatest country in the world, or I would move somewhere else!

  • crybabylu said on Jun 22, 2008....

Some might want to shoot me over this answer, but my mama always told me "not to air my dirty laundry in public"

I think that is exactly what we as Americans do!

We get on these chatrooms (not me) and different blogs and are constantly critizing our own government and policies that we disagree with. There are bloggers here that even come out and say that we are KILLERS, and I have been guilty at times of "airing" my own disatisfaction, and I can't help but think that we are part of the problem.

But I think the worst offenders are the Media.

  • papajack said on Jun 22, 2008....

personally, I 'm appauled at the bickering that goes on in our goverment. they both use the media to air their grieances.  the conservatives say they can't do anything about the oil problem because of the democrats.  the democrats say the same thing about the republicans.

The democrats came out accusing the administration about the war.  Now, if the world thinks we went into Iraq for oil, aren't they going to hate us?

if i can join in again...... people in america really aren't all that different from people in other countries. call me unamerican if you like....but i'd be equally as happy....and possibly more free....living in canada. australia even. italy, great britain, and many many other countries. people get a bad view of america for the very statement that duke made......in our opinion this IS the greatest country in the world. well....truth is..... there are bad things about this place.....there are bad things about other places. there are good things about other places. did you know that there are more "family values" in Italy? did you know that Canada has more personal freedoms than we do? Did you know that France has more labor rights? many many other countries already HAVE in place what we fought so hard for. did you know that in great britain the racial equality we are still striving for and often failing at here has been in place there for decades? has god forsaken other countries? or does god have a special place in his heart for us? we claim we have freedom here. i grew up so thankful that i'd grown up here...because of that very sentiment. true....there are places in the world that are difficult and have many problems...... but aren't people just people? don't they all have children? and want happiness too? what sets us apart....i mean truly.

One thing I know we have, despite the recent raid on the FLDS compound in Texas, is the freedom of religion

If nothing else, that raid proved it!

They were chastised by the courts for not having proof of abuse, and many think it was really about religion.   I have no personal opinion about the Texas raid, I only use it as an example that we do have freedom of religion here.

Some countries do and some don't . In some countries, you have to declare your religion, and you are not allowed by law to change it.  So, no converting to any other relgion execpt the one you originally declare!

  • crybabylu said on Jun 22, 2008....

    Another thing about America!

When there is a disaster anywhere around the world, we are usually the first to respond with aid.  Even to countries who don't like us.  We help with financial and medical, and food, etc...

  • curmudgeon said on Jun 22, 2008....
Funny that racial equlality was not credited for France, because there is no egalite there. As far as freedom in Canada, try emigrating there from America with no money and see how fast they kick you back here to the States. Great Britian's racial equality hasn't stopped it from following us right into wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

None of the countries mentioned have populations even remotely as diverse as the United States.

If other countries are really so much better than the United States by any measure you can name, why are so many people coming here, often from those very same countries mentioned, to live? That's what perplexes me whenever some academic puts us 35th or whatever on some aspect of standards of living.

We seem to offer the world so precious little, yet so many prefer to come to this benighted part of the planet and put down roots.

For all of its faults, people the  world over still understand that America offers freedom, opportunity to work and live and succeed, and all of the security and stability the greatest military force ever fielded can provide.

Yes, this is the greatest country in the world and I certainly hope we remain so well beyond my own lifetime.
  • RollingC said on Jun 22, 2008....
Geeesh....what country is it that makes you declare your religion and then can't change it.  I've lived in other countries in South America and Labor laws down there are actually better than here in the U S.
For instance : if anyone gets fired or let go the company must pay you a month's salary thereby givin you a time period in which to get settled with another job.
But in spite of all it's faults, there's no better place for me to live in even though I truly enjoy living in other countries down south.
Must admit that if I didn't have family members there I might think twice about it.
Bottom line is that if you got what it takes...money, degrees, etc., you can live good anywhere but as for the common worker making a lower income wage I prefer this country.

You know what? I am American and I'm very angry at the way our government treats other countries and their people. We as a people should be embarrassed about that. BUT, we are also the first to lend a hand when another country needs help, as in the earthquakes in China. That makes me proud, though our response to our own disasters could certainly be improved dramatically.

From what I read Irag citizens, depending on what neighborhood they live in, will lie as to which group of muslim they follow...sometimes just to remain alive.

America, for better or worst....lov it or leave it, no one is forcing anyone to come and surely not forcing any to stay.

In fact, its my personal opinion that if we closed our borders to all immigration into the country for four years, it couldn't hurt.

The diversity of Americans is the problem with America's image.  Every country in the world now has immigrants in America, and those immigrants  carried their own personal hate from the countries they came from to here.  They call themselves Americans, while barely able to speak English if at all.

I am not an immigrant lover.  I do not support massive immigration to America.  I support sending those illegally here packing back from whence  they came.  I do not want to bring others here to learn our businesses or be trained in our technologies.   I do not want to pay for raising immigrants children or for their educations.

America, lov it or leave it.  No middle ground and no coddling of immigrants whatsoever.  Gather them, tag them and ship them...back.

    Jess,

Thank you for commenting.  I liked your post.  I think if Americans are going to just complain, maybe they should ask themselves if this is where they really want to be.

Now, as far as immigration.  This is where we differ.

Very few people will admit that they are not opposed to immigrants from Mexico being here without permision.  I personally do not want them rounding them all up and sending them back.

I have never agreed with Pres. Bush even once, except when he proposed the worker program.  That we let the ones that are here, apply for the worker program.  That they would have to return during that time and apply to be here.

I couldn't believe the uproar that ensued from that.  I think they do a lot of jobs no one else wants to do.  As far as paying taxes.  Taxes are taken out of their paychecks, yet they aren't elligible to get refunds.

I do see a problem with education and hospitalization.  That would have to be worked out.  Thanks again for posting your views.

Well, we can agree we disagree on immigration.

And as to illegal immigrants paying taxes, I can show you living proof to the contrary right in North Carolina.

Entire immigrants camps chuck full of illegal immigrants ...that work daily for cash labor only or cash and housing combined, no taxes.

I can show you whole communities that on the weekends.... the locals are forced away from strip malls and flea markets by an onslaught of bus after bus load of illegal immigrants that arrive simultaneously literally expelling hundreds of illegal aliens who can't speak a word of English and not interested in learning.... they won't be here long, whole camps often disappear like gypsy's in the night....only to refill with newly arrived immigrants and the process continues each day, each week and every month in North Carolina even as I write this to you Dee.

I can show you the same buses lining up daily before the county social services bldgs., where Medicaid and food stamps are meted out everyday to non citizens ...but for holiday or weekends, they are County workers after all.  ; )

Then, I can show you where schools had to expand and/or be built ...new in numbers due to illegal immigrants alleged right to send their children to our schools.

The law says all school age children "must" be schooled and verifiable.  Thus... you will hear the immigrant's claim to that of which is their right, ....but no, I say... it's our law w/ regards to our citizens and I highly doubt illegal aliens indelible rights would have fostered even a consideration when being drafted, otherwise that law would have included the word or words to include  " illegal " immigrants as well.  It's not their right....it an American citizens right as well as the law.

But thats a side of the coin those in favor of allowing illegal immigration don't flip to.... mainly because in their own worlds, they are benefiting some how from illegal aliens .....or they 're lives are totally independent of illegal aliens and could care otherwise.

I care.  Gather um, tag um and ship um.  Close our boarders for four years and clean house in those fours years as well.

Then, get in line if ya want after four years...but stand in it from your own country.

This American's view....independent yet absolute  in it.

People have a bad opinion of america because of thew government, people don't like how our lives are affected by the actions of the american government, I don't personally dislike every single person in america, but I do dislike the dependancy the world has upon the country and in my opinion that is where the dislike spurns from.

Also as I have seen is mentioned earlier there is the general opinion that american's are pushy - now I have met some lovely americans so please dont shoot me!!! but there is the opinion from people I have spoken to about this that American's are loud and opinionated and flashy. Now this may not be the case for everyone but from tv - and american actors and actresses do tend to dominate the media, we can see that quite often the American actors tend to play dominating, brash and pushy roles that many people dislike.

However I will reinforce that this isnt all my opinion and the bits that are even I am not shallow minded enough to encompass all American's into this generalisation because as I have said I have met and know some lovely American's!!

i guess i'm just in opinion with an unusual view....and many might hate me for it....or laugh at me....that's fine.
but i see myself as a global citizen.
now i'm not saying that the whole world should be under one government. that's not it at all.
what i am saying is that people everywhere are just people.
the same needs and wants. The american government has made MASSIVE mistakes in the past and in the present. Other governments have also made such massive mistakes.
as to immigration......jessi being native i can see her point. But as to the rest of you....i know i wouldn't be here if they had shut off immigration.
My Italian great grandmother came through ellis island when she was 7.
My english ancestors came over on the mayflower.
My french ancestors came down from canada.
there are too many to list completely

even among other animals this is a natural occurrence....if something isn't working...or it gets to crowded you move! the only difference is that the animals don't immediately start going to war with the locals to take over the land.

i guess i just don't believe that america is special, or has divine rights. i see it as extreme hubris. the same as we've accused the french of or great britain of or many other countries of.
what americans will not get past is the fact that they aren't special.

Speaking as a Canadian, a large portion of us are brought up to dislike Americans. I like you guys on an individual basis, but on a larger scale, my experiences with Americans has been very negative. I work in a busy popular night club that get alot of American businessmen. I haven't met many I've liked yet and its been almost 5 years.
These men come into my bar, flash U.S money around like its priceless and then get real ugly when they realise no one is paying any attention or giving special priveleges to them. They want to be waited on hand and foot and very rarely do they tip. This bar is a strip club, so its only men from the States, but next to new immigrants from South Asia, Americans are the most frequently bounced for bad behaviour with the ladies and getting in arguments with the servers. I would guess I've served probably 800 Americans in the bar over the years, and I can think of only three exceptions to this. A group of three truckers from the south who had more manners than Julia Child and had the presence of mind to exchange thier money before they went out.

Now I don't think that having met 800 Americans in a limited environment  is neccessarily a fair cross section of the population, but its sure soured me.
And lets of course not forget the real reason I personally don't like America (in a larger sense,). The foreign policy sucks! They want a hand in everything from oil to mining, and they're not afraid to squash anyone in their path, yet they're the loudest hollering at other countries to change their evil ways! Canada isn't much better with out own pretentiousness regarding foreign policy, but in an economical sense, we don't have much of a choice if we want any part of a market that we have to share with out pushy neighbours form the south.

There are of course worse countries out there with worse foreign and domestic policies, but for the most part, the denziens of those countries are hurting just as much as the people and businesses their govornment is abusing. The difference with the U.S is most Americans feel their country is faultless and fair.

I certainly understand that America has its faults, but it's my country, I was born here, and so I love this country more than any other. I've been to quite a few other places on this planet and there's still nowhere else that compares to the US.

Let's understand that Americans in American strip clubs can get obnoxious too, it's got nothing to do with us pushing Canadians around out of some inherent arrogance.

There was something I read on the Net a while back about why some people in other countries hate Americans. And you know what? Most often the problem was that when a large group of Americans came through somewhere - say a popular tourist spot or the military - the few who left a bad impression were the ones that were remembered. Who fought in your restaurant? An American. Who yelled and made a scene? An American. Who raped your daughter? An American. Who got you pregnant and then went home without a word? An American. As is usually the case, if the locals do the same thing it's just bad. But if a foreigner does it then it's much much worse. Is your own government screwing you around? Vote them out next time. Is the American government screwing around with your country. Burn the Stars and Stripes and curse them all to hell.

It's not just Americans. I met a New Zealander once who said all Canadians were assholes. When I talked to him more I found he had only met two and had had bad experiences with both (one of them was known as a total jerk to all foreigners int he area). As it turned out, that Kiwi was rather a loudmouth and most obnoxious himself. In Peru I heard that Israelis were rude and troublesome. Then I met two guys from Israel who were perfect gentlemen and most diplomatic.

In defense of Americans, there is just as high a percentage of nice people in the U.S. as there is anywhere else. Americans are often criticised for their ignorance of other countries and cultures but there are plenty of Americans who know very well the cultures of the countries in which they have interest.

I think the biggest issue is that Americans tend to give the impression that they are the best, America is the best, and some things they brag about are actually the same of even better in other countries. Like some have said, America isn't perfect. It is still a great country and certainly safer that many countries in the world. But coming from Canada I can recall having our fair share of disagreements about certain issues and usually it something that was okay if the U.S. imposed it but if Canada did the same then they cried foul south of the border. The old double standard.

As far as the U.S. being a magnet for immigrants there are a couple of things to keep in mind. One is that there are many people immigrating to other countries too. Canada, Australia and many European countries now too, have great cultural diversity in their immigrant populations (Japan's immigrant population is slowly growing too). One reason why the U.S. has more immigrants by number is that the U.S. just has more money. If you want to leave your poor life and go somewhere to start a new living you want freedom of rights (pick from a number of countries) and the opportunity to make a good living. The U.S. has long since been the symbol of prosperity - big house, two car garage, nice yard.

So much to be said. But I gotta go. The U.S. is a great country but not without faults. I would say to Americans when you meet with foreigners at home or abroad, just try to make a good impression. That does wonders.

"Entire immigrants camps chuck full of illegal immigrants ...that work daily for cash labor only or cash and housing combined, no taxes.  "

Wow, that's amazing!  Tell me, how are they able to get by without actually spending that money (and thus paying taxes)?  They probably pay a higher percentage of taxes than you do.  People with low incomes can't afford to buy and keep things in bulk so they end up paying lots of sales tax on more expensively priced smaller batches.  As for income tax, do you really think they're living that far above the poverty line?
  • hottips4u said on Jun 25, 2008....
    Poverty line ?  hehe....

You think not ?  Take a ride in Johnston County NC.  Harnet NC or Clinton County NC.

Knowing  what your talking about might help and its obvious you haven't a clue and talking just to talk for attention.

Illegal immigrants have two rights :

    1  Be arrested in America.

    2  Be deported from America.

From newborn thru adult .... apprehend, and deport.  Born here via illegal immigrants ?  Be adopted out or leave with your illegal parent(s).

Personally, I report every farmer or company I suspect is using illegal labor and to some degree, pretty successful.  They have either moved out of the area or was apprehended and deported.  Landlords to illegal aliens are reported as well.

Any and all that support illegal aliens support human slavery, drug and human trafficking as well.

I just wish our Gov would put a price on their heads as bounties...make hunting them down more sporting and help cover gas to be rid of the vermin.

    Jessi.

I find it strange that a lot of the folks from other countries say similar things - they don't hate Americans, just disagree with American foreign policy.

But aren't there other powerful countries that do reprehensible things? No one criticised France for unilaterally invading Cote d'Ivoire a year or so ago. Who has said word one about Great Britain going along with us in Iraq and Afghanistan? Australia threw in us as well, but how much anti-Aussie yap is there? How about the fact that UN peacekeepers have been reported to be using child prostitutes in Africa?

Anyone up for criticizing India's horrid environmental record?

It seems to me that there's plenty of blame to be spread around for humanity's suffering, but Americans are the only ones catching flak from it.

How about looking to your own faults before pointing out ours?

    Guantanamo Bay of America

HARTFORD, CT Friday The 13th. One family guy with his wife and two young kids were standing up front of the Governor Office in the State Capitol of Connecticut and States Supreme Court .One man protest was about patriot act , hate crime, civil liberties and racial profiling for people of color. The letter he was handing to the people was about asking Justice from the federal government. This administration's anti-terrorism practices on Brown (Dust Colored) people represent a stunning assault on basic principles of justice, government accountability, and the role of the courts. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King is his hero as his letter says at the bottom. The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The social tragedies that resulted from this new system of racial profiling should be the center point of our discussion. The allusion that created with this new capitalist system the " War on Terror " is govern by the terrorist to monitor minority interest, affairs and freedom of minority which has created mental health issue all over the world . What life would you expect for the minority under such pressure and some laws which are legislated to preserve special interest in the mind of the Leader of the Land ? It is time for UN to legislate a new humanity act in the light of minority welfare by not neglecting the welfare of those who are Brown (Dust Colored). By signing patriot act we are engaged in a constant struggle and a continuous fight to prove that we are patriotic citizen it feels like we are living in the Guantanamo Bay in America. Democratic mentality should preserve the minority's vital structure and defend them against injustice before mental, spiritual and moral values desire justice. The virus of this new democracy which started with this Administration is neglecting the welfare of those who are Pakistani, Indians and Middle Eastern but with human faith. It is natural that under spying system minority will loss its interest of life or other such matters. The difference between old and new democratic system is the human dignity is under threat.

The only way of democracy is love and humanity not war. The painful condition that is destroying world best democracy is not understanding Culture, religious and political problems in nations where democracy is nothing but another English word like ( dam crazy) People cannot be happy under a rule or system where spiritual and moral values are in danger. Knowledge is the only source toward establishing a basic philosophy of humanity (Rabi). The old system of desegregation is deeply rooted in the distant time of human history. It has driven humanity into a long and nonsense struggle in the ideological fields. It is time to adopt new ideological principal of life and for this universe. My social love was stripped away for a while after singing the patriot act in the chain of tragedies. It is time to start silencing human nature to create true nature of human faith by realizing that we all have trust in God (Rab) and faith in humanity (Rabi). Human faith has great respect for all religion especially Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. It is time for realty check and teaching respect for life and accepts responsibility for the offspring we create and for the environment. We should not wait for that day in which the human code council will put bar-code on 10 to 12 billion peoples. It is time to stop growing army of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism .The complications of this current method of dividing wealth, education and health and introducing democracy by force are wrong. How could a human being aspire to freedom in any field when he is deprived of the freedom of his life?

Human faith method of teaching moral values and humanity can give realistic purpose of achieving complete fulfillment of internal life. The spiritual change from loneness to loveliness is based on love by giving unlimited trust in God (Rab). Human mind is miracle of Supreme Being when we struggle to boil it at luck warm temperature of wisdom to understand fundamental of life by reading (Rabi). The ever lasting stage of satisfaction for mind is to reach Supreme Being before death. The journey of memories can be pleasant with nine affirmations of human faith. We believe that it is time to joggle every conscious to show them that human mind is superior matter not material. The festival of life can be celebrated with wisdom of human faith knowledge once we realize that we are part of the superior race. It advocates spiritual and moral principles on very high scales for the longest term in human history. Human faith is Adam's monotheistic faith and knows that God is the creator and overseer of the universe at all the time and all matters. It is time to modernize our faith by adopting true faith and educate mankind in accordance with basic principle of life.

IN GOD WE TRUST WE HAVE FAITH IN HUMANITY

because our president, unlike Clinton and Jimmy Farter, is standing up to
our enemies and treating them like enemies instead of noble people who are
just misunderstood. When a group of a-holes come over here and blow up
several buildings and kill a couple of thousand innocent men, women, and
children, the president and I know what they are -- THEY ARE THE ENEMY.
They get treated like an enemy, and not like a citizen (like one of those
many innocents slain). You can see how that sort of treatment might fly in
the face of all the politically correct morons now inhabiting the world, not
just our country. I say, so be it. Tough love. We have to prove to the world
that we will not stand for that sort of terrorist behavior. Our lives depend on
it, but we have forgotten that because that same president has kept us safe
for all the years since 9/11/2001. And how do we repay him? By spitting in
his face. Are you future presidents listening? That is how your gallant
service will be rewarded ... by politically correct morons spitting in your
face. Oh well, we may all be spitting in Borax's face soon enough. I guess
    that is something.

Criticism of one's nation is no sign of hate.
I criticize our actions because I hope to make us greater.

Nothing was ever improved with pride, satisfaction, or self-congratulations.

People asking the question "Why do you hate America?" are under the delusion that accepting everything America is and does is the only way you can love your country.

The only perfect thing there is to love is God.
All other things we love can be changed for the better.

We're not talking about patriotic dissent. We're talking about foreigners who hate America.

    Patriotic dissent DOES NOT include:

    Bush is a terrorist
    Bush is a meanie
    Bush is stupid
    Bush is a warmonger
    Bush is an evil oilman
Bush is avenging the plot on his Dad
    We are the terrorists
    Our soldiers are baby killers
We deserved 9/11 because of (fill in liberal blather here)

Unfortunately, this is the level to which most dissent in this country has lowered itself.

    Fill in conservative blather here.

Jerry Falwell (about 9/11): "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."

Check it out out at Snopes.com.

Bush may or may not be a terrorist. He is, however, in all probability a war criminal. And if the man who prosecuted Charles Manson thinks so that just might be saying something.

Kelly - As a New Yorker, I didn't agree with what Falwell said either. However, Falwell doesn't represent all conservatives, especially those of us who aren't socially conservative.

But the vast bulk of liberal dissent has indeed followed the themes I have outlined from prominent journalists to professional agitators.

Bush cannot be a "war criminal" without the aid, support and cooperation of our soldiers, interrogators, intelligence professionals, telecommunications and other electronics experts, weapons manufacturers and so on.

You are focusing all of your ire on one man because it's politically untenable to rightly indict the entire system - including those Democrats who voted to authorize the war and continue to fund the war even though they control the House and Senate. If Bush is a war criminal, then so are John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, but no anti-war hypocrites are talking of impeaching or indicting them.

"When shall it be said in any country of the world, my poor are happy, neither ignorance or distress is to be found among them; my jails are empty of prisoners, my streets of beggars; the aged are not in want, the taxes not oppressive; the rational world is my friend because I am friend of its happiness. When these things can be said, then may that country boast of its constitution and government ." - Thomas Paine

    Xenophobe?

I don't fear or loathe other countries, I just love my own more than any other. Neither do I fear the people of myriad nationalities who live in my neighborhood.

Every single response reveals you to be more and more patheticially ignorant and given to snap judgments, innacurate generalizations and downright second grade attempts at insult.

    How uncouth.

I'm reading "Cat's Cradle" by the late writer Kurt Vonnegut. Today I came across these interesting sentences. Keep in mind that this book was published in 1963.

Page 97 - "I was very upset about how Americans couldn't imagine what it was like to be something else, to be something else and be proud of it."

Page 98 - "The highest form of treason... is to say that Americans aren't loved wherever they go, whatever they do... American foreign policy should recognize hate rather than imagine love... People are hated a lot of places... Americans, in being hated, were simply paying the normal penalty for being people, and... they were foolish to think they should somehow be exempted from that penalty."

Of course the people whose remarks are quoted here were, in the story, accused of being communists for writing such things.

Yes, well that's a bunch of BS.  Bush wanted to be the maximum leader and now that he's fucked everything up he gets to pay the price.  It does help to illustrate, however, that conservatives definitely do not believe in personal responsibility any more than anyone else.

What this country needs right now is another Harry Truman....
This is my response to the chaos going on in right now....
I just wanted to hear what the majority plans to do. I thought the last debate went to Obama. McCain sounded like Bush lite. He's into Pinocchio politics. What do you think?...
Or how I learned to stop being a sexist and love a woman...
This is one of those issues I'm on the fence about and found this debate between the different sides interesting. ...
