I had a friend who used to come to my house and watch pro boxing matches from Mexico. The fights were not at the highest level, but we enjoyed them anyway. It's a different game at a low level, but still interesting. I'd compare it to college football, not at NFL level but the games can still be good.

There are a few MMA upstarts getting on tv. One is on HD Net and is called Sportfight. They show low level fights and they have their stupid little championships, but the fights can still be interesting.

I saw three fights on the June 20th card. One was Fabiano Scherner vs. Mychal Clark. Fabiano Scherner was the only guy on the whole card I had heard of before. He's a big Brazilian jiu jitsu guy, not the best, but knows what he's doing. Out of shape, a little too fat to be in this game, not that great. Clark is a young black guy who boxes. But all the MMA guys have to learn some jiu jitsu if they want to survive, and obviously Clark learned some.

Scherner won the first round easily by using his knowledge of body positioning. If you are laying on top of your opponent the whole time and bopping him around, you win the round, no? He tried some submission holds, and Clark impressed me by getting out of them. One was really dramatic, because Scherner was bending Clark's arm behind him in a kimura, Clark was fighting it all the way, and then Clark powered his arm straight, no longer bent, no longer in a kimura, and was soon out of it.

In the second round Clark was outboxing the tired and old Scherner. Scherner didn't seem to want to play this game anymore. Clark got on top of him and punched for a bit, and Scherner cried uncle. The end. Then Scherner started limping around and complaining about his knee. Whatever. I think he just gassed out because he didn't look in shape. It was only a Sportfight contest, not going to win him anything.

Then there were two big shlubs, Justin Moody and DJ Linderman, basically two big fat shlubs who can fight. Moody entered wearing a t shirt that said I Hate Hippies. Anyone who talks about how he hates people is a prick, which is what the color commentator Frank Trigg basically said as well. Bush league.

Linderman was a bit fatter than Moody. They were both maybe 260 with big bellies, but Linderman's belly was even bigger than Moody's. They were both novices at MMA, Tough Guy type fighters who took some BJJ lessons because they are mandatory in this game.

In the first round they played rock em sock em robots with each other. Bong! Bong! Neither one of their heads flew off but blood sprayed all over the people in the first few rows. In the second round Linderman beat up Moody. It was really a question of punching accuracy. Some of Linderman's shots landed just right. Moody wasn't hitting right on the button as much. It wasn't power, it was accuracy that determined the outcome. They both had power.

The last fight I saw so far was their "heavyweight championship fight". Yeah right. Their "champion" is a big fat dude who won their world championship in his first professional fight, over someone I never heard of. He was defending his "title" for the first time. The two guys are both named Josh. Josh Queen vs. Josh Bennett. Bennett lost earlier in his career to Mychal Clark, so I don't know why they didn't make Queen fight Clark.

It was a very interesting fight. The two Joshes were another pair of big fat rock em sock em robots. Lots of blood spraying all over the place. At least these two were likeable. Queen ended up getting the best of it by far, and when Bennett was about done, Queen got him in a jiu jitsu choke and Bennett tapped out. Funny that the fight goes down as a submission victory by Queen via rear naked choke, since that wasn't what the fight was about at all. Bennett was done, and Queen sat on him and choked him, but it was really just two bar bouncers pounding each other.

If you thought Showtime's and CBS's Elite XC with Kimbo Slice was Minor League, well, that's Triple A but HD Net is just A level, the lowest of the Minor Leagues. They even show amateur bouts. Those are interesting too. Guys not too much better than you. They'd beat you but you'd be able to get some shots in. If you went in the ring with a UFC guy you'd just get your head handed to you and be unable to answer back.
