Really, I just want to see if other people would come to the same conclusions as me, to test my people-watching skills!
So DH and I were at the cantine today getting him some lunch (he took the day off). This is a little greasy spoon sort of place, serving poutine, fries, hot dogs, that sort of thing. There's no indoor seating, either - you order at either the walk-up or drive thru window, or call ahead. Then you either get it to go or eat at one of three picnic tables nearby (assuming they're not covered with snow!) Not a full-menu restaurant, let's say.
So this guy is at the window when we get there, standing out there in sock feet. Odd. He orders, then asks if they have ginger ale. No? A Coke then. And can they fill his water bottle? He gets his water, thanks them, and shuffles off to his car in his socks to put the water away. He comes back and asks if they have, of all things, matches. They don't, of course, so he thanks them for the trouble and steps back to wait for his order.
I thought he spoke a little fast, which is sometimes a sign of a French-French (i.e. from France) person. I'm not great at hearing accents in French unless they're really strong, but my husband said he didn't sound French-French.
So, what kind of backstory would you have conjured up for this guy? I came up with a theory pretty quickly and now I want to see if anyone else thinks of the same thing (thus proving I'm not completely in left field when I people watch!) I'll tell you my "answer" a little later on.
