The patients' notable physical and emotional responses to music led the doctors and nurses to request the hiring of musicians by the hospitals. It was soon evident that the hospital musicians needed some prior training before entering the facility and so the demand grew for a college curriculum. The first music therapy degree program in the world, founded at Michigan State University in 1944, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1994. The American Music Therapy Association was founded in 1998 as a union of the National Association for Music Therapy and the American Association for Music therapy.

For a second year in a row, Save the Children has been selected to benefit from Idol Gives Back, a charity fundraising special to air on FOX Network's American Idol program on Wednesday, April 9. Last year, Save the Children's programs in the United States and Africa received $14.5 million as a result of Idol Gives Back. This year's star-studded event will benefit children participating in Save the Children's US programs.

While MusicCares, the Grammy charity, spends only 10% of its money on musicians in need, MAP spends 56%. Grammy head Mike Greene makes $1.3 million a year, MAP director Buddy Arnold makes $98,500. No one at RRC has ever met anyone helped by MusicCares, while we often run into musicians who rave about how they got sober through MAP.
