Vivamus, mea Lesbia, atque amemus
Rumoresque senum severiorum
Omnes unius aestimemus assis.
Soles occidere et redire possunt:
nobis cum semel occidit brevis lux,
nox est perpetua una dormienda.
Da mi basìa mille, deinde centum,
dein mille altera, dein secunda centum
deinde usque altera mille, deinde centum.
Dein, cum milia multa fecerimus,
conturbabimus illa, ne sciamus,
aut nequis malus invidere possit,
cum tantum sciat esse basiorum.

Let us live, my Lesbia, and let us love,
and let us judge all the rumors of the old men
to be worth just one penny!
The suns are able to fall and rise:
When that brief light has fallen for us,
we must sleep a never ending night.
Give me a thousand kisses, then another hundred,
then another thousand, then a second hundred,
then yet another thousand more, then another hundred.
Then, when we have made many thousands,
we will mix them all up so that we don't know,
and so that no one can be jealous of us when he finds out
how many kisses we have shared.

Catullo - poet - Roma - 62 B.C.

Love really doesn't know time.....these words could be easily been written today... this  thread of emotions is what makes History that continuum of connections that never stops and always leads us to the beginning of all.

We are made of the same fabric of History, after all.

Catullo works his magic for me anytme.

When i read him i am always transported to my first high school years.

Like many other extremely romantic girls, i got completely entrapped with his poetry......We were these totally love nuts 14-15 y-old group of nerds. It had been easy for us to fall in love with him when we started to study the Latin literature and the so called "Lyrics" movement.

I remember i got so taken that i started to write Catullo's passionate verses on the love notes i used to hand out to my the boyfriend.

He most likely was completely ignoring them....more important for him was knowing if he would have had the opportunity to fond my bra that day....lol.....aghhww, boys...

What do you read now that has the power to immediately brings you back to your youth, your school age, your  first crushes?

I have a long list of associations but i will tell them along the way....

Hi, Gingi, I knew I shouldn't look into SC at all! Mostly 'cause you're impossible to get past! Mostly it was music with me... but....
Willie: Shall I compare thee to a summers day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate....
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May....
(a good argument for not waiting for the "rough winds", although it didn't        always work!)
Moshe Iban Ezra, Spain ca. 850?  (orig in Hebrew):
                 My soul is astounded!
It trembles and swoons at the sight of the beauty
of the sister of the sun......
Gibran: Drink of the same wine, but from different cups...
Yes, and being so in love with "My funny valentine, sweet comic valentine, you make me smile with my heart....."
Guess I'll always be in love....
Thanks for waking me up!!!  Ciao, Bella

ginger -- For me it was a mix of patriotic and romantic music and poetry.

I particularly loved two poems -- one in Spanish, another in my mother language -- not because they reminded me of teenage crushes, but because they were patriotic poems that lamented about the suffering and oppressed motherland and which inspired a generation of activists.

I can't post them here for my own reasons of ethnic anonymity. I can still recite them by memory, btw...

(psst, Steppen, hi. I'm always forgetting to reply to your latest comment on my Somewhere in Time blog. I'm going there now to post my reply... :-)

Hi, Moon, yes, I just looked at your rem. and yes. Yes, yes. I have more to say there but it will be a few days. I shouldn't be here right now either, but...

Yes, poetry has been omnipresent with me as well. Babi Yar made an impression in the Uni. Moon just reminded me. So much to say here! And its not only memories... it carries on to now. Sorry, but I'll be back on this!

And, yes, Ginger, I have to admit, always lurking in the back of my mind was where and how I could get at least one hand... but a verse or two from a her was always a Big Turn-on for me, and exactly that consideration  she gave me never went lost. (And no I was almost never interested in only "the one thing". But I am honest!)

ah, Kahlil Gibran takes me right back to high school. My boyfriend was studying it and had no clue so i would get really into interpreting and practicing reading it with him...now, it just captures my heart and speaks so truthfully to me!

Ginger, Catullo said it all so well. And it's your knowledge of Latin that gives you such strength in English. Now I know!

And here is one another one, which I am sure comes from medieval Latin. It can also be sung in cannon. Hate to give away my little secrets, but it always had an effect on the heart of someone I wanted to impress....

Pauper sum ego,/ Nihil habeo,/ Cour meum dabo.

(I am poor,I have nothing, I give you my heart.)

Yes, Mamie, and one could almost sit with the Philosopher Poet, on a  western mountian side, looking over the Lebanon, across the fruitful fields and out onto the Titian sea. And feel his wisdom at your side and in your heart.

What if I were lost for a day or two,
In the time it takes to stock on wood,
As happens in a hermit's hut,
For a bonfire night to contemplate
The zen of nothingness.
