We eat out a lot around our house. My wife doesn't like to cook which I mentioned before. So we're pretty well versed on which restaurants are good and which ones suck.

We have an Applebee's not too far from our house, and usually the food is pretty decent. But the service sucks ass. It's really bad. The last time we went there though, it was actually good.

So I figured maybe it'd be worth it to try it again. I had a craving for these spicy shrimp they make, so that's where we went to dinner last night.

It wasn't very crowded, so we were seated right away. But the guy handed all three of us regular menus. Including my 8 year old daughter. So I asked him if we could have a kids menu.

He went off and comes back and he hands ME the kids menu and some crayons. And he says: Here you go sir. Enjoy.

What? Why did he give ME the fucking kids menu and the crayons? Did he think I was in the mood for Mac and Cheese and a word jumble?

My daughter was cracking up and she asked if the guy didn't even see her or something. I'm thinking he didn't.

But then we sat there FOREVER before anyone bothered to come to our table. We saw all the servers standing in a huddle by the bar just gabbing away. I kept looking over there, and they were all laughing and socializing.

Finally some waitress comes over and apologizes for the delay. They were having a team meeting. Firstly, it didn't look like a meeting. It looked like Happy Hour at the bar. And second, why have a team meeting during dinner time when the tables are all filled?

She took our drink order and attempted to walk away. But I stopped her and said we were ready to order food too. She looked surprised. She says: Oh, you already know what you want?

Yeah lady, we do. We'd been sitting there for 20 minutes. How long do you think it takes to make that decision? I already knew what I wanted before we walked in.

She takes our order and we wait some more. A lot more. We'd all finished our sodas by the time the food showed up. So I asked her to bring us more. She walks off and never comes back.

I was eating SPICY shrimp. And my daughter was complaining the whole entire time that she was thirsty. My wife was pissed off and refusing to keep eating until she had her Diet Pepsi.

And the waitress was spotted cleaning tables, chatting to her pals, walking around aimlessly doing nothing. But she never once came close to our table.

I lined up the empty drink glasses on the edge of the table thinking someone would catch a clue. Nope. Then she finally walks past us with someone else's food. I picked up my empty glass to show her. She looked RIGHT at it. I SAW her eyes on it.

Then she served the other table, and went around the long way to avoid our table again. Then she disappeared entirely.

Finally some poor pregnant waitress who looked like she was about to burst any second, comes walking past. I flagged her down and asked her if she could get us drinks. Our waitress appeared to have disappeared into a black hole and never came back.

She walked off, and we waited some more. This was a time period of about 25 minutes from the time we were served our food. We'd already eaten everything at this point. My wife finally caved in and ate her dinner, but she bitched the whole time about it.

(Which was very pleasant to listen to by the way)

It went a little something like:

I told you we shouldn't have come here. This place always sucks. Didn't I tell you this place sucked? We should have gone to Denny's. They have shrimp too. Sure, it's not spicy shrimp, but you could have eaten that. I told you that Applebee's is the worst place ever. Why do you always want to come here? I'm never coming here again.

Etc, etc, etc.

[shoots self in head]

FINALLY the waitress comes over with our drinks. She plunks them down on the table and I asked what happened. We had to eat our entire meal without anything to drink. Did she forget about us?

She apologized and said: Oh I thought someone would get you your drinks.

Someone?? Isn't that HER job? She was our server.

She didn't even offer to give us anything free or discounted or throw a dessert in for my daughter. Nothing. Nada.

So we took it out of her tip. As in, she didn't get one.

And now thanks to her, I can't ever eat there again because my wife is mad at me for wanting to eat there in the first place.

Thanks a lot, Debbie the horrible waitress from Applebee's! Now if I want spicy shrimp, I'll have to get it on the streets!

Damn you.

That would be really funny if it wasn't so horrible. :-p Ugh.

We've had bad experiences with service at Applebee's more often than not, but we still eat there every now and then, because I like the food (we tend to just make the best of a bad experience if it happens that way). And at least I know my spouse won't rip me a new one for picking the "wrong" place! You didn't hire the crappy staff, after all. :-p

One of the positive aspects of dining out with Bill is his ability to make server staffs wait on us properly or pay dearly.  I've seen him order food that's NOT on the menu and get it.

Your server needed to find another line of work.  Service obviously isn't her deal.  If you should be so brave as to return to that restaurant you should ask for the floor manager right when they seat you.  When he/she arrives, you tell them that last time you were here your service sucked SO much that you really are unhappy about returning.  Tell him you really would like to be a customer, but if service isn't up to your satisfaction this time you'll be speaking to corporate.  I can almost guarantee you service will be so good they'll be refilling your cups between sips.

There are only a couple of places we cant eat at anymore, but that's more because Bill made such a scene that we're truly afraid they'll spit in our food.  The other places we enjoy excellent service and leave standard to generous tips.

Mr. B.....Horrible as your experience was, it was still a good read.  I've a few tricks to avoid such moments.  If it's a restaurant that we go to frequently I make it a point pay attention to the wait person who gives us good service.  First I reward the good service with a generous tip and then I always ask to seated in that persons section.  Costly but definately worth the investment.  Another ploy when I suspect the service is going to suck.  I play an amount that I guess would be a reasonable tip on the table.  I point out to the wait person that it's the potential reward for good service and that it will be reduced each time I'm dissatisfied.  Sometimes that works.  If all else fails I have an arrow shaped thingy that looks a bit like a reflector.  When turned on it flashes.  If the need for attention gets really bad I ll turn it on and hold it high in the air.  (Thats what I would have done if your Applebee experience happened to me.)  Usually I get a smile and an apology but one waitress slugged me as she passed our table.
  • botoni said on Jun 14, 2008....
Uni....we were commenting at the same time.  Its quite possible your Bill and this Bill have something in common.  I can make quite a commotion and I'm always remembered wherever we go.
  • Mr_Box said on Jun 14, 2008....
Infernally.....it is slightly amusing now (after the fact) But I don't see why I got blamed for subjecting us to the ordeal just because I wanted spicy shrimp! Next time, I'll bring a six pack of soda with us, and maybe that'll help? :-P

Ms. Ironic.....I think your husband needs to bully the staff of this Applebee's. Obviously my glares and subtle annoyances were not enough to make a difference. I should have made more of a scene. But at that point, I really just wanted to get the hell out of there for my sanity's sake!

Botoni......want to come to Applebee's with us next time? ;-) I think the flashing reflector light would not have helped last night. The waitress looked right at my empty glass and still did nothing! She'd probably just put on some sunglasses if my flashing arrow was in her face.

my oldest daughter got a job at the applebee's near our home for the summer.
she's only been there about 6 weeks (they have a training program that runs 3 weeks).  we've only eaten there twice.  i'm not crazy about their food and when we go to that strip, we prefer longhorn or fridays.

my daughter makes 2.25 an hour.
    her shifts are 9am-4pm OR 4pm-Closing (1am-ish)

personally i wish she'd find a different job.

we eat out once a week or so-  i always take the kids- or some of them nowadays-  i'd say 30% of the time, the service sucks.  i'm a 20% tipper if the service is good, and a 10% tipper if the service sucks.

i'm not sure how else to get the message across - but i always TRY to give the kid the benefit of the doubt.  you have no idea how many deadbeat people visit places like applebees and don't tip or leave 5-10%.  my daughter has come home sunday afternoons after working 7 hours, with $40....add that to the hourly wage and it's barely minimum wage-

yeah, i wish she'd find a new job.
  • Mr_Box said on Jun 14, 2008....
secretlife.....your daughter only makes $2.25 an hour working there?? That's insanity. Around here, they start you out at $8.50 an hour at McDonalds. I don't think they could find anyone to employ around here for that sort of crappy wage. I hope she finds a different job too. But I'm sure she's a much better waitress than the one we had last night.

I've never had real bad service at an applebee's. never had particularly good service either, but nothing as remarkably horrible as what you have described.  I have never been particularly impressed with their food though so I seldom eat there.

I've had servers fired on the spot for bad service a couple times.   I tend to get good service when I go out.  I am infamous in my area for expressing my dissatisfaction when such is called for.   I am also known as a generous tipper when that is called for.

Chain outfits tend to be less concerned however, with one man's complaints.  And they tend to have very short memories.  I try to avoid chain restaurants as much as possible.

Secret.....We've got an average starting salary in restaurants and fast food places of about $15.00 per hour.  Tips are not usually quite as generous in Canada as they are in the USA (zip at fast food).  I'm surprised that your daughter doesnt come home with more in tips.  Maybe folks dont tip as well in places like Applebies/Dennys/etc.

I've had shit service like that before, the last time! I walked out, we'd eaten our entree's and were still waiting 40 minutes for god damn water, so we basically just walked out without paying without waiting for our main meals.

The head waiter tried to stop us and I think I glared death to him before saying "it took 25 minutes to get the drinks waiter to our table, it took another 20 minutes to get menus, it took 40 minutes to get our entree's and frankly I'm too fucking tired to wait for my main meal, we're going to by some water at the shop down the road because you guys obviously don't think its appropriate to serve water.  If you think I'm paying for my experience buddy you're about as stupid as the rest of the staff here"

I off we went and never returned there again.

Actually, Botoni, I've found that people tip in more places in Canada than in the U.S.  Granted I am in Quebec which is a thing unto itself.  But in the U.S., at least in the places I have lived, people don't even THINK of tipping at fast food (McDonald's etc.). It's just not done.  There's not even a place to leave a tip.  It took me forever to get used to leaving tips when my husband and I go out for a burger!

I've always found it to be the opposite - Americans tend to be stingy with their tips or not tip at all (growing up my parents taught me 10%, 15 if it's really good service!), and in general tip for fewer types of service.  Whereas in Canada I find people are a bit more...Continental, I suppose, about their tipping.

Where in Canada are you?  Here most starting salaries, at least in low-end restaurants and fast food that don't require experience, are minimum wage ($8 or whatever that is now).  My husband earns around $15/hr, and he's a skilled computer technician with several years' experience!

the applebees around here is actually pretty good for service....most of the time....sometimes not great....but most of the time....i think that's maybe cause it's a small town and everyone knows each other. i'm not sure
  • botoni said on Jun 14, 2008....

Nytquill - I'm in Calgary.  The wages hear are unbelievable.  It's because there just arent enough people to fill the positions available.  We're in the middle of a major growth spurt.  Every eating place in town has a help wanted sign.  Some of the fast food places are even offering scholarships to teen employees that stay with them more than one year.

I'm surprised that you say tipping is more generous in Canada but being in Quebec could easily make the difference.  Here it is very rare to see any tipping at fast food places.

Fallyn.....You've just pointed out one of the advantages to small town living.   Knowing all the neighbors makes a huge difference in many things.

  • Fallyn said on Jun 14, 2008....
botoni....well...considering most of the customers know the servers parents......if there is bad service the customer will just complain to the parent directly. :P
  • botoni said on Jun 14, 2008....
Fallyn.....When I go to my home town the folks still complain to my 94 year old mother if I get out of line.  It never goes away!
  • evil_twin said on Jun 14, 2008....
Oh yeah, I hate Applebees. The food is alright sometimes, but it's kind of expensive for the quality. And I always get bad service too! And I know it's not just the one you go to, because I don't go to that one. We have one near our house too, and it's just as crappy. Except this one is always packed full of people too.

I think I would have asked for compensation if I were you. I would have at least expected them to comp the drinks that they didn't give you in time! That would have been a gesture at least. The last time I was at crappy Applebees, they gave us free dessert because it took 45 minutes to get some hamburgers.

I'm sorry Melanie blamed you for the restaurant choice. But I did have to laugh about the waiter guy giving you the kids menu and the crayons! That was funny.

I am sorry about your abominable service at the resteraunt. So far my worse was way better that yours... We just ended up with a horrible margaritas and a twig in my friends nacho's. Which the manager tried to explain to us came from their authentic spices- and considering i grew up in new mexico and know how to make the carne asada burrito i ordered myself, i knew it was not from there non authentic cooking. At least they comped the drinks for our entire party and took thirty percent off her dinner...

Hopefully you'll find a better restaurant with spicy shrimp. :)

ps botoni i think you just made up my mind about moving to Canada!

soaring.....I suppose chain restaurants aren't as good with their service, because they just don't care. It's a shame though.

hinana......you aren't missing much by never having eaten there! The food can be good, but the service ruins it.

botoni......$15 an hour for fast food where you live?? Wow. The cost of living in your area must be really high.

Lucy.....I once walked out of a restaurant without paying too. We waited forever for our food, and then after we'd eaten it, no one ever came back to give us our bill! We sat there for 35 minutes and then we just left. No one even noticed.

Nytquill.....I would never think to tip anyone at McDonalds either. What would you be tipping them for? Do they serve you at your table in Quebec?

fallyn.....I'm glad you can get good service at your Applebee's.

Kyle.....I really should have insisted on them taking the drinks off the bill huh? I just didn't want to cause more of a scene after listening to Melanie complain the whole time. I just wanted to leave!

wish.....you had a twig in your food? Sounds like their idea of authentic cooking was to roll the burrito on the ground out back ;-)

Lfb.....Good idea. I should let the manager know I blogged about their horrible service and send him a link. I bet I'd get free stuff then....

    Wired Kitty......you're lucky.

Miss Paranoia......I should report her I guess. She was a terrible waitress!

I enjoyed reading the dinner from hell story, as well as the comments that followed. I have a website devoted to that very topic. In fact, it's called DinnersFromHell.com.

The site allows people the opportunity to submit their dinning horror stories from either the perspective of a diner or a server. Stories are divided into categories (e.g. Couples, Accidents, Illness, etc.). Restaurant names aren't mentioned so as to prevent disgruntled employees and diners from unfairly maligning an establishment. Rather, the site is all about the story itself. Additionally, the website includes dining-related news, advice, forums, and stores, as well as resources to provide a better dining experience including links to websites about tipping and etiquette, dining with kids, and dining reviews.

  • Mr_Box said on Jun 15, 2008....
Gregg.....that's actually a pretty interesting website you've got there. Think my story is worthy of submission?
  • nytquill17 said on Jun 15, 2008....
Boxy - nah, they don't serve you at the table.  I don't really know what the tip is for.  But I don't mind tipping; it's a crummy job and it's nice to be appreciated.  Plus since they're "expected" to get tips, you have to figure their salary is adjusted for that, so I would feel bad totally stiffing them.  Usually I leave 10% or whatever change I get back from my meal.  I add in a little extra if the change back is measly though.

It's just odd because most people here don't think twice about it.  They may not tip or they may tip barely anything but nobody does any double takes or anything over it.  Whereas in the U.S. it's unheard of - I mean, not in the sense that people are rude and almost never do it, but literally UNHEARD of.  People would look at you funny if you suggested it.  It's simply not done.  I don't think U.S. fast food employees even have any way to accept tips.  So Canadians might seem rude for barely tipping, but the fact that we even consider tipping at all in a fast food restaurant is already something!
  • botoni said on Jun 15, 2008....
Mr. Box.....You guessed correctly the cost of living here is astronomical.
  • Wish_Upon_A_Star said on Jun 15, 2008....
I have seen a tip cup at a few fast food restaurants around here but not many.
They apparently thought that twigs belong in nachos and that carne asada should just be some squares of tough beef with no flavor... but they're authentic :)
  • Mr_Box said on Jun 15, 2008....
Nytquill.....I'm pretty sure here in the states, people at McDonalds probably aren't even allowed to accept tips. It's funny how different places are.

botoni......and I thought the cost of living was insane where I lived!
