I remember my dad used to get motion sickness.
He was terrible on boats-
And not much better on rollar coasters or ferris wheels.....
But he would ride with me, because i was a daredevil, and my twin sister was deathly afraid of carnival rides.
So one year --- I was maybe 10 years old, he takes the family to the county fair.
The biggest ride attraction there was this huge ferris wheel, where the enclosed seats moved......
As you were going up, they'd swing back and forth, and as you went over the top and around, they'd spin and you'd be upside down. From the ground, it looked like the cars might just fly off the ride at any moment! And the watchers could hear the rider's screams, which were constant, from start of ride to end.
I had to go on that!
And since I was little, I needed someone to go with me!
It had to be dad. There was nobody else.
We waited on a long long line.
While in it, my dad kept asking me if i was sure i really was up to this ride....
The screamers were making everyone on that line nervous as hell....
But i was stubborn. No way would I admit i was scared to death.....just no way.
We sat on opposite ends of the car as the attendant locked us in.
And not even 1/2 way up, i wanted to be "off" that ride.
I looked over at my dad........he was literally green. silent and green.
i scooched closer to him in the seat, knocking the car off balance and causing us to tilt and spin even more.....
i screamed.
and screamed.
By the time we got to the top and over it, I was praying.
Out loud.
God make this ride be over.....PLEASE!!!
By the 2nd time over the top I was singing Amazing Grace.
I was certain our time on earth was about to end at any moment.
By the looks of dad, he was pretty sure about it too.....
The ride seemed to last an eternity, but finally we were released and deposited squarely on solid ground.
We both took a few steps and decided we had to throw up. Neither of us made it to a bathroom.
We were quite the spectacle.
Afterwards we felt better, and decided to have an ice cream.
Yeah, it was true love alright.
The next year we were back at that same fair.
We skipped that ferris wheel, but we did get on the Spider together, and although i didn't throw up that time, he did!!!
True love. I learned it first from my father.
