Most of you probably don't know, I have been somewhat despairetly looking for another job. You see, I don't actually have a real job. Yes, I go to work every day, and yes, I get a paycheck, but that's all. I am a self employed contractor for a technical employment agency that supplies temporary workers to the IT contractor for our city/county government. What this really means is that I don't get any benefits, I don't get taxes taken out (I have to take care of that myself), I don't even get paid holidays. Those are just days where I lose income.
About a month ago, the contractor company that I have been a temp for (temp HA! I've been there for nearly 18 months!) lost the contract with the city. This week, the project that I was hired to work on finished. What that means is that even though the regular administrators for the network really want to keep me because I do such good project work, the contractor isn't hiring because they won't be there in 6 months, so my last day was going to be the 30th of this month.
So, thank you Monster.com, because I saw a listing for a vb programmer and applied for it. It's actually Visual Basic, C# and SQL programming to support an enterprise level application for Verizon. I'll be a regular employee of the contractor for Verizon, complete with benefits, paid vacations and yes, paid holidays! My god, I haven't even HAD a vacation in 5 years, much less a paid one! and I haven't had a paid holiday in 18 months!
And here's one of the best parts. I start at $4/hr more than I'm making now!
So, the 25th of this month, I'm going to start doing what I love the most, programming on an enterprise level server based application, In a solid, stable company that, unless I really screw up bad will keep me gainfully employed until I can finish my bachelor's degree, and possibly after.
I'm thrilled, I'm excited, and I'm relieved!
YAY ME! :)
