An interesting thing happened in a town not very far from where I live a few weeks ago-

110 teenagers took off after their high school prom and headed to Vermont where the kids had rented 3 homes-
Some arrived via buses that were hired by the parents.

The homes sleep between 18 and 24 persons, and have indoor swimming pools, saunas, tennis courts, and home theaters.  Certainly not like any house I could rent when I was 18, that's for sure.

The police chief from the kid's home town, after receiving "tips" from other students, school officials and parents, notified the Dover, Vt authorities, and
the police in Dover rounded up 110 kids, citing 62 for underage drinking.
They confiscated:  18 kegs of beer, 8 bottles of vodka, 5 cases of beer, and a substantial amount of marijuana.

What I found most interesting was that there was a youtube video on the school website from 2006 which was shot at the party that year.  You see, this party is a kind of town "tradition".

Naturally none of the school officials would comment since there's an investigation ongoing.

I don't know about anybody else, but I sure wouldn't have allowed either of my kids to go to an afterprom party in three rented homes out of state, let alone helped pay for it.  Rental of homes like that costs big bucks.  And I can't see any reputable company renting expensive homes to teenagers.  So, of course parents were involved.

    This boggles my mind.

and try to figure out why the school principal notified the authorities in VT, but then allows the youtube of a past year's party on the SCHOOL website?

    it boggles my mind too.

Daily was telling me about something like this, kids going off and renting huge homes and getting busted like you describe here. Stupid kids, like no one would notice haha.

Ya know what the kids do here? They get kegs of beer and have their parties way in the hell and gone back in the National Forest, yeah. Thing is, the Forest Rangers usually get wind of where these stupid Montana kids are having their party and they get busted too. haha.........Those kid parties, they're hard to pull off.

You know, the thing that disturbs me the most, and many things about this are disturbing, is that the kids believe that they are having grown up fun because they are having alcohol, drugs, and no doubt sex, as part of their prom ritual. Nationwide it seems to be more and more expected and extravagant, with crazy parents, who should know better, footing the bill. I remember when wearing a long dress and dancing with some young man wearing a rented tux, made the high school gym a palace. Sigh.......And if the school posted a utube filmed at one of these parties EVERYONE should be ashamed.

I believe kids should be able to party the way I did. In total FEAR. We might have stole a bottle of liquor from a parent and went out to the country and shared it between 10-15 people. Really hard for anyone to become overly intoxicated. Plus, we had the fear that we would get busted at anytime and grounded for months on end.

I don't even know what to say about parents footing the bill for the kids to have a free for all. It is ridiculous.

Leave to the police to come in and break up a good party. At least once let them go wild. It would be better to have the cops standing by in case things get out of hand. I was never that type of student though. I don't think I even could name 118 students from my graduation year, even though my school year graduated over 700 students from my school.

Hmm... maybe vacantmind has a good point though.

i agree with vacanmind, the parents of these kids should have shown more responsibilty and should have known better

Well, I think part of the reason kids go so crazy like this (and parents allow it) is because all of these things are so taboo. I think by restricting things so much, it just creates an excess on the opposite side. Maybe I'm showing my progressive side her, but I think that if all people were taught to drink (and for that matter smoke) responsibly, it wouldn't be such a big deal, and kids wouldn't be running off to do it in secret, or in excess. I also dislike laws that punish parents if they are home while their kids are drinking at home. Truthfully, I would much rather have my kid drinking (responsibly) at home than running off to some unsupervised house in another state. And lets be honest with ourselves here... Most of them try drinking or smoking, so I'd rather teach them how to do it responsibly, and 21 is certainly too late to do that. (Oh, and don't kid to yourself about sex either... most teens are having sex by 15 or 16, purity ring or not. Give them some condoms and talk to them about sex for real.)

i agree completely with everythingyouthink. as a teenager, i have tons of friends who drink and smoke - but not so much due to peer pressure as adults often claim. more often they simply do it for the thrill of getting past their parents and the authorities. and what seems really strange to me is how often they get away with it. if it seems like more and more kids are getting caught for these things on a bigger scale, just think about how that translates to the numbers of kids who aren't getting caught - they increase as well. we need to be taught responsibility, not abstinence. to say 'no' is the worst way to try to teach teenagers - thats practically asking for rebellion.

(p.s. secretlife - i love your writing! im new here and its great to find one person with so much variety in their posts and all that.)
