Who's reading cakebottom (33):
The assignment: write a four page close reading on the following 12 lines from "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T. S. Eliot:

And the afternoon, the evening, sleeps so peacefully!
Smoothed by long fingers,
Asleep … tired … or it malingers,
Stretched on the floor, here beside you and me.
Should I, after tea and cakes and ices,
Have the strength to force the moment to its crisis?
But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed,
Though I have seen my head [grown slightly bald] brought in upon a platter,
I am no prophet—and here’s no great matter;
I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker,
And I have seen the eternal Footman hold my coat, and snicker,
And in short, I was afraid.

Think you can do it?  I've done nine lines in three pages.  I'm so close to being done!

you know, i think this is pretty cool--although i do urge you to consider expressing the desired length in wordcount, it's easier to calculate given the many fonts, spacings, page size preferences, etc. :>

Hey, that's exactly what I thought when I got the assignment!  Go figure
Mine came out to be about 1500 words (4 pages, times new roman, double spaced, 1 inch margins)

Can't believe it! As I was coming in after a walk with the dog I thought exactly of Ellior and Prufrock!
Four pages.... with Elliot you could... but you're better than me! (You also have more time).
Good luck and thanks for the memory! (I'm sure you'll get an A!)

Haha, thanks stepppenwolf, I still haven't gotten my grade on it, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

Hi Cake! Yes, and now I would love to see the results. Would it be possible to scan it and send it to me in priv. messages.... I would say post it, but then how many people have the niveau for Elliot. (Although here on SC I do know of a few who would get off on it. Some smart people around here.)
Wll be singing the work of Joseph von Eichendorf as set to music by Brahms, Mendelson and Fanny Hunsel in a famous closter early Juily. Dir. told us to read text carefully to obtain more depth and understanding. Looking at a rather bland English translation I was tempted to do at least one myself. But decided to keep it in my head for me alone. For, yes, I too "have seen my head bought in upon a platter..."
Funny how u should present Elliot when literature suddenly became current for me personally. Thanks for the provocative post.

Oh gosh, I'm much too shy.

I'm interested in this upcoming singing project of yours though, I haven't heard of his work being set to music.  Though to be honest, I've only read one or two of his poems in classes, otherwise I wouldn't have a clue.

    Thanks for your comments!

Hi Cake! Eichendorf you have to read in German.!!! I live in Europe, so not too much to impart. You can look up the monestary Babenhausen just North of Tübingen. The retireing king of Württenburg lived his last days there. Once in a while there is a medieval    ----  pls excuse my typos... I'm in a terrible hurry)  festival there. Just the setting! Just a seranade is this, not the ususal orchestra and everything. FHunsel was Mendelsns wife, it took a long time ´for her to get recognized and the world is poorer for it. Still another argument for equality.
DONT BE SHY!!! You will never, ever see me, nor I you. And I am interested in your paper! I won't even comment, if you don't want... OK  Bon courage... as the French would say... Chin up, you're certianly much better than you think you are.... Ciao...  Steppen
