To Want, To Dream

To want what cannot be,
To dream what must not be,
To fear what never was,
How real is what is really me?

To walk in places no one knows
In costumes only I have seen
Hoping a life that is not mine
And yet is only mine.

Spirits of the mind  - are they
Less real than muscle, ache and pain?
To want what cannot be
And yet which must if I be me.

I really hope one day, you find your dream, my friend.  (((hug)))

To determine what you want and need...and being true to yourself is usually one of these...is a good start. From there you dream and then set goals and an action plan to get you where you want to be. The process isn't easy. The question is, is it worth it to you?

I wish you happiness, my friend.

All other thoughts aside for now...that's a great poem.  I assume you wrote it?  Wow......

    And I understand it well.

LJ, i've long felt that generally speaking at least, it is within the nature of being an adult that we do not get all the things we want.

i see clearly that you are struggling with responsbilities and duties, LJ. i'm worried for you, my friend.

    it's a rock in a hard place-
i wish it were easier to have what you want.

Thank you, friends for your attention and thoughts. What you see here is mostly musing about what it means for something to be "the real you." It was prompted by a post at one of my other online haunts and perhaps reflects my own life a bit. But please understand that I'm not struggling against some unfulfilled dream. Or at least I'm not aware that I am - and so it's not struggling, is it?

Mimi, I already have much of what I dream about but I do appreciate your good wishes.

SS, that action plan of which you speak - that's the real sticking point for most people, isn't it? I suppose that on some level our lives are clay in which we are free to work or not work.

Wombat, thank you for the high compliment. I'm really touched.

Jenna, I agree. One should go for the dream if it's even remotely possible.

SW, you're worrying unnecessarily but thank you for your thoughts. Of course, when you talk of not getting what we want as adults, that presumes that we're adults. I'm still not entirely sure what I'm going to be when I grow up.

LJ, i don't think there's a single soul on all SC who would call you anything but adult. :>

LJ....i completely understand what you say....don't we all suffer from less or more heavy symptoms of the Peter Pan Syndrome after all?....

Btw, who wants to be an adult if means losing our enthusiasm and our sense of adventure?

You know, i had to read twice your name.....i thought ....LJ writing poetry?? Really??

But yes, its you and i like what you wrote...this poem is honest and thoughtful...

Ginger, thank you for the compliment. Honest and thoughtful is high praise, especially from someone whose lyricism is so well developed as you.

Interesting comment LJ. After I hit submit, I thought of an addition to my comment but didn't add it. If I had, it would have been that if you aren't going to act, acceptance of the situation is the key to happiness.

Since you say there is no need for concern, I'll just join the others and comment that your poem was well written. But then I already knew you could write well. :)

Thanks, quietone. I'm glad you liked it.

SS, you're so right about acceptance. We can't possibly do all the things that our imaginations conjure up for us and that seem attractive. We can't be all the different people that are inside us. But we can accept that they, even if we never let them out into the daylight, are an important part of who we are.

It is harder to share pain than it is joy. Sometime with the help of friends and family, we endure our pains. But sometimes we have to stand alone. But if you maintain a postive outlook and endure cheerfully, we will find more company along the way....
