Why is McCain getting $58,000 a year in disability income?

John Aravosis (DC) | 6/08/2008 12:07:00 PM ET | americablog.com

First off, I find it fascinating that John McCain, who is refusing to vote for the GI Bill for our troops because "it's too generous,"is himself getting $58,000 a year, tax-free, from the US government for his military service. Had McCain been getting that amount every year since Vietnam, that would total $2,000,000 for the man who isn't into overgenerous government. I just find that interesting.

His staff responded with the classic "he was tortured for his country." Yeah, we get it. The torture card. It's to McCain what 9/11 was to Giuliani's candidacy - the never-ending name-drop. Though what McCain's staff actually said was downright, um, we're being nice to Clinton now, so I won't say Clintonian. Here's the quote:

McCain campaign strategist Mark Salter said Monday night that McCain was technically disabled. "Tortured for his country -- that is how he acquired his disability," Salter said.

Technically? What does that mean? Usually, it means that under the strict reading of the law, you're covered, but in fact it's kind of a nudge-nudge-wink-wink situation - that's what "technically" means. It's called parsing, which is something you do to "technically" claim something is true, when on its face it really isn't. So is McCain "technically" disabled, and taking $58,000 a year tax free from the government, or is he actually disabled? I would imagine there are other solders who are actually disabled who could use the money. And if he is actually disabled, just how disabled is he?

[...]

I mean, the man built his own lake to go fishing at one of his 8 or 9 houses. Yes, he served his country. But something is wrong when we're paying millionaires $58,000 a year, especially when those same millionaires complaine that we were being "overly-generous" to our troops currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the very least, it's terribly hypocritical.

On the one hand, the VA tries to tell every veteran leaving the service that they're disabled and that they should be able to get at least 10% for tinnitus, something that is not easily disproved.

On the other hand, McCain earned his disability and should receive it no matter how well he has or has not done since then.

The $58,000 number seems a little high -- is he retired? What percentage of disability is he claiming? Never mind, found it. 100% disabled pension.

Now, to be fair, it hasn't been $58,000 for the entire thirty-some-odd years since there have been regular cost-of-living allowances in the intervening years.

Veterans already have to fight to receive "concurrent receipt", where they can receive both disability and retirement payments instead of having retirement pay reduced  by the amount of disability payments.

John McCain gets tax-free disability pension | LA Times

Sen. John McCain has long said he is in robust health and is strong enough to hike the Grand Canyon, but he also is receiving what his staff Monday termed a "disability pension" from the Navy.

    [...]

On Monday, McCain's staff identified the retirement benefit as a "disability pension" and said that McCain "was retired as disabled because of his limited body movements due to injuries as a POW."

    [...]

McCain spent 5-1/2 years as a prisoner of war in Hanoi. After he was released in 1973, he returned home on crutches and began a painful physical rehabilitation. He later regained flight status and commanded a Navy squadron before retiring from the service in 1981.

    [...]

If McCain can hike across the Grand Canyon, then why should he be getting disability payments from the government that are tax-exempt, Schriebman asked.

No... the authors of the articles wrote these pieces. I personally have no illusions of what McCain is. He is a piece of shit who divorced his first wife because of problems she developed from a car accident.

The man is a bogus as can be found in politics.

McCain plays media critic — and then forgets what he said | TheCarpetbaggerReport

Newsweek sat down with John McCain on Friday morning, just two-and-a-half days after delivering his widely-panned “lime Jell-O” speech near New Orleans, and asked him about some of his media criticism.

Newsweek: Want to back up a little bit and talk about press coverage. One of the things that you mentioned in your speech in New Orleans was that you felt that the media hadn’t recognized or had overlooked some of the attributes that Hillary Clinton had brought to the race. And I wondered–

McCain: I did not [say that] — that was in prepared remarks, and I did not [say it] — I’m not in the business of commenting on the press and their coverage or not coverage … My supporters and friends can comment all they want about the press coverage, and that’s their right. They’re American citizens. I will not because I believe it’s not a profitable enterprise for me to do so. I can’t change any of the coverage that I know of except to just campaign as hard as I can and try to seek the approval of the majority of my fellow citizens.

It is something that the American people will judge, and I won’t complain about it and I won’t praise it. I will just run my campaign and hope that the American people will make a judgment.

That’s a rather emphatic denial, isn’t it? McCain sounds like he’s actually given this some thought. He knew it was in his prepared remarks, but McCain also insisted that he deliberately omitted that part of his written speech because he wants no part of media criticism right now.

Funny story: McCain did say what Newsweek claimed he said, and McCain apparently didn’t remember his own speech, just a couple of days after delivering it.

It’s right there in the video, less than a minute into the speech: “The media often overlooked how compassionately [Hillary Clinton] spoke to the concerns and dreams of millions of Americans, and she deserves a lot more appreciation than she sometimes received.”

John Cole concluded, “He is either lying, or he does not remember what he said.” My money’s on the latter. It seems unlikely McCain would blatantly lie about a much-scrutinized speech that we all watched. It’s more likely McCain wasn’t paying attention to the words on the teleprompter, was just going through the motions, and quickly forgot what he’d just told a national television audience.

Just working on the "He is a piece of shit" "bogus as can be found in politics" theme.

I'm sorry, he's earned that money. But why he's refusing to be generous with other disabled vets is beyond me.
