Today Kyle and Nat came over to our house to hang out. It was a nice impromptu plan, because I was working on the idea of being spontaneous for a change.

Plus there is a secret about Kyle that I know and that prompted me to invite him over. He makes awesome potato salad. He says he can't cook worth a shit (and this is mostly true) But the potato salad? Well the cooking Force is strong with him when it comes to that.

So I mostly just wanted him to come over and make it, if I bought everything and promised him and Natty dinner.

I'm always wondering what exactly he does to make this masterpiece. So I watched him. I would say I helped, but really all I did was stand there and stare at him while drinking a beer.

Harper wanted to watch too though. Seeing actual food prepared in our kitchen is a rarity since my wife doesn't like to cook. So she's always really excited when someone is actually doing this.

She wouldn't be my daughter if she didn't say something funny though. That's why I'm writing this. Because this cracked me up.

Kyle started chopping onions and she asked him if they made him cry. They were green onions, so they don't really have that effect on your eyes, so he said no.

Then she told him that she never cries when people cut onions either. Kyle said she must be pretty tough then if onions never make her cry. She shrugged and said:

Nah, I just don't care about onions. Why would I cry if I was cutting them?

[dies laughing]

She thinks people cry cutting onions because they're sad about the death of the onion!

Where does she get this stuff? Every day she makes me laugh. But it was even funnier when Kyle (ever the goofball) started pretending to cry over the onions.

He was fake weeping and saying:

Oh no! My beautiful onion! I barely knew you, and now you're gone! What will I do without your oniony love?

He's pretty fucking funny too. Harper was giggling her little head off.

Today felt like it was going to be kind of a crap day for me. No particular reason. It just was. But it ended up being a good one. It's amazing how a little laughter can brighten your day.

That's hilarious that Harper thought that! And I can just picture Kyle cutting up like that. Oniony love...[cracks up again]

I'm glad your day turned out to be a good one after all. :)

fallyn....I love little kids and their humor too. It makes life happy.

hinana.....now every time you're cutting onions, you're going to think of how tragic it is to cut them up, aren't you?

soaring....it is amazing what a little good family time can do for your mood.

Infernally......I'm glad my day turned out good too :-) It was pretty damn funny to see Kyle pretend to be distraught over the onions. He deserves an Oscar!

I can't believe my secret is out! I'm the potato salad master :-P I have no idea why I know how to make that so well, except for that I love eating it. And store bought potato salad sucks ass. It's always gross and the potatoes are crunchy. So if I want it, I have to make it!

Harper is a little crack up isn't she? She was so serious about not caring about onions. It never even occurred to me that she'd think THAT was why people cried cutting them! She's adorable :-) And I'm glad that your day got better too. Was it me and my potato salad that did the trick? Or all the beer you drank while I slaved away in your kitchen? :-P

    yup. my poor onions =(

Sounds like a most enjoyable day to me. Harper comes up with some of the best lines I've ever heard. One of my fantasies is to see Harper and Little Daily together in one room. I'm betting the laughter would be amazing. So now the big question Mr. B. Can you duplicate the Masterpiece Potatoe Salad?
  • tizzygirl said on Jun 09, 2008....
LOL!  I cry at every onions funeral!  It's just a crying shame for any onion to die like that and be dismembered ;)  Harper is just adorable, she's a barrel full of laughs!

LOL  My oniony love...  Kyle, you are one of a kind.

MrBox, you are surrounded by comedians.  Nothing better than cooking together and laughing together.  I'm glad it turned into a good day for you.

I missed this earlier timewise, even tho I saw the title--so glad I stopped back to read this evening!  That is absolutely hillarious----and one I will have to repeat in converstion if it's ok!  Wish I had some of Kyle's sadly murdered onion potato salad......!
  • Mamie said on Jun 09, 2008....
hilarious! I agree with kyle though, store bought tastes like crap! My mom makes the best potato salad but (sniff) I am afraid I missed that gene!
glad it was fun!! best to both your fams!! M

    Miss Paranoia....thanks for reading.

Kyle.....you're right that store bought potato salad sucks. That's why I wanted you to come make it for me! I think it was you, the potato salad and the beer that did the trick :-P

    hinana....don't cry too much ;-)

botoni.....I don't think I can duplicate the potato salad exactly. But I can sure try. Although why try when Kyle can make it for me? :-P

Miss Tizz.....I would cry at an onion's funeral too. It is very sad what we do to them!

Miss Mimi......I am surrounded by comedians. I'm lucky. There's always someone around to make me laugh when I need it.

ocean.....it was a great night. Thanks for reading.

wombat......feel free to repeat this to whoever you'd like. My daughter would be proud if someone else used her one liner!

Mamie.....I didn't get the potato salad gene either. It skipped over me. I'm just lucky I could bribe Kyle into making it ;-)

I have never read anything about your daughter that didn't make me laugh. She is devilishly witty, whether she means to be or not. And I can imagine the scene with her and Kyle. Yeah, he's a ham that Mr. Sexy Pants who lost his oniony lover.
  • wishyouwerehere said on Jun 09, 2008....
Sooooo cute!  Thanks for sharing this adorable story, Mr. Box.
  • Mr_Box said on Jun 09, 2008....
hotaka.....Mr Sexy Pants is a ham, that's for sure. And so is my daughter. It must run in the family!

wish.....thanks for reading. I'm happy you enjoyed it.
  • hotaka said on Jun 10, 2008....
Ham runs in your family? Is that to say you have a family pig? Now that would be hard to chop up without crying over.
  • Mr_Box said on Jun 10, 2008....
hotaka.....funny you should mention a family pig. I was just telling someone the other day about the pig Kyle and I helped raise when we were kids. It wasn't ours, but it was a friends. And sadly, they did chop him up and make pork chops.....
  • destinydiva said on Jun 15, 2008....
sorry about the pig...  you should have  weaved a web saying stupendous pig ...that might have saved him? (well it worked for wilbur in charlottes web) :-)

lol..  your daughter is funny, but with a dad and uncle so hilarious its no surprise :-) glad your day ended as a happy one, its sooo true how a little laughter can make your day :-) xx
  • Mr_Box said on Jun 15, 2008....
destiny......I wish I could have saved that pig. But that's life eh? My daughter is a crack up, but she does have some really good laughter genes doesn't she? ;-)
