Today I saw something on TV that shocked, appalled, confused and angered me to no end!

A 78 year old man in Hartford, CT was crossing the street when he was clipped by one speeding car and then hit head on by the another one right behind (it looked like the two cards were in a race with each other and flew around the corner speeding away from the accident).  While the "hit and run" was horrifying, what caused the above reaction is that this happened at 5:15 pm on a busy street in this city and people were all around - BUT NO ONE STOPPED TO SEE IF THIS GENTLEMAN WAS OKAY!!!!  People drove past him on the other side of the street, a car coming down the same lane that the man lay in stopped, did a U-turn and went the other way.  People on the sidewalk looked intently, but NO ONE went to the middle of the street to see if this guy was okay.  In fact, a guy on a moped/scooter coming the other way turned around and drove around the guy on the ground but didn't stop.  To be slightly fair, 4 people did call 911.

IT TOOK 1:09 minutes (according to street surveilence cameras) till a cop car, who apparently was on the way to another incident stopped.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE THESE DAYS?

What would you have done?  I know if it were me, I KNOW with all my heart, that I would have run to the middle of the street to be with this gentleman, to see if he was okay, to see if he was ALIVE!  I am disgusted by this display!!!

Sorry about the rant but I am so furious by this!!!

BTW - the two hit and run drivers are still out there! ARRRGGGGHHH.. I hope they find them and castrate them.  The should not be allowed to procreate EVER.

FG~ I just saw the video of the hit and run on Fox news. People looked shocked, but no one made a move to go to his aid. Cars weaved around him and kept going. It's not like this was a busy highway and stopping would have been risky...it was just a secondary street...anyone could have stopped in the middle of it without creating a dangerous situation. His poor son was sobbing during an interview, sick at the sight of his 78 year old father being thrown into the air. The man is paralyzed from the neck down, and in critical condition. I hope police can identify the 2 cars involved from the traffic cam video.

Twyl - I just saw it again, and each time I see more apathetic people - like a guy who looks like he is taking a cell phone picture - i could be wrong, but look at the video (you can see it almost anywhere now) and the last guy who stands over him before the cops come  has SOMETHING in his hand and it's just the "stance" of a cell pic.

Hartford is the city in which a car was able to go through an intersection with right-of-way and collide with a car holding the President of the United States (Ford, IIRC).

FG ~ I saw that this morning too. How awful, and now the man is parylized from the neck down.. and just hours ago he was walking!  I sure hope, with the help of that video they catch that person who just never even slowed down.. or blinked an eye.

It's not a new phenomenon: Kitty Genovese.

I think a lot of people don't get involved because they're just not sure what to do or they're afraid of getting sued, though Good Samaritan laws make that somewhat less of a concern.  And, really, we can blog about what we'd do if this happened in front of us, but the reality is that some of us might act like the people in the video and assume that another bystander will help.

I'm sure my husband would jump right in and take charge because he spent 27 years doing it for a living.  I'm not sure what I'd do, though.  I'd like to think that I'd at least call 911.

This kind of stuff happens a lot anymore.  I think that I am more surprised when someone does something nice.

I would have run over there,  and I am pretty sure my kids would have done the samething.  I am with you though, I hope they castrate those guy with dull rusty knives, slowly.

I missed this on the news, and I am appalled just reading about it.  I figure there might be one, or two, people afraid to get involved--but what you described astounds me.  I would stop--even without any medical or first aid training---I could at least grab a blanket from my truck, use my cell phone, and flag down help.

I can tell you for a fact that I would have stopped and helped. Several years ago I was going down the street and saw that there was a one car crash and that the car was totaled. I immediately started to look around and saw a person lying there and not moving. I was the first on the scene and I knew this was going to make me late for work, but compassion has to come first. As a result of the crash a 27 year old man died, my one regret was that I was not there sooner to aid him in some way. I get tired of people not caring and if I get sued as a result of helping, then I get sued. I hope that more people get tired of the nonsense and start to come to each others aid.

I know I would have been right there at the guy's side. I can't refuse helping a person who seems to be in trouble.

Drivers who hit and run are the worst. Obviously the reprecussions of being held responsible can be life-destroying the way law suits go these days. But still I think many of them just flee without guilt because they think they are just saving their own ass. I wouldn't doubt that road racers later talk and laugh about it. The two in your story should have to help that man and his family until the man is well enough to lead a normal life again.
