My MIL sent me an email asking me, among other things, what I might like for my birthday later this month.  Well, my favorite thing of all for my birthday is to be surprised, but her asking me directly sort of rules that one out!

So I'm trying to answer her question.  What do I want for my birthday?

And the answer is, I have no idea.  I'm stumped!  About my own gift list!  How weird is that??

The problem is that while there are a lot of things in the world I would like to buy, most of them are far too specific.  I want to give her gift ideas, not a shopping list!  I could ask for a gift certificate and get the things I want myself, but that's prettly lame.  Not that I mind getting them, but I know when it's my turn to buy someone a gift, a gift card feels like a cop-out.  Even if they're the one asking for it!  I like to put a little thought and meaning into my gifts when I can.  So now it's my turn to say what I want, I don't want to put her in that position.  Especially considering my Christmas list had a fair few gift certificates on it!

I've already got chocolate written down, so there's that.  But what else? *thinkthinkthinkthink*

How bad is this, someone asks me what I want for my birthday and I have no clue what to tell them?!

You want...uh...an all-expenses-paid trip down here to see a certain old friend and her two little people? :-D

I never have a freaking clue what to say when someone asks me what I want for my birthday/Christmas. I'm not going to be any help. Are there any craft supplies you could say you need, but let her pick specifics, or is that all stuff you'd rather hand pick?

I think you want a pair of shiny black boots that come up nearly to your knee with a two inch heel.

    Well, you asked.

lol!  Good memory Exhibit.  However that's not the kind of thing I can really ask from my MIL!  I'd be so picky about the look of it anyway she'd have to take me with her.

    Infernal: I like your idea!

I ended up with "chocolate; blank books, pens, other office-type stuff; scented candles or scented/essential oils" and a note that she didn't have to actually buy anything from my list :p

i usually have the same problem as you, nyt. my family insists i'm hard to shop for, and it's b/c i genuinely can't think of anything i really want--at least, that i want and would be willing to wait for, anyway. :>

For me there is an armful of albums and movies that I want, but it would be basically: "Anything by Great Big Sea, except I already have their self-titled, Play, Up, and Something Beautiful..."  Or "Our Lady Peace, anything except Clumsy, Gravity, and Happiness..."

So, yeah.  I'll stick with chocolate :p

I am not good at giving hints either.   I want lots of things, but I always think they are too expensive so I don't ask for them.

    Chocolate always sounds good.  :-)

    Happy Birthday
