So I got my notice at work today. It hasn't been unexpected, the writing has been on the wall for quite some time despite management's denials.

My last day at work is August 8, and I will be receiving a very nice severance package. Much nicer than many people I'm sure.

But I'm really quite relieved. I don't want to be stuck around until the end doing everyone else's work (which it already feels like) and not be able to rely on getting a package like others of my former coworkers have received. It lets me know that I can actively search for a new job and know about when I can start.  Part of the future is no longer uncertain.

So, this is the second time in my life of being laid off, and so far the future looks much brighter than it did in 1995.

Heh. Although the unsurety of 1995 did lead to much better things...

Wow.  I like your outlook on the situation, however.  A while back you wrote about possibly accepting another job, but  that never came to fruition, right?

What gives you a sunnier outlook this time?

TS, you're fortunate to have this much advance warning as well! i know you've mentioned this as a prospect in the past, and i'm sure it must be a relief for the uncertainty to be at an end.

    Thanks, ed.

kelly, ed pretty much covers it. I get a nice severance package that should tide my family over for a couple of months. If I don't find a job within that time frame, say by November or so, then I might start to worry!

You know Tin there might be something available at the colonial office for an old jar head willing to travel. 600/day.

tin, are you in data processing/IT now?
i read the other day about you wanting to learn C++ i think, and maybe that's where i got the notion-

can i ask where they outsourced your work to?

    good luck TS

sheltercrow -- heh! I'm getting a bit old for that stuff, and family separation really really sucks.

secretlife -- not exactly. My company makes test equipment for semiconductor manufacturers. I actually work in the service department and test and repair the circuit boards that go into the equipment.

About 80% of the manufacturing and service work is being outsourced to places in Asia -- Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand. Most of our market and customers are in that part of the world anyway, so the company will save on both labor costs as well as shipping costs and duties and stuff like that.

So in many ways it makes sense, but in other ways it sucks. I like my job even though I saw opportunities for career advancement disappear some time ago.

Expendable -- thanks! I think I'll do well.

Thanks for the links, Expendable! That first one especially looks good.

Here's one that I heard about a few months ago and signed in for and now I should probably look into using it more: Linked In.

Well, here I am. August 8.

Just waiting for my boss to come and give me my exit interview and my final paycheck.

Then I have two doctor's appointments later today. Don't worry -- nothing serious just routine.

I'll write a new blog later today.

Hey sheltercrow -- a friend of mine did point out a job for me that pays $160,000 a year. Nice, huh? And right up my alley.

I told my friend that that might be enough to pay the alimony, if my wife didn't just out and out kill me first!
