I'd like to clarify something I think is quite important. The adsense terms and conditions clearly state not to incentivise anyone to click your ads. They have to do it of their own free will, and only if they are genuinely interested in what might be on the other side of the link.

I've seen a lot of people talking on here about making 'friendly recripoical clicks' on each others ads. Google isn't going to put up with this for long, as it's blatant misuse of their policy.

Google also has an advanced algorithm, which monitors excessive clickthrough rates and in some cases ROI(return on investment) for it's users(the people who pay to have their ads on adsense).

Sites doing getting more than about 8% click through rate, can be spotted easily and watched to see if anythign fishy is happening...then ban the user.

They can also tell using thir ROI system if anyone is actually going through once clicking an ad, and actually buying anything. If this number(of essentially authentic clickers) is very low, google will simply DEVALUE the clicks coming through from that site.

I think I'm starting to see that happen here. I got over 16 times got more clicks yesterday than any other day, yet earned 6 times less than my best day. That means clicks to my ads yesterday earned me 96 times less than clicks on my best day!!!

That's quite a drop. I suspect it has something to do with the site value factor.

So for this reason, I'd like to say thanks for clicking my ads this far, but from now on, please only click if you really are interested in what the ad has to offer.

Thanks.

It's true, read the T's & C's guys. We're doing more harm than good with the friendly clicking.

Interesting, I was wondering why earnings are never consistent with clicks, guess this is one of the reasons.

Yep, it's all true I'm afraid. Have been using adsense for almost 4 years now on my other sites and have also used adwords - so have been the other side of the fence, ie the one paying to have ads. Have seen these trends go up and down from time to time. Also, the cash you get from a click is calculated upto 3 hours 'after' the click has been made, which gives google time to see if you're getting an unusually high number co clicks. If so, down goes the value again.

Mr.Howto, This is very informative, I appreciate this very much.I don't indulge in reciprocal clicks of any sort and am honest to myself.I also click only if I am genuinely interested, i fact, even though I visit 100's of blogs, I comment only on those blogs I feel really like commenting. Thanks for sharing this information,Please post more on this sort of value for clicks and related adsense stuff. yours truly Heartwalker

Well, thanks for this post mrhowto, it makes clear what is appropriate and what is not here. Before signing-up for AdSense I did read all of that, so I was kind of aware of how bad it could be for us if we just clicked on ads, without being interested in the ad itself. Anyway, this is valuable information for anyone here, so GOOD JOB! :)

I am newbie to SC today. I wonder when you did first join in SC because I read your post about your earnings. I am much curious about AdSense.

I have said all this before in my own blog. I feel in a way that soulcast sets us up to fail by dangling the carrot in the first place. But every day new people sign up for soulcast and usually their first or second post is 'okay everyone click my ads so I can make money." That is just human nature. Eventually someone says 'read the fine print' but by then maybe it is already too late. The sad part is I've had adsense for years, and maybe being here on soulcast has damaged my adsense account. Especially if what you said about 'devalueing clicks' is true. Does being on soulcast do more harm than good where adsense is concerned? Another bug-a-boo on soulcast is sometimes it's hard to not click on your own ads, because with every page looking the same (as in no original templates for each user) it's easy to forget you have left someone else's page and parked on your own page and next thing you know you've accidentally clicked on your own ads. I know I"ve done that at least once by mistake.

Is there any way to repair the damage to your account once it has happened?
  • mrhowto said on Aug 13, 2006....
coollinux - been here just over 3 weeks. purple - it might, but I do have other sites running side by side and I don't think it affects them because they are tracked and handled seperately. sociallight - I think so, simply by allowing it to start sending real clicks through and not so many friendly-clicks. The best answer I think is to spread the word. Then the quality factor of the clicks we all get will go up, because they will all be genuine clicks again.

Let me get this straight, if too many people are clicking ads on Soulcast.com, then all ads on Soulcast.com become less valuable? Based on that idea, if that idea is indeed the case, a website that gets a scant few clicks a day makes more money? Or has the potential to make more money than a site where too many people click the ads?
