The earthquake was 6,3 on Richter. There were only minor casualties and our houses are built strong with earthquakes in mind. So there were maybe not many buildings ruined but some and some people lost all their belonging. All of the homes in the area where the quake originated have lost their household articles. They will get this payed back as far as I know.
Most of the people slept away from their homes last night. Some went to relatives elsewhere. Others slept in a camp made for them or in their own tents, house wagons, summerhouses and so on.
There is a danger of terminated water and the red cross is handling water in bottles to people. All has been very well organized and people are composed and there is no hysteria.
There will be no schooling in the area today. Bet the kids like it.
Here are some pictures that I took on my newspaper web.
PhotobucketThere have been after quakes all night. Not very big. On the scale from 3 to 4,5 Richter. I read that there was a quake almost every minute.
PhotobucketThis farmer lost out houses. His wife went to hospital in Reykjavík because she got hurt. Broke her arm amongst other things. PhotobucketPhotobucketThis is from our alcohol shop. Only the state sells alcohol in special shops, They will be closed in the quake aria today.PhotobucketThis baby was born during the earthquake

PhotobucketSee the dust that came from the mountain during and after the quake. Photobucket An other picture of a damaged road. I think the same one.
PhotobucketPhotobucket He owns a restaurant that had many Weddings booked. They have to be canceled.
PhotobucketThis calf ran away form home. The farmer was surprised when he was brought back.
Photobucket There will be a meeting to day between the citizens and he civil guard about what to do.
Photobucket Some houses were badly damaged.
Here is something from BBC, While this MP was talking his home in Hveragerði was hit badly.

Unfortunately I know all about earthquakes where I live. We've had some really devastating ones. I'm glad that you and your family are alright though.

It is comforting to know that there is no serious casualty in this quake. Nature has been too pierce recently. I'm glad your country is spared from yet another devastation. Stay safe.
  • skald said on May 30, 2008....
Dear Joanna.  SoulCast is sometimes a bit funny. It took me for example a very long time doing this post because everything was stuck when I wanted to update this and do a bit more. Thank you for telling me that  you commented on the other post. First I got frightened that I and not seen you and not responded. That would not have been good.
Infernal.  Thanks. Yes the people there are scared but composed. I am glad to say.
Antithesis.  Thank you, my nation has had luck in disaster for over 200 years but then a lot of people died as a result of a eruption.
The people of the Westman Island all got away when it erupted there. Yes, we are lucky.
  • quietone said on May 30, 2008....
    everyone handled this so well.  They just came together and were ready to help.  That is so awesome.. no panic, just do what needs to be done.. evern the calf found its way home with help!  I am glad no one was seriously hurt.  {{hugs}}
  • skald said on May 30, 2008....
Quiet.  Yes. I thought the story of the calf was so neat. I can understand that animals were frightened. It is a big luck that no one is hurt seriously . (((((((((((hugs to you back )))))))))))))

As always your photo display has touched my heart (even though these were not of your own taking)   Photo journalist do a fine job documenting the devastation in the aftermath of these events.   So often though we don't see or hear the more personal aspects of these events.  This posts brings it home so to speak.

Thanks and once again I'm so glad there was so little personal harm done.  The 'stuff' can be replaced largely.   I do feel for those, always, who lose family momentos and heirlooms, but in the end what really matters is how they can come together and find comfort in each other.

It's hard to lose things, but life is another matter altogether. Thanks for the coverage.

  • skald said on May 30, 2008....
Soaring You are so right. It is how they work them selfs out of things. I once met a man who lost all his in the eruption on Westman Islands. He said that it was hard loosing his belonging but they were dead things and he had learned a lot. He was thankful for his life and everybody's else's
    Thanks Soaring.
Moon Platoon.  That is exactly the thing. Even thought heirlooms can't be compensated they are nothing against lives. Thank you

It sounds terrible Skald but I am so glad you and your family are okay with all this! it could have been worse for a lot of people.

That little cow is cute, weddings can be re organised, houses can be rebuilt / fixed, belongings always stay as memories never lost... mOOn is right, people cannot be, so glad you were safe!
  • skald said on May 30, 2008....
Lucy. You are right too. I know this is enough what I have written already but I might write a post on how lucky people have been tomorrow. Maybe by then every one has had more than enough of me.  My grandchildren were on the computer this evening and it is midnight now . Thanks Lucyl

I read and looked here earlier, then forgot to come back!  I watched the video you just posted there and wow---that was something to see with the building shaking while that man was speaking at the podium!  I was flabbergasted at the damage, especially in that alcohol store! What a smelly mess to have to clean up!
  • hotaka said on May 30, 2008....
Just a little reminder that we live on an active planet. I don't care what Sharon Stone says about earthqueakes possibly being karma. She's an idiot for saying that. At least you guys have stronger buildings and fewer people than China.

So when is your next volcanic eruption scheduled?
  • papajack said on May 30, 2008....

The TV showed how it shook the bldg a bit and parliament adjourned.  It also said that the houses are built in such a way as to withstand earthquakes, because having been built on a volcano etc etc, Iceland is use to it.

I live in "Tornado Alley"......you never told me you lived in "earthquake alley"....hehehe......Hi ya skald!

    love, dee

I don't know which was the most fun, the snowball fight or when the four of us all went out dancing together..  She and her husband are marvelous dancers, but PJ and I did a fairly good job keeping up, and it was the most funnest time, I ever remember having with another couple...

Oh I'm glad it wasn't worse.. and people didn't suffer much loss. I think its commendable that the management efforts are so well organised!
  • kruuyai said on May 31, 2008....
How often do you get earthquakes?  I have to admit, it surprised me to hear about one so big... with Iceland being on the spreading center between two tectonic plates, I would have expected things to be a little more quiet... except for upwelling magma and volcanic eruptions, of course.   I experienced an earthquake while I was living in Mexico...it was a big one, but far away, so I just felt the swaying back and forth while I was in bed.
  • skald said on May 31, 2008....
Wombat very smelly indeed. lol Thanks for commenting.
Hotaka.  Yes, this is a reminder. The scientists say that we may expect an other big one here in the south any time within 30 years. .

I do think the woman is a fool.
    Cry.
No I never told you that. You are right building here are built to withstand earthquakes and the buildings that were ruined were more animal out houses and very old buildings. Still people in the area where the quake was the hardest have too look for crack that might even appear later. Thanks so much  for your comment Dee.
Dia   Yes, Dia the rescue teams are  always  prepared for thing like that and the people  really  stand together here.
Kruu. Kruu this one was due to the plates movements I understand. I really don't know how often. I don't notice it so much if we get a small one now and a gain. This time we have had more than 1000 after shakes in 24 hours.
  • Quna said on May 31, 2008....
Earthquake! You know, I remember the first earthquake in my life. I remember it dimly, I don't rememer the shaking or anything else, but I guess it's normal, I was only two or three years old... Anyway, what I remember is that it was night. My parents ran out of the house, my mom was holding me in her hands. I was too young to understand what was going on, I mean, I knew that there was an earthquake and we left the house because there was a big possibility for it to be smashed. But I wasn't afraid, I even thought that it was very fun to spend the night out. That night people were afraid of going back to their flats, we spent hours in the yard. We returned when it finally turned out that the building was unharmed. But I soooo didn't want to go back:)) Strangely, that's one of my most pleasant memories from my childhood.
  • skald said on Jun 01, 2008....
Quna. This is what the people who live 50 kilometers away from me feel. They could not stay in their houses Just like you experienced and did not understand at that young age. I do think you had a strong and good  mum who could make you feel so comfortable. I remember the picture of you as a little girl with her.

This is not what I have lived and the first one I remember is when I was sitting outside my parents house. We lived in a one family house that my father build, I was sitting on a kind of a hill that had not been taken a way yet. It was a heap of mud or something that was there since the house was build. We moved in when I was 8. It may have been then or maybe I was 9. I don't know. The earth was shaking, It did not last long and I was surprised. Thank yo Quna for telling me and sorry I did not see this until now.
  • Quna said on Jun 01, 2008....
    No problem, skald:)
Yeah, my mother has always been the best in moral support:) I don't remembere fear on her face, she was playing with me while we were outside and I even thought that earthquakes were cool:)
