Mitsuhisa Kobayashi, a former auto factory worker, was the mastermind behind the stealing of eight rental cars using GPS units. Based on the information gathered, Kobayashi would use his two ex-wives to rent the car he was interested in stealing. Once the car was in their possession, they would then proceed to duplicate its keys and install a GPS unit or a mobile phone device with GPS in the car. This allowed Kobayashi to locate the car once it was returned to the car rental company. Once it’s been located, Kobayashi then pulls off the heist. While his method for stealing is an ingenious one, his methods of covering his tracks weren’t. Kobayashi ended up getting caught by authorities in his own house because his ex-wives made the mistake of using their drivers’ license which still bears Kobayashi’s surname since both his wives failed to have their license changed to bear their maiden names. Not only that, their license also had Kobayashi’s address, allowing authorities to nab him. What a major screw-up.
Although he’s been caught, Kobayashi was still successful in stealing a total of eight cars and even managing to sell five of them. And what was his reason for pulling this heist off? Well, according to him, he just wanted to drive his favorite cars. Good luck doing that behind bars.
