We just had an earthquake 6,1 on Richter at 15.45. It origin was not far from us about 50 kilometers or so, near a village named Selfoss.

There are no damages. Only things fell out of shelfs so far as I know.

I was driving home and I did not feel a thing.

Once on our Independence Day we had a very big one. It was called the big south land one and we had been waiting for that one for about 100 years. Some days later we had an other as big in the night. I woke  up then.

There were not much damages in those ones either. But I know we had a crack in our floor. Some houses in the south had very bad cracks then.

In 1896 we were a poor nation and our  houses were not as  good as to day. Then they had the big south land one and it ruined many homes around Selfoss where the quake originated today. Many children were sent to Reykjavík because they had lost their homes.

By the way the weather today is wonderful. The second summer day of the summer.
PS. I just read that they are expecting more quakes and the civil guard is on the watch. All rescue  teams are ready and there is a road closed because  big rocks fell down a mountain and on the road,Big rocks also fell in the Westman Islands . Photobucket

Quiet.  I did not feel a thing. It was in the year 2000 when the big one came and it is the only time that I have thought about running out of the house, It lasted so long in my opinion. Still it was not long they said, 1 and a half minute if I remember rightly. I remmeber an other one why I had birds and they heard it before it started. They starte flopping their wings and they were frightened.
Mimi. Thanks I am alright and I don't think anyone has been seriouly hurt.

Walking.  Thanks I will and don't be afraid for us. I do think some of the people in the south, what we call south, we are just as south but more west, that they might feel badly some of them. They were badly affected in the year 2000.

My husband just came home. He was working in his crane and the crane shook violently. My little friend Daria was fighting with her brother as usually and he jumped. She thought he had course this when everything started to shake even the trees outside, lol And I did not notice a thing.

Hope you bear with me updating in the comments.

A 6.1 is a healthy earthquake!!  We get them often here in California and sometimes they can be very scary.  I'm glad there were no casualties or big damages.

  • skald said on May 29, 2008....
U-I.  It has been said now that it was 6,3. It was a big impact and very shallow and therefore people felt it more. The same people had a bad one and stronger in 2000 but it felt differently they say. I felt that one very well and everyone here felt it but me. How come. i don't know. Yes we are lucky there were only small casualties so far as we know but there has been great damages, I know now. People have lost their life long achievements.  I saw a farm that is completely ruined and the animals had to be killed.

But people are composed and quiet. No panic. Of course we are lucky, you know how it has been for example in China. Thanks a lot.

Wow, Skald, that is quite something!!  I am so glad to hear that you all are fine.  It seems that earthquakes are happening more often nowadays - remember Britain had one last year?  I did not feel our's either - it was early in the morning.  But the ones that have been happening in China recently are just too terrible for words.

Crikey Skald!  Sure am glad you're ok :)  I've been in a quake few weeks back here in Lincolnshire, England on our east coast.  Quite frightening to wake with the bed shaking!

Glad there were so few casualties too.

Hi, thank G-d you and yours are alright. That boulder is scary.

I've been in earthquakes, mostly minor ones and they are frightening. Some of them roar from under the ground. We happen to live on the Syrian African fault line.....

That crack in the road is very frightening also.

May you and yours be safe.

    Alyss.  Thanks so much.
Polar. They said there was no connection between this one and the one in China. I think earthquake is unusual for Britain. They happen often here. Thanks dear Polarbaby (((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))
Pusscat.  Thanks Yes, I heard about your quake. It has happened to me too wake shaking. When we had a real big after quake in 2000 well I don't know if it was frightening but it really shook me ,lol  Sorry my  silly humor.
Trinov.  Thank you so much. I should maybe be frightened but  the only time I was concerned was when I was wondering wheather I should run out or not. It was in the big one On our Independence day 2000. That time Pálmi was in another part of town and he was like me today, probably the only one who did not feel it.

Pusscat.  lol that is so funny. I wonder how my accent is. If you have heard Björk it could be it.  By the way I read it too with some voice attached to it. You know, it is like I hear the voice sometimes but it sure is in my head. Now I am laughing because I sound like a lunatic.

Here is a video I have tired to copy all night but I have not succeeded. You will not understand what is said but watch. There will be an after quake while the woman is interviewed. She is a bit shocked and said she should stay outdoors but she is cleaning up in a restaurant. In the end she said I can't stand it.

Dia.  I read somewhere that there had been about 10 of them and that they are expecting some but only on the scale of 4 to 4,5. A big one will not occur  they think because this one was really a double one both big. One after an other.

The people that were evacuated can return home.

Skald: I've very glad to here that you and your family are all okay.

I can remember experiencing some milder earthquakes when we lived in Alaska. My parents lived through some of the larger ones there the first time my father was stationed there.
  • hotaka said on May 29, 2008....
Those pictures look familiar only from a different country. The wrecked store, things on the floor, those images appear on the news here at least once a year. I know Iceland was formed by volcanoes erupting from the separating Atlantic sea floor. I am surprised it took this long before I heard of an earthquake in Iceland.

That huge boulder that fell down the mountain is really impressive. I'm glad I wasn't camping below when that happened. Sometimes in the mountains I see huge boulders hanging off a cliff and I wonder how it will be when they fall down. Other places have huge boudlers that fell long ago. It must be an awesome but frightening sight to see such a rock come down.

Fortunately I have never had the misfortune of having experienced an earthquake of any magnitude.  For that matter I have never experienced any real natural disaster.  Oh the occational flood here and there, nothing great. The winter blizzards I take quite for granted.

I am certanly glad the you and yours are well and that your nation as a whole didn't suffer loss of life.  The other, property damage, minor injuries and such can be recovered from easily enough.

Dia.  I hope so. Many people slept in tents and in a camp made for them. I will make a update post soon as I don't think that will be better than to put the update here.
Secret,  Thanks so much. The damages were big but no human life is lost and that is good.
Satyr. Thanks so much and I hope you will always have the feet under you. :-)
Phoeby.  Thanks so much and thanks for taking the time to google. :-)
Daily.   How good of you to comment on my post on your vacation. Yes we have active volcanoes and we have geysers and such things. A mud spring opened in the town of Hveragerði yesterday after the quake. It just suddenly came up there. They have a lot of hot springs there.
Ginger.  If I can call it luck, I don't know, those pictures were not from my home. nothing stirred there. They are from homes about 50 kilometers away, where everything went down, in each and every home. It must have been a very strong one that you experienced there back in Italy. I have experienced bad ones but we have never been so near that things have fallen out of shelfs here. Maybe one or two things, but not all. only felt the shaking and when the floor over me was shaking like crazy in the year 2000 on our Independence Day then I stood there, thinking I should go out. I did not because it stopped then. I thought it had been a long time but if I remember right , it was a minute and a half.

Freya felt it and got scared she said. I did not feel this one. I was probably driving but my husband was working  in  a  crane and it shook  violently.
    Thanks  Ginger.
    CW. Thanks so much. :-)
Zayda. Thanks so much. I did not  know you had lived in Alaska. It must be an interesting place.
Hotaka.  Yes , I  know you live in an earthquake country. There has not been a big one like this for 8 years here and they big ones are not all that common here. But there are often smaller ones and I don't bother to mention then, when nothing happens. I am sure you would never have camped beneath that mountain which is or was, I don't know now, full of boulders, in the slopes. There is a little summer house between and under boulders there and I have always been surprised to see it there. Never would I have a summer house there.
    Scipio.
    Thanks so much. :-)
Cuppa. Welcome to my blog and thank you. :-)
Soaring.  you are so right. We were lucky that there were only material things lost. I am glad that you have not experienced any natural  major disaster. Blizzards can be pretty bad.

    Hi, skald!

I heard about this a couple of days ago and thought about you and your family. I'm glad you're okay.

Sorry I took so long to get around to saying so, though! I've been trying to concentrate on other activities but not being entirely successful.

I remember the couple of earthquakes that I felt when I lived in California. One woke me up at about 5:30am or so, I thought there was a train going by. Then as I woke up more I realized there were no train tracks nearby!

That was one of the big ones, I think it was the Northridge quake in '94. (Apparently it was 4:30am).
  • skald said on Jun 01, 2008....
Tin. Thanks so much. I have read what the link, I was so sorry to see that there were so many lives lost. I may possibly have seen , I am sure I saw something about this on the TV at the time. I don't know if it was in that one or some other one in California where I saw cars just drive off a bridge that fell down. It was horrible.

We were lucky and we have been lucky. As someone said we are so few. What is happening in China now is really serous.

By the way I have been waken up more than one time by a shake but I  never thought there was a train going by. Maybe it was not so bad and we don't have any either. lol
