Well so it is that the old fool has yet to go to bed. Too late now so I may as well post this little note and get ready to start the day's activities.
Nate has yet to awaken, or at least I presume that he hasn't as I haven't heard him rambling about. I'll have to get him up as soon as I finish tthis so he can get ready too.
The family will gather at the Old House at nine for a quiet ceremony at the family plot on the grounds. My uncle, who I never met lies there (he died in WWII) as does my brother (he died in Viet Nam) as do a few other relatives who served at various times during the twentieth century.
Of course my mother, sister, Edna and my grandparents also call that small plot home today. We have been holding this ceremony since I was a teen living with my grandfather, and long before that I'm sure.
After that the three oldest grand ones have to get to the school to get ready for the parade the band will be marching in at noon. From there it is off the veterans field in a local cemetary where the band will play the anthems for each branch of the service in addition to the national anthem and the local veterans lodges will lay wreaths.
Then its back to the house for a light lunch with the family. Burgers and hotdogs will be the fare, nothing special.
Next its off to the park for the annual Raven Family v Larson Family Memorial Day Baseball Classic. We've been doing this for about fifteen years now and it has become quite an enjoyable tradition. Few of us can play worth a damn, but its fun anyway.
After that the two clans will gather at my place again for the evening. We alternate and historically when its been my turn we would go to the Old House, but this year I opted to do it here. We'll see how it goes.
Festivities will wrap up by about ten or so and then I will be able to crash.
