This does not inspire confidence.

I had to have blood drawn today.  I'd never been to this branch of the lab company my insurance company insists we use.  Likely I won't be going back.  I don't care how convenient it is.

I was shown into one of those little cubicles of torture, torniquet-ed up and told to make a fist.  So I'm white-knuckling it, with my circulation cut off below the elbow, and the phlebotomist (meaning, the incompetent twit handling the really sharp stuff) finds what she thinks is a likely vein and puts the needle in.  Hmmm.  Nothing.  She thinks for a minute and then calls out to the reception area, "Um, hey Bobbi, can you come and help me?"

[blink] Help you?  You need help?  Bobbi comes in the room, and proceeds to coach Needle-girl.  "Okay, now, move the needle a little to the left.  Not too far.  Nice and slow..."  She moves the needle and whatever she hit sent a shooting pain down to my wrist.  I flinched, and she immediately removed the needle and left the room.  So, Bobbi the Coach trussed up my other arm and drew three tubes of blood.  No problem.

Only thing is, while I'm waiting for the elevator I notice that a good sized purplish lump is forming right at the needle mark.  I'm not a wimp, but I'm not real crazy about purplish lumps forming on my person.  So back I go to the lab.  The Coach looked at it and said, "Oh.  Didn't I put a pressure bandage on that?"  Um let me think...  NO YOU DIDN'T!   Why am I not surprised?

I feel like I barely escaped with my life!  Well, no, not really, but still...  I have no problem with needles, and I understand that sometimes things happen.  But I sure don't want to be anybody's practice victim.

Mimi, when my grandma passed away, her forearms were black from all the bruising caused by seemingly experienced phlebotomists, lab techs, and Home Health nurses who couldn't get blood from her.

Ms. CL (formerly of book group fame) used to be a phlebotomist, and she has trackmarks/scars from letting blood-drawing n00bs use her as a guinea pig.  I don't hate needles, but I don't think I could let myself be a pincushion.

She actually volunteered to be a practice dummy?  No wonder she's a little skewed!  (if she's the one I'm thinking of)

I now have matching bruises on both inner elbows.

Apparently it's pretty common for the phlebotomists (at least at the facility where Ms. CL worked) to allow their more inexperienced counterparts to practice on them.  She has pits on the inside of her elbows that look like smallpox vaccination scars!

well evern a blind needle lady could find my vein in my arm.. it is what the love to see... "a big ole garden hose".  I could even get this one!  Well, maybe by the time you have to go back for test.. this new one will know how to draw blood!

Mimi, I have horror stories about blood tests...

I was asked to donate for a research project some years back & the person who came to draw blood just couldn't find the vein. After the fourth attempt with me gritting my teeth trying not to scream I told her enough was enough and that if they really wanted my blood they could send the bloddy phleb!

And... I have to go for blood tests next week. Oh joy.

Oh I feel for you!  They called me "No Vein ........." last time they tried to get blood from my inner elbow.  It hurt so bad, and then they had to finally switch arms.  I had bruises on both sides.  People asked me what the heck I had been through!  I hate needles and avoid them if I can.  I can't give blood because I was in England during the "mad-cow" scare.  I was told I could never donate blood.  I know people need it, and I feel bad about that, but I am still kinda glad I don't have to face the needle.  (BTW, I don't have mad cow disease---I don't think!)

The phlebotomists that know what they're doing must have cost too much and this lab your job insists on using must be the lowest bidder.  Double whammy.

    Glad you survived.

    WTF?

oh Mimi trust me I understand!

I have one good vein on my right arm. I ALWAYS tell the person taking blood to use this vein. Some get a bit offended thinking I'm telling them how to do their job but most appreciate the guidance. I once had to have surgery on my right shoulder so the anesthetist couldn't use my 'good' vein so tried to put the needle into my left hand. She tried many times...so many that she was apologizing. Finally, feeling bad, she used my good vein to put me out then continued to try and get a needle into my left hand after!

    Isn't life grand?!

Oh my goodness MissM!  Wow.  You know, when I was pregnant with Scooter Bug ( and  a couple of months following), I had some interesting moments with one uhmmm...particular "blood-sucker".  ;-)  Same girl - 3 separate incidents. ......

First incident was the first time I met her at my OBs office.  She was supposed to draw blood but didn't know which color tube to use.  She finally figured it out and drew blood from my arm.  A day later and I had a red streak the color of a magic marker that stretched from my wrist - up through the needle mark and on clear up to under my armpit.  I even had an lymph node swell up to a gi-normous size from it.  I had to take a round of antibiotics.  Fun.

Second incident - a month later she broke a needle off in my arm while drawing blood.  I mean literally the only thing sticking out of my poor arm was the metal.   It wouldn't have been so bad but she completely freaked out.  I mean FREAKED.  I sat calmly saying "Listen - I'm okay but you HAVE to get this needle out of my arm".  I had to repeat it several times before she could pull herself together.

Third incident - fast forward another couple of months ---- I needed some bloodwork and the doctor had me wait outside this little room so the same girl could have another go-round on me.  (I guess I hadn't suffered enough)  The door was closed and I was instructed by the doctor to wait and this girl would be out in a minute to take the blood.  After 15 minutes the doctor passed back by and asked why I hadn't had blood drawn yet.  I said she had not come out so he opened the door and as it turns out, she was in there changing clothes and cleaning up because she broke a tube of blood on her and everything else.  Shortly after that, I didn't see her in that office any longer.

Good thing I'm not scared of needles either.  ;-)

mimi, my sister is always getting stuck, and they have such a hard time finding a vein to use that she almost always gets a huge purple area-  sometimes, like the last hospitalization, her entire upper arm was purple.

alot has to do with the person drawing the blood.  i know for a fact that alot of them just aren't so good at what they do if you don't have an obvious vein-

i'd have been passed out on the floor.  i can't stand needles and the sight of blood makes me sick...

Ugggh, Mimi.  I had a friend who did that training and she practiced on oranges.   I didn't think that sounded too spiffy.  I had one nut job who swore I had no veins, but the rest have been pretty good.  Sorry you had to go through that.
