Human trafficking is the trade of human beings and their use by criminals to make money.
That usually means forcing or tricking people into prostitution, begging, or manual labour.
First I would like you to take a look at some facts on human tarfficking:
- Between 2 and 4 million people are trafficked worldwide every year – United Nations estimate. As many as 200,000 people are trafficked in Europe every year, the majority are women and girls who are forced into prostitution.
- Human trafficking is so common now that it’s the third most profitable criminal activity in the world after illegal drugs and arms trafficking.
- 80% of victims trafficked across international borders are female and 70% of those women and girls are trafficked for sexual exploitation – US State Department.
- It is estimated that between $7-13 billion a year is made from trafficking.
Most of the victims of trafficking are women and children from developing countries, people who lack money or opportunities for work or study, young people who wish to improve their lives.
The victims are deceive through the opportunity to work in fields like: domestic work, hospitality industry, modelling, entertainment, etc.
Why should you care? Becouse it could happen to you, or someone you know. Anyone who is thinking of travelling, working or studying or abroad could become a victim.
