I am sure some of you...like Bloc have heard or maybe know first hand about how bad the situation of rape had gotton in Iraq. Our own soldiers raping women soldiers. Did you know? I didn't until my neighbors and I were having a conversation.
I guess it was so bad the Military had to put auto locks on the female quarters and have men guard them with weapons locked and loaded with orders to fire to kill if any man was caught entering.
A young women in our town had a funeral recently. A service women who the newspapers said had died in Iraq. Apparently she killed herself after being raped by one of our own.
I am very sad and heart broken. This really did shock me.
Any thoughts?

sad. We didn't have any problems with this that I knew of while we were in bosnia. I knew of a couple incidents on base in germany, but I think the harshness of Iraq makes people do things they wouldn't normally do. sad :(

bloc: I agree. I don't know how much suffering, hatred and anger you can see before you start living it yourself. (Not that I'm defending it!!)

You can stop it, if you make your President see. He is a bigot, and he is sending all your good young men n women out there, and they come back in body bags, or traumatized, or demonized. War should be worth dying for, not fought to support a stupid man's vanity.

The conditions in Iraq are no where near as bad as people make them out to be. Hell if we are going to speak purely statically (which is heartless and stupid, but I have to bring it up when I see ignorant statements) your sons and daughters are safer in Iraq than they are in the U.S.

I haven't heard anything about raping being any more out of control than is "normal" (I hesitate to say anything is normal or acceptable about rape. I merely mean to express that it already happens) Was the source you heard this from reliable? Considering how much our press seems to enjoy putting down our military I can't see how this problem could be this big without us hearing about it on the News.
  • SOLDIERCIPSWIFE said on Aug 31, 2006....
My source was the soldiers that have been there. I live on base and it came straight from them...so I would say that my source is THE SOURCE.
I dont think having men guard womens quarters so they wont get raped is normal.
This is not an ignorant statement...This is happening. Along with a lot of other things our government will never tell.
I think that you are a little naive to think that the government is unable to hide such things. Do you think there are news cameras and reporters hanging out near women's quarters?
There are a lot of things you will never hear about in the news that is happening. The only reason I know is because I live with the Soldiers who have been there and back again.
    God bless you all

"Your sons and daughters are safer in Iraq than they are in the U.S."

That is completely false. The percentage of soldiers that die out of the soldiers in Iraq is far far higher than the numbers of americans that die (of unnatural causes) out of the total us population.
  • bloc said on Aug 31, 2006....
how does the press put down our military? As a veteran I've never felth this way about the press.
  • SeanRenaud said on Aug 31, 2006....
Oh come off it bloc, http://www.kcom.edu/faculty/chamberlain/Website/TOPTEN99.HTM

More people were killed in accidents and murders in 99, than have died TOTAL in this war.

As for Soldier's wife my source is myself having spent 9 months over there, I have friends over there now. If there was evidence to support your claim why hasin't your husband/son came out about it?

I know the government can hide a lot of things. I don't think this is one of them. Too many people to keep quiet, like me for instance.

I didn't say that it is normal for soldiers to need to gaurd female barracks, I'm saying I never heard of it from anybody else. I never saw it in my 9 months in theatre.
  • bloc said on Aug 31, 2006....
There are a ton more people in american than soldiers in Iraq. Let's say there are 100 soldiers in iraq and 3 die (3% die), there are 100000 americans and 300 die (0.3% die). It's more dangerous being a soldier in this case than an american in america yet more people have died in america.

But that isn't the only way that your argument is wrong. Your counting normal deaths in america, but not in Iraq which isn't an accurate comparison. Shame on you :)
Add up all the people that die in Iraq of diseases, accidents, and everything else in that link you gave. Then add to that the people that died in the WAR!!!!!!!!

No matter how you slice it your far more likely to die as a soldier in Iraq than as an average american citizen in america.

Another thing your not counting is the fact that our military is very good these days at saving very badly injured soldiers. There are many many thousands of soldiers that are missing limbs or eyes because of iraq. Add them to our counts and again it's far less safe as a soldier in iraq than in america in general.

But this should really be common sense. How many people in american have died from bombs in the past month while at the supermarket? How about Iraq? All the stuff in your link (heart attacks, car accidents) will be relatively the same percentage wise as in Iraq.

    http://news.yahoo.com/fc/World/Iraq

"A series of explosions devastated homes in Baghdad just before nightfall on Thursday, killing 50 people and wounding five times as many, some of them in an apartment block that collapsed"

lol, yeah, it's much safer :/

Why do Americans lie to themselves about the war? You mean CNN is taking footages of Iraq, from the moon?
  • SeanRenaud said on Aug 31, 2006....
No I mean I was over there for 9 months, I was in the Marines for 4 years and know one injured Marine, and one dead Marine. We HEAR about every single death that happens. I know for a fact that at least in the Marine Corps have more drunk driving incidents than we have in theatre problems. I can't really speak for the other services.
  • SOLDIERCIPSWIFE said on Sep 01, 2006....
sean-no disprespect. Perhaps you were not on a base where the rapes where taking place. These men do not have any reason to lie to me. There is nothing for them to gain.
This war is something we have to deal with until another president is elected.
Also we may HEAR about every death...but we don't hear why. Its the military and the US Government is not going to tell us what really happened. Especially if its a suicide from a woman soldier who killed herself because she could not handle life in IRaq after being raped there by a fellow male soldier. THATS REALITY...THAT'S WHAT IS HAPPENING. HER DEATH WAS REPORTED ONLY AS DYING WHILE IN SERVICE IN IRAQ.........YES WE WILL NEVER HEAR ALL THE TRUTH!!!!!
  • SeanRenaud said on Sep 01, 2006....
I don't claim that we hear all of the truth. I'm not even claiming that the incidents you are presenting are imaginary. I am saying that I believe they are isolated. With any luck this war will continue until we've won, not until we get another president. Even if our reasons for this war were wrong, losing it will be very dangerous. You think the terrorists are going to stop destroying Europe, England in particular if they have proven they can defeat the world's only super power?

The military does have a high number of suicdes, maybe some of those are caused by women who didn't have the strength to go on after a rape. Maybe they were cuased by guys who couldn't live with the attrocities they had committed.

Every place men and women cohabitate there is a certain amount of rape. I'm not saying that is ok, acceptable or in anyway condoning it. I'm saying I'd be curious to see if there is any proof that it is happening MORE by soldiers in Iraq than in any other comparable group. I'm tired of watching the troops get raked over the coals. Why don't we hear more about how RPGs were fired from Mosques and Marines stood and received fire, took casualities while waiting for the for somebody far enough up the chain authorized them to break the GC and fire on a religius building. Why do so many people on the left hate the war to the point where they want to demonize or let die, the men and women who swore to protect you?
  • Susmaryosep said on Sep 01, 2006....
    Soldiercipswife,
Yes a lot of 'shit' is hidden, and in a war, thw worst comes up in the Army. Throughout history, the women are those who suffer the most in the front lines be it the conqueror, or the vanquished. Have you read about what the japanese soldiers did to the women in Korea, China?. Put a uniform on a man, let him go to the battle front, and he becomes a beast. That's the tragedy of war, besides its other destructive effects. those things happen, and if anyone in this post denies it, he can't be human!

"You think the terrorists are going to stop destroying Europe, England in particular if they have proven they can defeat the world's only super power? "

Sean, this is the problem Iraq and terrorism are not really related. The terrorists recently arrested in England were born in england. The majority of 9/11 terrorists were saudi. Iraq had nothing to do with this stuff. Your right in that the terrorists will claim to have defeated us in Iraq if we pull out now, but they will also claim to have defeated us if we pull out 10 years from now. Iraq is one of the greatest blunders in american strategic history. Let's not forget the way the USSR failed. It essentially went bankrupt. Should we stay in Iraq another 10-15 years if it costs $100,000,000,000 per year?
  • Susmaryosep said on Sep 04, 2006....
    bloc,
You are right! USA has forgotten Vietnam, and Russia's Afghanistan. When you cannot differentiate the 'innocent' citizens from the 'terrorists' you are in deep shit. Bush, besides being blind n deaf to all this, is also 'brain dead'. How many more good young americans got to be killed for his obstinacy........ My god!
  • D6fer said on Jan 27, 2007....
Isn't this why most conservatives never wanted Women in combat? Weren't these issues addressed prior to Women serving? The answer is yes. Obviously, anyone who rapes should be put away forever! But why do we create these types of situations for ourselves? Kind of like smoking in the powder keg! Another product of you so called "progressives"
  • TinSoldier said on Apr 21, 2007....
SCW, I'm sorry to raise an old (and maybe painful) post, but I have to echo Sean's observations. After a year in Kuwait and Iraq I heard of relatively few rapes and the ones that I did hear about were mentioned loudly and widely. If there were others then they weren't reported to higher commands as they should have been.

In fact, I heard less sexual shenanigans in this war than I heard about in the first Gulf War.

I'm not trying to minimize the ones that do happen, but as you may know most military men are probably very similar to your husband and (even though I don't know him) would not countenance such things if they knew about them.
