On November 9th 2000 my 18 year old daughter, a freshmen in College was heading out of town on the freeway with her college soccer team. They were going to play their main rival on the other side of our state. Big game..trying to get into the National Finals. They were traveling in 3 SUVS along Interstate 70, just 30 minutes outside of our city. At around 12:00 I got a crying phone call from my daughter Val. She seldom cried so it was somewhat immediately alarming. She then said "Dad, I am at a rest stop" "there was an accident" "My coach is dead" "I think some of the other girls are dead too". The lead SUV was driving in the left hand lane heading east. An 18 wheeler inadvertently swerved to the left as the SUV was going around it. The SUV being driven by the Soccer Coach and carrying all of the soccer equipment, and 3 of the players swerved left to avoid the truck...it hit a patch of ice...spun...and flipped over ending up across the freeway in the westbound lanes where it ended up on its top. Seconds later it was struck by another truch heading westbound. The coach and 2 of the 3 passengers were killed instantly. My daughter was in the 2nd of the 3 Suvs which was being driven by the coaches....wife of 1 week. The truck that initiated the accident never stopped...I can tell you several things from this event in my life....I feel sadness to this day over the parents whose daughters weren't able to call home, as mine did that day.....I marvel at the spirit of the surviving girls....they went back and played the game the next week...in honor of their teamates and coach....I know virtually all of the girls have battled numerous issues relating to that day......my daughter has been no exception....she is now doing very well as are most of the girls from that team. I was changed forever as well. You see there were girls from many countries on that team. The U.S., Canada , England, Africa, Hungary, Mexico and several others. But I can tell you this for certain....on that day they ALL cried. Later on they All struggled. Within 3-4 years they had all gone their seperate ways. I know they took a little of each other with them, as they scattered back out across the world. They were a team....I'll bet to the girl they would tell you that they still are. I always wondered how the lone truck driver whose act although certainly accidental.......I've always wondered if he understood his impact on The World. And couldn't he have just cared enough to stop for a minute?
