In a story I was just reading at Yahoo News, the tragedy of Myanmar continues to grow, and the need to do something to assist these people is imperative. I do not understand why we continue to "negotiate" with this regime, that obviously does not care for its' own citizens. We have done the good and proper diplomatic things, now we need to do the essential "save" the citizens of Myanmar, and to hell with the military junta.

There is absolutely no need to "overthrow" these idiots! Let us work with the British on their "plan" to force aid on Myanmar, by way of a massive air drop. This would assist many, and would have little if any impact on "destroying" or in any other way of taking control of this nation. It might also clear the way for further aid, as the junta "sees" that we are not there to "change" their government, but just trying to help!! We MUST act before the death toll doubles, or triples again; what with more rain, disease, starvation, this is a very real possibility, and We have the ability to stop it~~NOW!!

The story begins:

Torrential rain lashed victims of Cyclone Nargis on Friday as Myanmar's junta admitted more than 130,000 people were dead or missing, putting the disaster on a par with a 1991 cyclone that killed 143,000 in neighboring Bangladesh.

In a shock update to a death toll that had consistently lagged behind international aid agency estimates, state television in the army-ruled former Burma said 77,738 people were dead and another 55,917 missing.

The May 2 storm has left another 2.5 million people clinging to survival in the delta, where thousands of destitute victims are lining roadsides, begging for help in the absence of large-scale government or foreign relief operations.

Interesting, yes help would be good but if you take a look at the whole place the governments probably hoping the death toll will rise, it can't afford to feed its people for goodness sakes.

massive air drops, sure, but isn't it the hospital care they need more?

The army would just collect it up and or steal it back from the people.  It sucks but the only option here is to save our money and let these people die.  We could overthrow their goverment but really we've got our hands full right now and no other country is going to do it.

So do the same thing you for Darfur.  Change the fucking channel

It sucks it really does.  And this is a country we should have forcibly removed the leadership from years ago.  It's really frightening how many people can say well America this America that, even now MOST of us don't live in fear of our government.  You wanna bring up Abu Gharib, I'm not saying we shouldn't be working to end that, but what I'm saying is that is still an isolated situation that isn't living in fear of the government.  I'm not worried that Bush is going to kidnap me and my loved ones and rape and murder them.  As bad as gang violence is, even in the worst neighborhoods of this country  there is little reason to  fear that say the Crips are going to drive through Compton and burn all the houses down.  Our way is provably better (The West in general) than these other nations.

    Lucytorial and SeanRenaud,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I think we need to start with the most remote areas, where even the military has not been able to reach and drop aid there. I know there will probably be some loss of goods, but right now these "dying" people are receiving nothing.

This is definitely an instance when a coup would be acceptable if need be, but it doesn't look like anyone is going to do that, so we need to do what we can, until the myanmarians get fed up and overthrow these bastards.

    Take Care!!

The thing is that if we do anything we'll be seen as inciting propaganda.  Besides how much do money do we give to people who hate us?  I'm sorry I know it's crass but I wouldn't expect any help from Russia if we'd had a national disaster.

At some point you just have to let them die, and we can't stage a coup we're over stretched as it.

    SeanRenaud,

You are right, but I was thinking maybe if we did something for purely humanitarian reasons, we might start changing the perception of many that we are just warmongers.  I am usually a realist, but I know some very nice people from myanmar that work in the mall, and I can see their sorrow and pain as many of their families are in that region, and they have not heard anything from them since the cyclone, and that made it more "personal" I guess.

    Thanks again for your input!!

We do things for purly humanitarian reasons.  We are the biggest contributer to the world food banks.  We give more money in donations than any other country.  We have some fo the most lax immigration laws of the entire world.  We sent our military in to give aid after the tsunami in 04. (or was that 03?)

We do these things all the time as it is.  Just nobody cares.  This government doesn't want our help.  So if we help them we are ignoring the will of the people.

Which also leads me to at what point/how many people have to agree with us for us to act to be considered justified?   I mean there were Vietnamese who wanted our help (and were slaughtered when we finally pulled out).  Do we side with the government or the people and how many people need to want us for it to be considered us helping people gain their freedom?  Wha tabout Tibet?  The Chinese government certainly doesn't want us helping to free Tibet, the Chinesse population is much larger than that of tibet so I' feel safe assuming that if the will of the people is measured in bodies that the people don't want our help either.  So like I said how many?

It sucks, it really does.  People should be people.  We should have no borders and we shouldn't have wars.  But siad perfect world is a long, long way off.  In the mean time we still haven't repaired New Orleans.  We have ghettos and other suburban areas that could benefit from us pouring our "spare" money in to it rather than a country that hates us.

Tomorrow is the "big" day, when half of the country will be elated, and the other half devastated, as the election finally arrives and our 44th President is chosen by "We" the people. Before that there is still time for many things to occur....
