NASA says they are turning urine into drinking water and or gatorade.. depending on "taste"... what taste?? ewww...

I know I probably am drinking the same sort of thing and worse right here in the city water that flows every so clearly out of my kitchen faucet.  The thing is, I don't have to see the person who is actually "making my water".

Would you be able to drink this?

Yuck. No, I don't think I'd want to drink pee Gatorade. That's just wrong. And in the article it said that they had a donation tank of pee that they experimented with. Yuck again! I wonder how that even works? Then again, I don't want to know.

We have been recycling human waste in the cities for awhile. You see, they just filter it with all kinds of chemicals and resell it back to you.  This is not funny. I buy distill water. The water here is very hard, lots of lime. Good on the kidney, huh.

Well, hope you have a great day! I've got 30 mins left to visit and off to work i go. So, take care. ~see ya

    e. t.  ~ I know what is in our water now is probably just as bad or even the same.. but the thing is...... I don't have to witness it.  Kind of out of sight out of mind thing I guess.

MeMy ~ hi again...  I hope you have a wonderful day at work!! Happy weekend!! I do know that they "clean the recycled water" with all kinds of wonderful things!

This is also like not wanting to see the actual cows and chickens I eat.  As long as I don't know how it's done and can't taste a difference and it's been tested and regulated to death I'd most likely be okay with it.  It's not my first choice if I had one to make, but if it was this or nothing, I'd do it.

Uniquely ~ I agree.  If I don't know the details, then.. I think i'd be okay.

I drink distilled water too.  I couldn't knowingly drink recycled urine.  I wouldn't have it swallowed before I would be gagging.  Yuck to the max.

Polardoodle ~ we probably drink worse than that and don't even know it.  That "water" in space is probably cleaner than what comes out of my tap.

CW ~  I would love to have my own artesian well again.  We have a lot of spring fed wells around here.. the water is so cold and so good.  :)

    No way!
I have a hard time grasping that someone would actually pee on someone if they're stung by a jelly fish!
    Drink pee?!?!?!?!
    EEEWWWWWWWWWW!
    Gross!

Everytime I think I've heard it all....  I would have to be pretty desperate to drink it, but then, maybe someday I might be.  I didn't understand the part about using grey water and exhaled breath to make water in space.  Weird!

Mr W. used to (for a short while) work as a water treatment ---what?  Specialist?  Hardly, but he was responsible for handling the waste in a plant.  He tested the tap water they used to make coffee against the water he had "treated" and guess which was cleaner by far?  The treated water, of course!

When you think about it, it isn't all that new.  The army has for years had their portable water filtration plants which they can use to make drinking water out of any source of water, regardless how filthy.

An for space travel it makes perfect sense to me.  It cuts down on the amount of drinking water they need to stow aboard at the beginning of the flight, thereby reducing weight for lift off.  Water is pretty heavy.

you are out mustering and you are thirsty and you come to a cristle clear stream and you have a big drink of cool water and you let your horse drink then mount up and ride up stream and behold about 100 yards on there is what we used to say  ''a deadie lying in the water no longer whole but melting away in the cristle clear water'' what can you do but suck your guts in and just ride on .i m o its in our minds what is clean and what is not and water is going to be an issue that can't be ignored.

Ewww yuck! I do not think I would drink that! Gross!
  • quietone said on May 17, 2008....
Skald ~ I forget but I know your water comes from some different system in Iceland right?  I didn't quite understand the "piplline" part.. as where does that pipe start from?

Hungry ~ well, I am afraid we all have already drank (drunk?) this kind of "treated" water more than once.  ewww... I know.
  • quietone said on May 17, 2008....
Wombie ~ I bet he knows all about "treated pee" water then.  It is pretty yuck, but... I bet that is what I drink every day.. right here in the "city" water... ewww.

  • quietone said on May 17, 2008....
soaring ~ I didn't know that about the army portable filtration system.. that is pretty cool.  But, I did know that NASA was doing that because of the weight of the water that they "carry" ... and it would make lift off lighter.  Its just that "idea" that one would be drinking the filtered "pee" of the person sitting next to you... eww..ya know?
  • quietone said on May 17, 2008....
secret ~ well what do you think is in that "Jersey" water??  that is ewww in itself.  LOL  but I agree..

blue ~ yes I have heard those stories before about hunters who do the same thing.. then go upstream..
  • quietone said on May 17, 2008....
diabolic ~ I agree... I think its the part knowing that one would be drinking the "filtered pee" of the person sitting beside you... that is just a gross thought!

I read that Urine Therapy has been practised in India since ages. But you have to drink your own. At least you know it's your own.

I think I would pass on the passed water. But that reminds me of a funny thing I considered. Two years ago I climbed a mountain with a friend and on a ridge leading to the summit there was a sign that said we should not urinate on the north side of the mountain because far below was a reservoir containing drinking water for a nearby cities and towns. Peeing on the south side was okay however. At the time I thought, "If I pee here my water will be filtered through the earth and will mingle with the natural ground water. I doubt anything distasteful will remain if any of my water reaches the reservior. Most likely the plants will drink up first. And what about the deer, monkeys, rabbits, stoats, wild bore, bear and other creatures that inhabit the northern mountainside. What's preventing them from contributing to the mineral content of the reservior waters?" Still, I respectfully obeyed the sign.

That is disgusting but it's probably something that's been going on for along time.

Maybe we should just drink out of the water supplied to our bath tubs and showers. It's cleaner right ?

  • quietone said on May 18, 2008....

scipio ~ I would still have a hard time swallowing that!

hotaka ~  we humans (or most of us anyway) are so abiding aren't we?

Cman ~ I think that is what they are calling the "grey water".. It is probably just as "pure" as the socalled bottled "spring water" people pay for.  I myself have drank/drunk.. out of a stream when I was a kind many many times.

  • queenparanoia said on May 18, 2008....
ewwwww... hell no!!!! kinda remind me of waterworld... where they drink  their pee to survive...
  • quietone said on May 18, 2008....
I didn't see that movie.  glad I didn't!  LOl  but, I guess, we do it already and don't even know it.

you know, i'm pretty icked out by the idea, but i'm laughing hysterically at CW's comment--i haven't heard/seen someone use the expression "to the max" in a long time! :D
