INTERESTING CONVERSATION

An Atheist Professor of Philosophy speaks to his Class on the Problem Science has with GOD, the ALMIGHTY.

He asks one of his New Christian Students to stand and . . .

Professor : You are a Christian, aren't you, son?

Student    : Yes, sir.

Professor : So you Believe in GOD ?

Student    : Absolutely, sir.

Professor : Is GOD Good ?

Student    : Sure.

Professor : Is GOD ALL - POWERFUL ?

Student    : Yes.

Professor : My Brother died of Cancer even though he Prayed to GOD to Heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill.. But GOD didn't. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?

( Student is silent )

Professor : You can't answer, can you ? Let's start again, Young Fella. Is GOD Good?

Student    : Yes.

Professor : Is Satan good ?

Student    : No.

Professor : Where does Satan come from ?

Student    : From . . . GOD . . .

Professor : That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this World?

Student    : Yes.

Professor : Evil is everywhere, isn't it ? And GOD did make

everything. Correct?

Student    : Yes.

Professor : So who created evil ?

(Student does not answer)

Professor : Is there Sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the World, don't they?

Student    : Yes, sir.

Professor : So, who Created them ?

( Student has no answer )

Professor : Science says you have 5 Senses you use to Identify and Observe the World. Tell me, son . . . Have you ever Seen GOD?

Student    : No, sir.

Professor : Tell us if you have ever Heard your GOD?

Student    : No , sir.

Professor : Have you ever Felt your GOD, Tasted your GOD, Smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any Sensory Perception of GOD for that matter?

Student    : No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

Professor : Yet you still Believe in HIM?

Student    : Yes.

Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?

Student    : Nothing. I only have my Faith.

Professor : Yes, Faith. And that is the Problem Science has.

Student    : Professor, is there such a thing as Heat?

Professor : Yes.

Student    : And is there such a thing as Cold?

Professor : Yes.

Student    : No sir. There isn't.

( The Lecture Theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events )

Student    : Sir, you can have Lots of Heat, even More Heat, Superheat, Mega Heat, White Heat, a Little Heat or No Heat. But we don't have anything called Cold. We can hit 458 Degrees below Zero which is No Heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as Cold. Cold is only a Word we use to describe the Absence of Heat. We cannot Measure Cold. Heat is Energy. Cold is Not the Opposite of Heat, sir, just the Absence of it.

( There is Pin - Drop Silence in the Lecture Theatre )

Student    : What about Darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as Darkness?

Professor : Yes. What is Night if there isn't Darkness?

Student    : You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the Absence of Something. You can have Low Light,  Normal Light, Bright Light, Flashing Light . . . But if you have No Light constantly, you have nothing and its called Darkness, isn't it? In reality, Darkness isn't. If it is, were you would be able to make Darkness Darker, wouldn't you?

Professor : So what is the point you are making, Young Man ?

Student    : Sir, my point is your Philosophical Premise is flawed.

Professor : Flawed ? Can you explain how?

Student    : Sir, you are working on the Premise of Duality. You argue there is Life and then there is Death, a Good GOD and a Bad GOD. You are viewing the Concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can't even explain a Thought. It uses Electricity and Magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view Death as the Opposite of Life is to be ignorant of the fact that Death cannot exist as a Substantive Thing.  Death is Not the Opposite of Life: just the Absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your Students that they evolved from a Monkey?

Professor : If you are referring to the Natural Evolutionary Process, yes, of course, I do.

Student    : Have you ever observed Evolution with your own eyes, sir?

( The Professor shakes his head with a Smile, beginning to realize where the Argument is going )

Student    : Since no one has ever observed the Process of Evolution at work and cannot even prove that this Process is an on - Going Endeavor, Are you not teaching your Opinion, sir? Are you not a Scientist but a Preacher?

( The Class is in Uproar )

Student    : Is there anyone in the Class who has ever seen the Professor's Brain?

( The Class breaks out into Laughter )

Student    : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's Brain, Felt it, touched or Smelt it? . . . No one appears to have done so. So, according to the Established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have No Brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then Trust you
r Lectures, sir?

(The Room is Silent. The Professor stares at the Student, his face unfathomable)

Professor : I guess you'll have to take them on Faith, son.

Student    : That is it sir . . . The Link between Man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that Keeps Things Moving & Alive.

NB:
I believe you have enjoyed the Conversation . .. . and if so . . . You'll probably want your Friends / Colleagues to enjoy the same . . . won't you? Forward them to Increase their Knowledge . . . or FAITH.

It turned out later that the student is Albert Einstein (?)

Yes, I was thinking this was a hell of a clever student. So it was Albert Einstein but there is a question m ark there. Anyway this was very good.

    Great post, Worf.
It reminds me of the brain surgeon who said, "I've never seen a single thought, yet I know they exist."
  • exhibit_c said on May 16, 2008....
All very clever, but Einstein was not a Christian.

Skald: Yes, I thought it was a very clever exchange.

Pickers: I like that.  "I've never seen a single thought, yet I know they exist." ; )

Exhibit C: Yes, hence the question mark.  Peace and Long Life

the angry atheist has always occupied the worst philosophical position, i've always felt. :>

however, i'm sorry to say that according to snopes, this is an urban legend.

Ed, there were certain key things in this email that led me to believe that the authenticity was suspect, not the least of which is saying that Einstein was a Christian.  I think that most people know that Albert Einstein got out of Nazi Germany just before the "Final Solution."

My point as with most of the things I publish here is, listen to the message.  The message is that we have so much faith in things that we can't see, but know must exist because there is direct evidence it does, things like thought.  When it comes to something outside of ourselves, however; we balk.  We balk at the idea that anything can influence our thinking or our lives whether it be for good or bad. We balk at the idea of God or the divine influencing anything that we do.  We need to believe that we are in control, And that's the point of the post.  Peace and Long Life My Friend.

The word thought is given to describe a reaction in the brain, which we know exists because we can witness the reaction. The brain is something we can prove exists by cutting someone’s skull open. Darkness is the name given to a lack of light and cold is a name to describe low temperature. Great, so the bible is a name given to a fictional book, God is the name people give to a fictional being and religion is then name given to mass delusion.

    Your point is?

Evolution can and has been witnessed. Go to a museum and "witness" for yourself the many transitional fossils from one species to another.

Silver - Atheists are only angry when religion effects our way of life, it is currently affecting our lives consistently so there for we react to it. Worst Philosophical position? Explain that one?

SG: angry atheism is the worst philosophical position b/c it's almost invariably not atheism so much as anti-christian, and as such arises from a place of hurt & resentment, rather than genuine intellectual questioning, SG. angry atheism specifically--and note that here i am not referring to all forms of atheism, just that particular style--is nothing but glorified self-pity. it's why such atheists are angry: b/c they're mad at the christian god and therefore lash out at anything associated with it.

frankly, i can't help feeling a little sorry for angry atheists. IMX, they're uniformly so wound up in their anger there's no room in their heart for anything else.

I wondered when that old chestnut would be used and congratulation Silver you were the first in this post to use it! Not sure you won anything but well done anyway.

I don’t dislike Christians; I dislike the religion they defend. I dislike the Islamic Faith and I dislike the Jewish Faith and I dislike any other religion that claims to know more about the universe than anyone else simply because they "Have faith" they are right.

Atheists are not Atheists because we were abused by priests when we were little, took drugs, were alcoholic or anything else that would be considered a life shaping experience. We don’t believe because when the religious make a claim about god and cant prove it then why should we just accept it and move on. Religion has spread through our school system; it has spread through our political system and has been the biggest cause of war in Human History. Fact.

Please don’t assume that because im tired of people talking with this holyer than thou attitude that I have a problem. The work of the religious to prove their religion is true is ALL still ahead of them even after thousands of years.

SG, there's no need to bristle: i didn't say you were an angry atheist.

    ed
  • StupidGenius said on Sep 03, 2008....

No bristle, just a firm statement of policy lol ;)

    SG

  • silverwhisper said on Sep 05, 2008....
so, just so i'm clear: are you saying that there's no such thing as angry atheists such as i've described, SG?

    ed
  • StupidGenius said on Sep 05, 2008....

    I’ve got no Idea Silver,

I think you would find more anti Christians in other faiths than you would if surveying a cross section of all types. If Muslims follow their Koran then they must hate Christians and Jews. Jews normally get on with Christians but don’t quite understand the Jesus fascination and Christians feel they have the best of the Jewish faith with the added bonus of Jesus. The problem is that most of these faiths teach, "We are the Truth" so when that happens they segregate themselves and breed contempt for others.

What do you mean when you say Angry Atheist, angry with what?

    SG

  • silverwhisper said on Sep 06, 2008....
it's a type of atheist one finds rather often online, SG, if you've not encountered the type, then you must not have spent that much time online for very long.

Oh worf, are you just going to pop up in every post and try and get people not to talk to me? Am I interrupting your little playtime? Poor poor worf. If I get you a pacifier and a little bottle of milk, wrap you in a blanky and read you a story will you promise to go night night like a good little boy?

    Grow up lol

    SG

  • silverwhisper said on Sep 07, 2008....
SG, if you wanna be abusive to the person whose blog you're infesting, well, feel free continuing to provide evidence why worf is absolutely right about you, but know this: it means that in addition to being a drooling wanker, you're a vacuous, intellectually dishonest idiot. your S:N is positively abysmal.

now, i know the way to get you to shut up is to employ expletives b/c nothing gets your panties in a bunch faster than a few well-chosen 4 letter words, but out of respect for worf, i won't do that.

but i will say this: you telling worf to grow up is absolutely the second-most deeply hypocritical thing i've ever seen on soulcast. so for that, thank you: i really needed a laugh this morning.

    You rock Ed!
  • StupidGenius said on Sep 07, 2008....

Ed, Shut up. You haven’t got a clue what you are talking about (isn’t the first time) Worf has been popping up all over the place, in many blogs with childish comments so this is but one of my responses telling him to grow up. I don’t swear at people unless prompted. I prefer to argue with logic and worf is unable to defend himself so he has resorted to childish comments.

Your comments don’t bother me in the slightest. You call me a wanker and then say "but out of respect for worf, i won't do that" something slightly contradictory there. I don’t expect any better from you, Worf or pickersplock who doesn’t even seem to have an argument. I think he is just here to put his head up yours or worfs behind.

If you cant have a constructive argument then don’t comment. If you cant defend your position then don’t comment. If you have a point to make then make it. Don’t just lick worf ass without knowing what you’re talking about.

Lets continue the discussion shall we?

I do believe that today has gone well so far. I went to the church to do my usual work and they didn't say anything about me not showing up for Sunday Service. I think that's wonderful. I think that I will do just fine upon completely realizing that...
