We finally took my free Christmas turkey (from last Christmas!) from the freezer to make room for other stuff---and it has been in "defrost mode" since Saturday!

I almost tossed it with the garbage today, but was too lazy.

Now hubby says he has a relative that will cook it for us--on Thursday!

Tell me, please!  Is this safe?

Guess I could look it up on the Internet, but this made a good impromptu post....

So what say you?

Cook or toss?

travelr712:  Right!  And every time I barf, I will think of you!  Ha...  How you been, dude?

Wombat I should think it is safe. But I don't know much about turkeys.
  • secretlife said on May 13, 2008....
it's perfectly safe ....it's in the fridge defrosting, right????

As long as it's in the fridge and the vacuum wrap hasn't loosened, it's fine. You'll know if it's bad when you unwrap it....it'll have an odor.

I was going to say the same thing as Twyla.  I love turkey, hope it still is good.

hmmm sorry but for me toss it.

you might get camplobacteria from it.

just to be safe toss it...

skald:  Thanks.  I don't know much about tthem, either!  I remember the first one I tried to cook--forgot to take the insides out first!  Yuk!

secretlife:  Yes, it has been in the fridge defrosting since Sat. morning--and it is now Wed!  Tomorrow is when someone is supposed to cook it--or at least--receive it!

Twylarants:  Yes, it is sealed up as good as new--just kind of soft when you poke at it.  I will warn the cook about it, and see what they say.  If it smells--garbage time!  And I may not eat any of it, anyway!

crybabylu:   I like the white meat of the breast, but get tired of it quick.  We should have cooked this ages ago!

Queen:  I would like to toss it, but hubby likes to be right all the time.  He says, "It's all right!  It's been in the fridge!"  He never believes anything I say unless I keep on and convince him finally--or until he hears the same thing I am saying from someone else.

i understand that defrosting a frozen turkey is done most efficiently by keeping it in cool (not cold and definitely not hot) water. btw, i think the butterball hotline might be staffed year-round, in case you get concerned, wombat. :>

I would also say it is still good.  Enjoy!!!

Wombie~ If it's a larger turkey...over 16lb, it should sit in the back of the fridge for 3 days to properly defrost. The coldest part of the fridge is the back, and 3 days ensure that it's completely defrosted. If it's over 23lb it might take another day. If the vacuum wrap tears, bacteria can get in, so as long as the wrap is still taut it's fine.

The method Ed mentioned is faster, and great if you purchase a frozen turkey too late to defrost it in the fridge. But it's very important to change the water frequently, don't allow it to become room temp, it must be very cold.
The safest way to defrost anything is in the back of the fridge where the warm air won't affect it each time the door is opened.
I always bought a fresh turkey, never frozen, and a perk of being a butcher was the chance to pick the perfect bird for myself before they sold out. All of us did that, and we'd keep them in our cooler for 7,8 days instead of bringing them home

When I worked in meat rooms I gave this advice at least 50 times each holiday and no one's died yet.
    I don't think...

silverwhisper:  Moot point now!  The relative said she could cook it "maybe Saturday."  So--out it just went!  Hubby put it in the trash.....what a waste.   My bad.

quietone:  Well, if it was still good, it is too late now.  I feel bad about the whole thing now.

Twylarants:  Sorry (but thank you!) for going to so much trouble with that!  I have learned alot about safe handling now after this, anyway!  I hope to do better next time if I get another turkey to deal with.  I should have cooked it, even if I didn't feel up to it.
