We had this discusion at lunch about greeting strangers. I don't often make eye contact or say "hello" when walking down the street. I may glance over at someone and node, but I try not to make direct eye contact. I have found for some reason when I do acknowledge a stranger in passing all the sudden this person thinks I'm interested in their life.....and I'm not! They start talking to me and telling me their life story, it's more than I ever need to know and frankly I find it rude, so I don't make that contact. Some of the women at my lunch table found me to be rude and felt that I should always acknowledge people...they said "it's just polite."

So, do you say "hello" to everyone that passes by you, or do you walk by without a galnce?

Coming from the northeast, my inclination has always been to look the other way. Like you said, I'm not interested in others' problems...I don't want to hear it.
When we moved down south 10 years ago, people greeted us everywhere we went. It was weird. It doesn't happen much anymore, and I'm just as glad. Working in retail, I have to greet everyone who walks in the store. That's just the way it is down here.
I love going back home for vacation and walking around the supermarket. Not one employee makes eye contact or sends a phony "Hi, how are you?" in my direction.
    I love it.

usually, i acknowledge a stranger's existence with a nod. people i sorta know, such as other tenants in my building or coworkers, i'll greet properly, with a "good morning" or something along those lines.

nice to see you again, biglove, it's been a while!

i don't think it is rude to nod- besides nodding is a universal form of acknowledgement- and it also clearly defines your boundries to the person you are nodding too- its better then saying hey don't talk to me-
