The 7.9-magnitude quake devastated a region of small cities and towns set amid steep hills north of Sichuan's provincial capital of Chengdu. Striking in midafternoon, it emptied office buildings across the country in Beijing and could be felt as far away as Vietnam.    The death toll exceeds 12,000. My heart goes out to those families.

Coincidentally, I was in an electronics store and there was a video playing of the beautiful natural scenery of Sichuan, then later I went home and I saw the earthquake news yesterday. The footage didn't look so bad but so many people died. I think it was in 1976 when they had a major quake in a poorly constructed city where the buildings just folded like cards. I can't remember the death toll now but it was a major shame for the government who had permitted the city to be erected with such poor materials in the name of progress. Of course, once the Group of Four took over a scapegoat was found and blamed.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the death toll exceeded 12,000 in Sichuan province alone, and 18,645 were still buried in debris in the city of Mianyang, near the epicenter of Monday's massive, 7.9-magnitude quake. The Sichuan Daily newspaper reported on its Web site that more than 26,000 people were injured in Mianyang.

    Thank you hotaka.

I watched the news again last night. The story ran for about 10 minutes or more. This time there was footage of collapsed buildings and a construction expert looked at the footage and commented on how poorly many buildings had been made in an earthquake zone. He said that if no earthquake occurs for 50 years or more, people become complacent and building regulations grow lax. Progress is more important than safety. I guess they will think again. Yes, I heard many people were still buried alive in the rubble. It must be terrible for many people there now.
