As you can see, I managed to survive the roller skating adventure. I only fell on my ass once! But I didn't break it, so all is well. I hadn't been on any type of skates for years, so it took me a few minutes to get used to the feeling again. I thought I was doing pretty well, but the moment I stepped out onto the rink, my feet just swooshed out from under me.

It was pretty damn embarrassing too. There were a lot of women there (lots of Nat's friends) and everyone was laughing at me. Apparently it was pretty comical how I flew up in the air and crashed down on my butt. It was like slipping on a banana peel.

But after I got my bruised ass (and ego) up off the floor, I did pretty well. It seemed like such a lame thing to do to go roller skating. But it was actually a lot of fun. There weren't any kids there either. It was an adults only skating session. And they played a lot of really good music too. At least if you like 80's hair metal. That was the theme. But I'm ridiculously entertained by bands like Poison and Motely Crue, so I thought it was an awesome time.

They had a lot of flashing lights and crap like that. It was like being transported back in time when people did roller disco. But now I see why they did that because it's fun. Only the clothes are a little better now. After awhile, I was skating pretty good and getting into it. But I had trouble stopping, so I'd usually just head straight for this low wall where people were sitting watching the skaters. And I'd just slam into it full force.

Needless to say, I was sore yesterday. My back hurt (probably from when I fell down) and my legs were all cramped up. I had a blister on my foot too. But at least I got hurt this time doing something fun for a change. Instead of just walking into cabinets and stuff.

It's been a long time since I've been feeling really good, and for awhile, we didn't really ever go anywhere or do anything particularly fun. It felt awesome to be out and enjoying life for a change. I'd totally do it again if I had the chance. It's good exercise too! And usually my exercise routine consists of walking to my car and laying on the couch.

Maybe I'll take up rollerblading again? I could skate to work instead of driving. With the price of gas, that might not be such a bad idea....

OMG this takes me back.  I haven't done any rollerskating or discoskating in years, but remember doing it in the late 70s.

It is amazingly good exercise for the legs.  You'd probably better work on stopping though if you're gonna skate to work. (or build some padded walls at the front door)

I am so glad to hear you are still all in one piece, no broken anything!!  :)  Also so happy to hear you had a good time and smiled and laughed.. you needed a day like that.. I hope you get to have many more.  I'd hold off on the rolerblading until you learn how to stop though... LOL

    Poor, ET!
Your hand just got better from the peach episode, and now your butt's sore!

Sounds like fun to me!  I love the atmosphere and the music--and watching!  I tried to learn to skate when I was 40, fell and broke my arm and dislocated my elbow!  I couldn't get up the nerve to try again, but I regret it.  I missed out on alot of fun!  Glad you had a good time in spite of the "wall-stopping!"  Hope you go again sometime soon and you both will enjoy the fun and the music!  I am envious!

I'm glad skating was fun. :) I always stopped the same way you did, by slamming into a wall or falling on my butt. :-D It sounds like they played really good music and that everyone had a blast. That's awesome.

Hard to beak the ass kyle but you could break your bone there. Can't remember the English word, We call it the tail bone.
Seems like you had a good time and were doing well after the fall. Music you liked. Movement and excise it fun, Maybe you will do some more skating.

diabolic--It was a lot of fun!

uniquely--I really should learn to stop better before I try to skate to work huh? That could be dangerous!

quietone--I really did need a night of laughter and ridiculous fun. It's been too long since I've done that! But yes, I do need to learn to stop before I venture outside with skates :-P

pickers--I know, I'm a disaster area! But I feel alright today. Not much harm done. It was too much fun to care that I smashed my ass!

wombat--I can't believe you broke your arm and dislocated your elbow. Ouch! Yeah, if I did that, I'd probably never try it again either! Luckily I didn't break anything and it was a lot of fun :-)

Infernal--I recommend slamming into the wall before falling on your butt. It hurts less! But it was a lot of fun and good cheesy music :-P

skald--We call it a tailbone here too. And I'm glad I didn't break it for real! It was a great time and I think I will do it again sometime :-)

I'm glad to read that you survived your outing to the local roller rink.  I haven't done that in...well lets just say that you were likely just a twinkle if you know what I mean.

I was never any god at it either.  I could ice skate pretty respecibly, but never quite got the hang of standing on wheels and trying to move about without making a total fool of myself.  At my age I do believe that once I was finished having my head examined for a deficiency of active brain  cells, I would be in a full body cast for several weeks.

Sounds like you had a great time. I don't know how I'd be on roller skates. I'd probably fall way more than just once.

Rollerblading to work isn't a bad plan. But I what happens when you get tired after a mile? Will you hitchhike the rest of the way ;-)

i was hoping you were gonna write about this! dude, i could never get the hang of roller skates--ice skates are a whole lot easier to handle, if you ask me and like infernal, i seem to recall only ever stopping by collding into things when roller skating, too!

hm...blading to work? be glad you don't live in san francisco! :>

Boy....that brings back the memories....going to the "skatin' rink" used to be such the cool thing to do...for some reason whenever I think of skating...Billy Squier's "Stroke me" starts playing in my head!  (or was it stroke it? either way, when I was 12-13, I didn't know what he was talking about anyway!!) sigh....those were fun days.....I could never do the couples skate though because I couldn't skate backwards....

glad you had fun!  Hope your butt is feeling better!!!  :-)  Minnie

Soul Cast decided to cut off the rest of my message and double up on my excitement.

What I was saying was I remember is rainy Saturdays at Livingston Roller Rink (which no longer exists) - so much fun!  Songs from the 70's and 80's, ladies's choice, adults only, ahhh... the memories came flooding in.  I was luckier than you, though - no falling on ass since I was a figure skater at the time too.  Now, not sure I would be able to stand!

Are four wheels better than two?  who can say but I think it would be fun to try again.

Oh, price of gas... Come on. It's cheap where you are compared almost everywhere else.
But it sounds like a good time. Hey, I would have loved to hear those old tunes again. I used to go roller skating and ice skating when I was in elementary school. It was fun though just going around in circles seemed lame after a while. There were always hot shots who could whizz around backwards and sideways and look super smooth on wheels. Me, I just went round and round, like the Ratt song. Hey, did they play that? Glad you had fun. That's what life is about. Live for the moment and have a good time.

I love roller skating it is a very good source of excercise. I can skate forwards and backwards I keep at it waiting for them to come up with "Roller Skating With The Stars" just kidding I'll just sit back and watch you guy's bruise your ass's .
  • evil_twin said on May 13, 2008....
soaring--I've only been ice skating once before and I thought that was a lot harder for me. That ice is slippery! I was being lapped by three year olds and I realized that maybe I was better off just watching everyone else :-P

brit--It was fun! But I live a little too far away from work to actually skate. I suppose someone could do it, but probably not me!

Mr. Box--If I got tired of blading, I could always grab someone's bumper and have them pull me along!

queen--We probably will do it again sometime :-)

silver--Like I said above to soaring, I always found ice skating to be way harder. Balancing myself on a little metal blade was difficult!

FG--I loved your enthusiasm! ;-) I actually thought it was easier to get good balance using 4 wheels instead of 2. That's cool that you used to be a figure skater!

Minnie--I can't skate backwards either. We just held hands and called that a 'couples skate'. I was just hoping I wouldn't fall down and bring Nat with me!

hotaka--Gas is not cheap to us. It might cost more elsewhere, but I've never lived elsewhere! For my whole life, a tank of gas cost between $12-$25. Now it's $60+! That's a huge jump in a very small amount of time. And yes, they actually did play Ratt. How could they not, right? :-P

cayenne--Roller Skating with the Stars! That would be a fun show. I don't think they'll be calling me up to join it though :-P
  • Twylarants said on May 13, 2008....
Did they play Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll"? That song always reminds me of drinking coffee, smoking, and gossiping with my girlfriends while our boys power skated around the rink until they'd get thrown off for knocking people down.
  • hotaka said on May 13, 2008....
Oh, I know it's not cheap. Even the U.S. is paying too much. But yes, it is more almost everywhere else. Seven years ago we filled a tank 3/4s for 2,000 yen ($20). Now we just top it off for 2,000.
