Are you afraid of flying?
Apparently most people are, according to my unofficial poll. I don't ask everyone, of course, but if someone looks slightly nervous I'll ask them if flying makes them uncomfortable.
I'm surprised how many have answer yes! Actually more people say they hate to fly than say they don't mind flying.

College age people can take it or leave it...they have no problem with flying. Seniors seem to enjoy it, but I'm talking 70 and up here, not youngish seniors like me...lol.
Affluent people just accept it for what it is, an inconvenient way to get to their destination quickly. The more you fly, the more at ease you are with it, I guess.

I hate flying. I've heard the aerodynamic explanation, but even after watching 20 take-offs a day, I still don't get it.

So, that's my question...are you afraid to fly?

I love to fly. I had my first plane ride when I was 40, and now I can't get enough of it. I wish I would have flown at an earlier age, because I really would have loved to have been a pilot.

I've made the personal choice not to fly anywhere.  If I can't get there by driving, I most likely will choose not to go, unless it's absolutely critical.  It has more to do with what I've experienced in airports and dealing with airlines, than with fear of flying.

I am afraid to fly. I always have been. But I used to get through it and be alright. But after 9/11 not only am I afraid to crash from engine failure or something, I'm worried about terrorists. I haven't been on a plane in a few years and I'm not sure I can bring myself to do it!

No I'm not scared of flying. I mean what's to be scared of? You can't even tell you're moving for most of the time. Except I used to hate when I was a kid cause my ears always used to hurt like hell. Not anymore though.. so alls good.

I have months where I travel every week and spend 2 days a week flying.  I have no fear of flying.  In fact, its a relaxing time for me because there's no email, no contact w/the "ground", so to speak.  I sleep, listen to my ipod..... read.

I, like many who commented above, hate airports!  And, I have found, security varies GREATLY from airport to airport, which doesn't leave one with a sense of comfort.  For example, I have made it through security with purfume and lotion (I had forgotten it was in my bag), and I have been pulled aside for having mascara in my bag (again, forgot it was in there).

I know you've probably heard this thousands of times, but flying is much safer than driving.  I think I also heard, at any point during the day, there are 3000 planes in the air at one time.   - and over 99% of the time, they take off and land safely... I know, the fear is in that less than 1%, huh?

I would rather fly than drive for sure.  I don't mind flying at all.. its dealing with the mess at the airports.. check ins and outs... that is the worse part!!  Yes, it is funny how airodinamics can lift a huge mungo plane off the ground and keep it "up there" isn't it?
  • pickersplock said on May 12, 2008....
I'm not afraid to fly, but I don't particularly care for landings and take offs.

Hey, a little rest did me some good!  I've got my punctuation back!

lol!! my nanna used to say...if god wanted us to have holes in our ears he would have given us them!! so I couldnt help but think of that when I read your title and description :-)

I get nervous when I fly anywhere, but I am more scared of terrorists  than actually flying..

I do know someone who is terrified of flying who bought this herb thingy 'natura calm'  amd apparantly it worked!! even if only as a placebo for her fear...  so it may be worth trying?  :-) xx

Only way to get out of my country now is by flying. No, I don't hate it.
  • soaringraven said on May 12, 2008....

I haven't flown in over thirty years actually,  I didn't mind it then but I don't see myself jumping through all the hoops at the airport these days.  My kids fly regularly and don't seem to mind the airport mess at all.  I just don't see it myself.  I think that is the main reason I don't fly now.  The airport thing, not the actual flying.

Then again I have always hated airports.  They are just too damn crowded, they stink and they are (or were at least) havens for all sorts of unsavories.

I dont like flying, being midair petrifies me. I hate the sudden rise and fall, makes me sick. I hate sitting on my rump for hours. I hate anticipation. Being up there is just strange for me, its not a place where we should be, hence God didnt give us wings...(grins)....I love to be on my feet, to be in control of my mobility.
  • silverwhisper said on May 13, 2008....
doesn't scare me, no. i always thought that was actually a pretty rare fear, to be honest!

Yes I am afraid to fly. I have been visiting alot of local air feilds lately and I am seriously concidering obtaining my pilots licence. Over the years I have always wanted to. I think If I were in control of things in flight I would feel much more comfortable.

I love flying because I love to look down on the earth and find geographical patterns and tales of the earth's history. I prefer smaller aircraft though as they fly lower and I can shoot better photos from the window. Doors off is best. Big commercial flights are okay but they tend to be long and I get cramped. I think by now I have taxied down the runway for take-off about...oh... 83 or 84 times in my adult life, not including chartered Cesnas and helicopters I have flown in.

I'm not afraid of flying at all. I've done too much of it since I was small to be afraid of it.

This is interesting because my unscientific poll last night  had 7 of 16 people afraid to fly, while this poll has 13 of 21 not afraid, 5 afraid, and 3 undecided (Blue hasn't flown, Des is afraid of terrorists, Queenie is afraid sometimes).
I asked random people last night rather than people who appeared to be nervous.

I'm surprised how many people aren't put off by severe weather. Tornado watches, high winds, and torrential rains caused massive delays yesterday. People arrived in the gate area 8:30 in the morning for a 10:30 departure to LaGuardia, and didn't board until 7:10 pm. Were they furious! Two couples at the bar were particularly vocal about their unhappiness with everyone and everything except Mother Nature.
They seemed to think the delay was a conspiracy on the part of the vendors to take all their money.  They decided the way to outsmart us was to spend money only on liquor.... no food, no snacks, just booze.  The bartender convinced them to eat something by explaining that the pilot wouldn't allow them to board if they appeared drunk, and they'd have to sober up and fly in the morning.
Imagine how angry all the sober passengers would have been if they had to wait longer while the pilot decided if the drunks could get on his plane!

I'm not afraid of flying....for the simple fact that I think I've decided it will just never happen again....unless of course the world was coming to an end and I have to get on an airplane to get the hell out of Dodge....but of course I would first drink any alcohol I could find and look for those little pills that make you forget that soaring through the air in a billion pound metal object should be impossible....but no I'm not afraid...
  • NotWhoYouThink said on May 13, 2008....

I don't mind flying. I like going to the airports and seeing all the hustle and bustle!  Of course, after 9/11 I was not going to get near an airport but I have come to the conclusion that when it is my time to go, it's time- plane, train, or automobile! :-)

Twyla, thanks for reading my junk! As a yankee as well, you rock! Rant on!
