Starting our Sunday drive and the phone rings. Now it rings when I can answer. Pálmi is driving. This is Gummi phoning from Germany. He says I need a translator. Will you talk to our chauffeur. He  does not speak English. Will you tell him that we need flour. He gave the phone to the driver and he said hello. I was not sure if I remembered what flour was in German. Now I have not spoke it for some time and I felt rusty. It usually all comes back in one day when I am in Germany but I said to the man I think the word they are trying to say is mehl , they need mehl.  That is flour in German and I was right. You know that is used for baking I said to the man.  He understood what the boys wanted and I never asked Gummi why they needed flour. Gummi said that the man had not believed him at first when he gave  him the phone and said that his mother was on the line lol He said they had 30C or 86F when we had about 50F 10 C, They were going to play that night on a festival there and they played just before the most famous band was on. He is coming home today.
We went on our tour. We stopped in a small wood and the children had fun This wood is in our town.

The kids were happy when we saw a rabbit, He tried to hide from me. There are some rabbits living in this area. Some one turned rabbits loose there about 30 or 40 years ago and they live wild there.

Got you

This is where the kids wanted to go originally. To the  beach they said so we went to the beach in Reykjavík.

Here they let hot water run into the sea, so it is a bit warmer to swim there. When I was a kid we sometimes swam in the cold sea. Then for years there was nothing here. They had polluted the sea with something they let out there in pipes but they cleaned that up years ago now.

This is filled with warm water in the summers.

They are still here and used to be a bit prettier. They are since the war. This is very near to Reykjavík airport which was build during world war 2 by the British. I remember when those nissa huts were  used as changing cabins for the beach. That was years ago. When I  used to go swimming in the sea. I was 11.

I was using two cameras and when I came home I started uploading my pictures to my computer. The pictures from the little camera came out alright but I had trouble loading the others. Then when I looked at them they were videos. Bad videos without sound. I had tuned the camera wrongly without noticing it. Here is one.

and isn't it funny how letting those rabbits go 40 years ago they've managed to survive?  leave it to the bunnies!

I enjoyed this post very much. Glad you got to talk to your son. Beautiful pictures as always, and I also liked the video, was there suppose to be an audio with it?
  • skald said on May 12, 2008....
Secret. Some people do ocean swimming here all year around but they are few and I am certainly not amongst them.lol  Yes, it is cold.
Rusty. Thanks Did you actually see the video? It turned just black on my screen but can be seen on Flickr. There was no audio as I have to turn that on, on the camera when I take video and this and more videos were done by accident. Most of them were showing my feet. lol

Sounds like a very good day.  The woods are very pretty and the beach is great as well.  Don't you think it is funny when rabbits stay very still because they think you can't see them if they don't move?
  • diabolicdame said on May 12, 2008....
Wow.. pretty pictures! The wood looks great! And good thing you know so many languages.. came in handy..
  • skald said on May 12, 2008....
U-I  I felt sorry for the little fellow. He was so freighted. Yes, it is funny how they think they won't be seen if they don't move. But he went also under the branches of a big tree. A little mouse did once the same thing. Tried to go under a thing and not move. Alas I could not get a picture.
Dia.  It often comes in handy to speak more than one language and I used to work in the National Museum of Iceland where I was often changing between 4 languages.

I like that wooded area skald.. what a nice place to venture into.  The sea pictures are wonderful too..  I hope the water is warm enough for one to put their toes in to.. You did a good job tracking the rabbit down  and shooting it... well with your camera. LOL  I also wonder what Gummi wanted with flour?  You will have to ask him what he was baking.  So, his band was a starting band for a very famous group.. that is awesome... I bet soon they will be famous too.  Thanks skald for taking me along on your day.

What a nice way to spend the day!  I love it when you take us along on your outings, skald.  We get lots of bunnies in our front yard.  Bunnies and squirrels and chipmunks.   It's so cute when the bunnies chase each other around the yard.

    Very nice pictures, Skald!
  • quietone said on May 12, 2008....
oh, p.s. those beaches are so open, flat and long.. it looks like a perfect place to fly kites.  do they do a lot of kite flying there when its warmer?

Hi, I love your pictures as usual. I didn't realize that all the winter ice had melted.

That is a really intelligent thing to do--put warm water into the ocean so that swimming is more comfortable. I remember as a child that it could be so hot outside and the water would turn us blue very quickly.

In my old Langensheidt's "flour" comes out : feines Mehl. When we looked up mehl we got: flour. It must be from the same root as the English "meal", which is usually thought of as coarse flour. What is flour in Icelandic?
  • skald said on May 12, 2008....
Quiet.  They have not been seeking fame. It has been more of a mission, playing the music they like. They actually had a great audience at this festival. It was a success. They used the flour to put on their black cloths, to make the cloths seem old. Gummi said.

Some do when the wind blows but not there necessarily. I mean about he kites
Mimi.  We don't have squirrels and chipmunks here but  I think they are so sweet. The bunnies are also not really in their original environment here. We did not use to have them but they seem to  make it here.
Trinov.  Yes the Icelandic word is from the same root as mehl but it is not just for  f flour but for yes meal, all kinds of things like whole wheat, potato flour. It is mjöl and then we have the word hveiti for only flour. Thanks for commenting.

Skald:  You sure seem to have the kids quite often and you do such nice fun things with them!  They must love being with you!  Funny about the flour...why did he need it?  Did you ever find out if he was going to bake you a cake or something? LOL!  I couldn't get the video to play, but it reminded me of my friend K when we were little.  Always up in trees!

No, they were not baking. They put the flour on their black cloths to make them look old at the concert. lol
