The page you were looking for no longer exists

You know the ones I'm talking about.

The one where boy meets girl and they fall in love and then there is a problem but there is alway a 'happily ever after' in the end!

I just love sappy movies with happy endings! All those "notting hill's and 'when harry met sally's. I love all the ones with tom hanks and meg ryan! Or something like 'serendipity' which is impossible but so sweet!

But recently I saw 'the roman holiday' and while I love Ms. Hepburn, I did not like the movie! Where was my happy ending? Why all the love if there was going to be no happy ending? It just felt incomplete. For me sappy movies and happy endings just go together! I know life is not perfect but thats why we have movies! Right?

So I'm just curious if I'm alone here. Do you like sappy movies? And if so, what about happy endings?

Well, I like to be realistic at least where books are concerned but why not make people happy with happy endings in movies. And after all even 9 years old kids like my granddaughter know the rules in movies and say he is going to win because it is always so in movies. I heard her say that yesterday.
  • diabolicdame said on May 11, 2008....
Hehe.. she's a smart kid skald.. I like people winning in movies! There's enough loosing in real life anyway! And yes I'm a lot more sober when it comes to books but even then I always read the ending before I reach it. Ack! I'm very impatient.
  • skald said on May 11, 2008....
Dia  Laughing out loud. heheh  I sometimes looked at the end too but it spoils everything . You are a smart girl too. :-)

    thanks for the congrats dame!

now to throw in my 2 cents....no. I don't really like sappy movies. They are cute, but I dunno, just not really my thing. I prefer action movies.
  • destinydiva said on May 12, 2008....
I totally agree!!  I am left totally gutted if a sappy movie doesnt have a happy ending :-)   and I love love love sappy movies with happy endings!!

I don't like sad, depressing movies. I like movies that show real life situations. And I want them to turn out good.

    I love happy endings.

i'm a sucker for a happy ending--but i tend to find that i also like the ones that end tragically (e.g., moulin rouge).

I see no point in seeing a fiction movie without a happy ending, I also check the rare novel that I read to see if there is a happy ending. I started this as a teenager after I plowed through a thousand page Russian novel only to find that the heroine commits suicide. I felt angry as hell and cheated.

I guess my favorite movies all fall into that sappy-happy genre, although I like a little supernatural thrown in also if they can manage it. I liked the ghost appearance in Sleepless in Seatle, I loved the time change in The Lakehouse, I enjoyed Practical Magic and The Family Man, although An Officer and a Gentleman is probably my favorite movie in that genre, -except for Gigi, or Sense and Scensibility etc which some may not categorize as being that 'sappy'. It's seeing the right people get together in spite of the odds and society etc.

brit: You're welcome! And I think its pretty cool that you like action flicks better.. very few girls do..

des: I love ALL the movies you listed!! I could watch these over and over any number of times!! :-)

lfbno: I agree! They should turn out good!

cry: Yep... its the best way to end a movie!

Ed: Oh I cried at the ending of that movie! You're right.. those kinds get to me too.. and Moulin Rouge was so much like a bollywood movie too.. I loved it!

Trinov: Oh that must have sucked! Reading a 1000 page novel and reach that ending! No! lol.. I always check the endings before I reach them too.. and I love sappy movies with a supernatural twist! It just makes them so much more fun! I love practical magic! And I haven't seen An Officer and a Gentleman but I will now. I like your choice so I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Thanks.  :-)

Im a sucker for the happy-but-predictable endings =)
  • diabolicdame said on May 12, 2008....
Yeah they are always predictable.. I like them anyway too! hehe..
  • quietone said on May 12, 2008....
Oh, I like the sappy happy endings with a twist.  Did you ever watch "Ms. Potter"?  That is the kind I like.
  • diabolicdame said on May 12, 2008....
No I haven't it but anything with the word 'potter' in it, I like! Even if it is a different potter altogether! I will be checking it out.. thanks quietone! :-)
  • quietone said on May 12, 2008....
Oh, wait. LOL yes it is a way different "Potter"  it is about Beatrix Potter the author of all those childrens stories.. a wonderful wonderful movie.  I think you'd enjoy it though.

though roman holiday wasn't an italian movie...it was set in italy....and italian movies are notorious for tragic endings......
many people think romeo and juliet was actually shakespeare parodying italian tragedies....a nd not a serious piece at all.

    i like both.

roman holiday is one of my favorites EVER.
  • Fallyn said on May 12, 2008....
i meant both as in ...happy sappy ...and  not so happy.

though i like roman holiday and romeo and juliet.
  • pusscat said on May 12, 2008....
I lo-o-oove happy endings (enough crap in real life eh?!).  The more tragedy in between though, the better when the happy ending arrives.  I do like my sappy films interspersed with action too - Nicholas Cage - now there's a man that can do mega action AND happy-sappy - 'Gone in 60 Seconds'  and 'Con Air'. . .

Never saw the film the notebook but read the book - kept it too.  I still cry when I just try to relay that story to people.

I love, love, love the sappy happy ending movies.  I remember a time when I rented a movie for hubby and I to watch.....(I had already seen it).  I said you are not going to believe the way this ends.  He looked at me....and said really.....I can already tell you how it ends without watching.  We laughed.....the sappier the better.  The movie I am referring to is "For The Love Of The Game".  I am also a huge baseball fan.....so it was a perfect movie for me.   (Oh and by the way....I have seen Notting Hill about 102 times....lol)
  • brit said on May 12, 2008....
dame~ I was raised on action flicks, so I guess it kinda stuck! My mom loves action movies best too. I am attracted more to the actors in action flicks ;-P
  • diabolicdame said on May 14, 2008....
    pickersplock: Signed and sealed!  :-)

Fallyn: Hey!! There you are! How are you doing now? And thats an interesting about italian tragedies.. thanks..

pusscat: I agree! Too much crap in real life! :-D

Jenna: 102 here as well! What a coincidence! Hehe.. And I'm going to check out that movie you mentioned.. thanks!  :-)

brit: That I would have to agree with.. Bruce Willis beats Adam Sandler any day! (Sorry if the example isn't very good but those two came to my mind instantly for some reason! lol)  :-)
  • brit said on May 14, 2008....
dame~ hey, that's a good example. sandler is sometimes good for the funny, but def not for the action, wheras willis is good for the butt-kicking but the funny, not so much!

my best example I can think of on the fly: Jason Statham beats Ben Stiller/Wilson brothers (sorry if thats not a good example for ya too!) :-)
  • donq said on May 15, 2008....
I hate to admit it (because guys aren't supposed to like those kind of movies), but they are the best. I can't stand movies that don't have happy endings.

The best ones are the ones where the guy and girl are in relationships at the beginning of the movie, and they end up with each other at the end, and even though some feelings get hurt, everyone knows its for the best.

I wish life was like that.
  • diabolicdame said on May 15, 2008....
brit: Oh thats a excellent example. I mean can you imagine Ben Stiller doing an action flick? Now that would be funny! hehe.. :-)

donq: I'm glad you admitted it.. my kinda guy! And I agree about those kinda movies to.. they are nice.. like 'You've got mail'.. happy endings rock!
  • brit said on May 15, 2008....
dame~ LOL...I actually can picture Ben Stiller doing an action
movie---it would soooo turn out to be a comedy!! You're right with
that.. Like Dodgeball (now that's a hilarious flick with a lil dodgeball
    action...LOL)

ohhhh I think I'm getting it now. You like the movies with happy endings because life is seldom like that. right? :-)
  • diabolicdame said on May 16, 2008....
    Right! :-)
Its good to catch a break.. even if just in the movies..

Does third person stories bother you?
Do you not get a sense of caring for the character if they're unnamed and you don't get the classic description learning about the character, and instead have them thrown into the situation?...
