  hmmm not sure, its hard to make judgment when some crimes that are not life threatening can be more harmful long term to the victim.
  
  Yet, jail tends to bread certain aspects of bad behaviour, it is taught after all and not in bred. 
  
  Maybe if there were two tiers of punishment, the first rehabilitation which should be quite lengthy, then jail for those severe crimes, but isolated jail time with rehab.

  I was just reading an article from Playboy the subject.  And they were pointing out that a large percentage of our incarcerated are in there for petty crimes linked to the War on Drugs, then there is (in CA) the 3 strikes law that puts away many for 25 years. 
   
  They are put in jail, and in jail they eventually join a gang, it's pretty much required to survive the experience.  Once they are in a gang they get out and continue the behavior.  That we are making the situation worse with our current methods and like so many otherthings we've trid it the wrong way and it didn't work.

  To answer you travelr I think I didn't phrase what I wanted well enough and that's part of the limited comments, the other part is that is that I got bombed early on and that probably turned a lot of people off.

  well ok sean, but over 1000 views in two hours? that'd be nearly 100 views a minute. there just hasn't been that much activity here today. it takes months to get that many views normally.
   
  and two others are up over 300 in the same amount of time. it's just not something that happens here. something must be screwey with the way views are accounted since about 2pm today.

  I would like to see "tent cities" set up all across america....they are a hell of alot cheaper to build than prisons, and a lot less fun for criminals to be in....no frills.....no tv....no basketball hoops.....no weights.....just a good old fashioned chain gang for exercise! Put a guy in their for the 1st 30 to 90 days of incarceration and send them back to it when they misbehave in the big house......so many that are in prison are serving sentences that are short.

  Jail is an idea that hasn't worked. I don't see it as the best solution for anything at all. It was originally meant as a place to house those arrested, until their trial. It was not originally meant to be the punishment itself. It should not be. The punishment, if it is to be over a protracted period of time, should involve convicts supporting themselves, not being supported by the taxpayer. Anyone who believes in the current system hasn't bothered to think it through yet. The best system would be one that actually rehabilitates people and sets them on a better course, unlike the one we have now. The best system would add money to the system, not take money out of it.

  What's not working is that kinda bad people go to jail and become worse people.  Our gang problem is a direct result of this system.
