something woke me around 1:30 or so, local time. after tossing & turning to no avail, i got out of bed around 2:00. i've now been awake for 3.5 hours. a casual search on the insomnia tag turns up 14 results, such as jadelondon's rather popular entry about it.

i keep seeing commercials on TV about insomnia and how it's rather common, that most adults experience bouts w/ insomnia more than once/week.

for the past few weeks, i've been waking up around 4 or 4:30 (local time), and although i use that time to poke around here, my mood would probably be better were i safely abed.

in fashion, the hot phrase last year or the year before was that a new trend was "the new black". i'm left wondering: is insomnia the hot trend right now?

so how about you? struggle with it much? at all?

    Yes. It sucks.

You might or might not have dug up my entry about that. I got so desperate one night for sleep that I took a sedative (which is normally quite a loathsome idea to me). So yes, been there. It's rough! And then of course having to be cheerful for my 1 year old at 6:30 in the morning, when she wakes up quite well-rested and going at top speed gets very interesting. :-p I hope you sleep better tonight! :)

Insomnia is a horrible, horrible thing. But eventually exhaustion will force the issue and sleep will come. Best not to try and push yourself that far though. Don't go looking for sleep. Let sleep come to you.

Anxiety departs and then we sleep Dreams come when relaxation is deep While awake, if we dream more, then indeed We may sleep less, there will be no need.

I battle insomnia some. Last night it was 3:00 a.m. before I could drift off. My mind just keeps whirling sometimes. I've had more nights like that than I would like admit lately.

i do have bouts with insomnia every now and then... but i've come to accept it and instead make good use of my sleepless nights -- such as doing some work at home or reading some interesting things here (like now)

I regularly suffer from insomnia. I seldom sleep before 2 a.m. and if I manage to sleep at a decent hour (say 11:00 p.m.) I am regularly awake by 3:30 or 4:00. Unfortunately, now, I cannot take sedatives or drink to induce sleep. I will have to stick to warm baths, warm milk, or music.

I have been having trouble with getting to sleep myself. This past week I have not been able to get to sleep before 3 am. This morning it was 5 am. This has been the pattern for me since April. I think I have fallen asleep before midnight maybe 4 times since then. I have tried everything but medicine to get over this, but it hasn't worked so far. I usually just end up on my computer until I am finally tired. I guess that once I find a job I may have to fall back on medication to sleep - but I don't look forward to it.

Zayda: the warm bath is a good relaxer. I have heard that, because of paranoia of being murdered, Napoleon drank champaign and took warm baths to relax and rest his body instead of sleeping. Also, I knew a guy once who said he only slept a couple of hours every third night. Wow. I think the average time people spend sleeping is around 8 hours a day, but there are people who sleep more (some 23 hours a day, but that is rare) and some a couple of hours now and then, like the guy I mentioned. I probably average three to four hours a day. If I sleep less one night or two, I usually crash the third night for more that four.

I find that insomnia comes and goes depending on my life situation. I believe that taking a HOT bath for fifteen minutes or even half an hour, and then jumping under the covers before drying will commit me to a good three hours of undisturbed sleep. Most people need a certain number of hours, usually two, to enter a REM cycle, which is what really rests your brain. Doctors are wonderful things if you think you dont get enough. Your brain really needs the sleeping time to organize all the happenings in a day. Your memory of the previous day is better with eight hours of sleep!

I started to have sleeping problems as a teenager. Usually, it was anxiety that would wake me up. Once I had children--actually, from the time I discovered I was pregnant with my first son--I was never to sleep truly sound again. I tend to get only three or four hours a day--the last few days even less. The only time that truly changes for me is if I do not take my thyroid hormone. After a week, I start to wind down. After another week, I want to do nothing but sleep all of the time (and that is the least of the problems I encounter). Thanks for promoting my post. :) ALIENated: I liked your poem.

Do you take naps, or sleep like 10 hours on the weekends? I found that this is what threw me out of whack. Now, I have full days without naps, and I take a full 8 hours (but no more) to sleep. Maybe this will help.

I have insomnia at times. There's nights when I just know I won't be able to sleep until I am practically falling over on the keyboard. Then there's nights when I have to froce myself to go to bed or I won't be able to handle my daughter in the morning. I have actually had to talk myself through going to bed: "Turn off computer monitor, get out of chair, check on baby, turn off light, change clothes, get into bed, close eyes..." I usually end up daydreaming until I fall asleep.

I refuse to talk about insomnia for fear it might conjure up an episode. Wait.....
  • ayinkurie said on Aug 11, 2006....
I used to have it too. No.1, do not take a nap. No.2, Your body and mind must be equally tired. One will hold the other and you can't sleep. Lastly, I found the solution. I just got it few months ago and it worked. It is so called an anti oxidant spray. You just spray like any beauty spray. You will doze off as when as your body ready to rest. All you know, you woke up feeling fresh and hey, its a new life. If you wanna try this spary, let me know. kay :)

i guess if its a recurring insomnia, you need to go to your primary doctor so he can prescribe you something that is not habit forming... or if not, try the dirnking warm milk before sleeping route.. works for a lot of people, unless you're lacto-intolerant... i've had my insomnia for decades and what works for me is turning on the television. i watch a few minutes then i get drowsier and drowsier until i'm lulled to sleep by the sounds from the tv... bad thing though is when i wake up in the morning the tv's still turned on.. but hey, what price to pay for a restful sleep?

I suffered from severe insomnia with a LITERAL no sleep at all. It happened to me more than 5 times. I did everything... drank that hot milk, took a warm bath, read read read!!! watched TV, and I even took tranquilizers, even counted the flock of sheep... to NO EFFECT at all. I was crying tremendously.... and I remember waking up my friend just to share my tears. I would go to work like a ZOmbie!!!!! Thank God I still managed to produced my scripts well. But believe me, it was such a great STRUGGLE!!!! SOmeone advised me to take this supplement, MELATONIN. After a week of intake.... I finally had my well deserved sleep.

  • Ajinia said on Aug 11, 2006....
Sorry ALIENated, I was so busy making everyone hot chocolate that I forgot to warm up your bath - and you dumped your champagne into the bathwater, something about it being the fountain of youth? :)

it's hot to say you're an insomniac. it shows you're "stressed" and "busy" and "complex". i've said i was an insomniac, (and i'm NOT proud of this), when merely, it's because i like to stay up late and go to sleep when day breaks.

I went Hawaii, had fun, came home, and have never re-adjusted to my time zone... I got back in January and it's now August. I am usually up until about 3AM. I finally found a solution... I am working on moving to Hawaii :D Basically I am already living on HI time. I have applied for a position there with the Kapalua Land Co and should know more in the next few weeks..

My doctor says that occasional insomnia is perfectly normal... that doesn't make it any more reasonable... no one likes to loose sleep. Have you tried the "hot milk toddy?" They say it really works... I've never found it usefull, but who knows? maybe it could work for you.
  • ALIENated said on Aug 12, 2006....
fuzzyfeces is right. I am not an insomniac. I just do not sleep that much. I can go to sleep standing up if I decide to. I take catnaps like Lyndon Johnson.
  • carmachu said on Aug 12, 2006....
Sorry friends, no. I can sleep anywhere, any place, and time. Stndaing, sitting, lying on concrete. If I need to sleep, I sleep.
  • paidinblood said on Aug 12, 2006....
I'm only 18 and I have just begun to experience my hours of insomnia this week (exams-student). Oh yeah, and carmachu, I can do all that stuff too, only that I find reading blogs interesting and I woke up only 12 hours ago. :D Does insomnia and anxiety have anything to do with each other? Oh yeah, I hope this won't happen to me any time soon: "I suffered from severe insomnia with a LITERAL no sleep at all. It happened to me more than 5 times. I did everything... drank that hot milk, took a warm bath, read read read!!! watched TV, and I even took tranquilizers, even counted the flock of sheep... to NO EFFECT at all. I know insomnia as an intimate roommate. I would say bedmate, but when I cannot sleep I do not remain abed. It would be silly. I can, by necessity, go for several days with only half hour catnaps occasionally without suffering a dip in performance efficiency.

I don't think it's new. It's old. More people have it these days that's why it's getting the attention. I've been an insomiac since I was thirteen. Forget waking up, I couldn't sleep at all. But I'd be exhausted in the morning -- which coffee would cure me. After about or so of not sleeping properly, I'd go off to sleep properly for about a night or two. But the whole cycle would begin again. I kind of like it now (at 24). It's like an old pal. I get to read and write a lot. Sometimes I can't write until I get insomnia. Then the visiting of ideas, characters and plots begin...
  • suejeff said on Aug 17, 2006....
Definitely the new black silverwhisper. I usually get around 4 hours a night. Occasionally I drop and will then sleep for 8 but that seems to be happening less often. Oh well more reading and writing time I suppose. suejeff
