Ever since I've been on Soulcast, the occasional story or fantasy involving kids would be posted. As a very stern disclaimer was put in the description, I knew enough to avoid it. That stuff is not to my taste, neither do I want to contribute to the writers' click rate.
Now that some folks have zeroed in on this content and have singled out the writers personally, the front pages are littered with pedophilic and incestuous content. Again, they are accompanied with very strict disclaimers so I know to just go read something else.
It seems to me that an "anonymous", free blogsite will have its share of objectionable material. Now that these folks (or this person, who knows) have been provoked, we are seeing even more of their content. I don't know what Soulcast can do technically to prevent it from being posted, or preventing people from creating multiple accounts.
But the next question arises - where does the censorship stop? Why not ban "hate" speech, or racist opinions, or sexist opnions, or political opinions that go against whatever the "majority" thinks? I'm not going to hand out the usual platitudes about freedom of speech. I'm talking about the consequences of pursuing a policy of censorship, however well-intended.
Suppose one of you decides to take up a personal quest to oust me because I'm a Bush-supporting curmudgeon who digs at liberals because just for the fun?
Seems to me that trying to hound people out will result in two possible outcomes:
a) The "offending" party leaves, but the rest of the population will be left wondering if their point of view will next be targeted by these so-called pillars of ethics, law and morality. Or call them self-righteous protective parents. Whatever. People will probably depart for more open pastures.
b) The "offending" party digs his heels in and makes us all miserable by pelting us with even more objectionable content. I'm seriously considering leaving because there's little else but child porn up now and I don't wish to be associated with such a site.
A mild annoyance has now turned into a digital riot. It wasn't a big deal to me before. Now this place seems the filthier for it. Thanks to all of you for your part in it.
