what's your favorite dr seuss story?

in high school, my friend and i did a dramatic reading of green eggs & ham, which was at the time my favorite. nowadays i'm not sure which one is.

how about you? do you have one, or like me do you have trouble picking just one?

I think mine is Fox in Socks. I used to have big chunks of it memorised and did it as a vocal warm-up.  It's full of tongue twisters.

It probably won't surprise you a bit, but I love The Lorax best. :)

I'm a fan of Green Eggs and Ham, but I tend to buy Oh The Places You'll Go for graduation (elementary, high school and college) gifts.  It's timeless for all levels.

For me, the one I like best is a toss up between McElligot's Pool and I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew. Although, I really enjoy Green Eggs and Ham.

Dr. seuss is my all time favorite author!  But if I have to choose, it would be "One Fish Two Fish"  as I enjoyed teaching this to my grandson when he was just over a year old.
  • lfbno7 said on May 09, 2008....
I'm with Kelly on The Sneetches. It's because that's the book that my little kid always used to read when he was a funny little baby instead of the Dracula he grew into. And also in the same book as The Sneetches were Too Many Daves and Those Empty Pants. They are all good. I like everything that Dr. Seuss did.

I love Oh the Place You'll Go, even though I don't remember to many other Dr. Seuss stories, it's still one of my favorite books.

actorguy: o sure, tongue twisters and things that require you to enunciate very clearly--that makes a lot of sense! heh...and here i was thinking actors might use the st. crispin's day speech, or puck's epilogue from midsummer... :D

sis: it's really hard to beat that one, isn't it? :>

infernal: i find that positively shocking! :D

u-i: how very smart! i think that's a fantastic idea--do you mind if i borrow it?

ex: ah yes, those are of course both classics! i'm a big fan of them. :>

super z: honestly, i don't think i'm familiar with your 2 favorites. i shall have to address that really, really soon! as i'm unfamiliar with them, and given your interest in children's lit, i'm curious what draws you to those works. ?

kelly: i can easily see how that one would appeal deeply to you. :>

dee: hey, did you see the film? i'm curious to know what you thought of it--the mrs mean to see it but we missed it in the theaters, sadly.

pickers: cool, another vote for fox in socks--i was wondering if anybody else was gonna list that one. :>

jack: those are both really good, no doubt!

GS: they appeal to me very strongly as well. i love how long his replies get--which was the part my friend read. :>

quietone: ah yes, i'd forgotten about one fish, two fish! and i think it's cool as hell that he's your all-time favorite!

lbf: you know, i can see the sneetches being your favorite. i'm finding it interesting that i think our choices of favorite stories tell us something about ourselves, you know?

np: hey, good to see you again! definitely a good choice, that one. :>

I had a Dr Suess Its Your Birthday Book that I read over and over...... wonder what mom did with that?
  • dancingdiva said on May 11, 2008....
"Sneetches" they were a race of odd yellow creatures who live on a beach, some with a star on stomach, some not, and so it became a basis of discrimination. It is my fav.

As a kid I loved The Cat and the Hat and I'm not sure this is the title The Elephant's faithful one hundred percent. "I said what I meant and I meant what I said, an elephant's faithful one hundred percent".

When I was a nursery teacher on kibbutz, the kids were bi-lingual and they loved the doctor Suess books, (nd the Bear books)to the point that the ones they requested to be read to them became so familiar that I've blocked them out from my conciousness, for no matter how cute, thousands of times is just too much for an adult brain.

  • silverwhisper said on May 11, 2008....
DLS: you know, i don't believe i'm familiar w/ that one--could you tell me about it?

dancingdiva: yep, the sneetches was one i always liked, too. :>

trinov: i don't think i know the second book to which you refer, weird! and yeah, i know what you mean re: too cute after a while. :>

Hi Silver, It was called "Happy Birthday to You"  I found it in the library shelf section (unavailable to buy - now i really wish i knew what mom did with it) of Suessville.  My memory is terrible especially about childhood stuff but, there was a giant parade and all the who hooters and boog buglers or something were marching through the book playing instruments and going to a birthday party for me (the reader).  I think my mom had signed up for a subscription of Suess books but somehow that one was mine.  It may have been a gift from someone ...darn brain - i can't remember.  I know that I once knew Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish, and Hop on Pop by heart. Those seem to also be out of print - I must be old : )

The one I most enjoyed reading to the children I think was Hop on Pop.  Every time I read that particular line the kids would literally Hop on Pop.

By all means you're welcome to use it (the idea).  Sometimes "serious" people need a little silliness to remind them that they have places to go.
  • Wish_Upon_A_Star said on May 12, 2008....
Trinov = Horton Hears a Who is where that line comes from

My favorite is Oh The Places You'll Go - which my grandma gave me a copy of when i graduated from high school.

Another of my favorites is There's a Wocket in my Pocket

Plus i learned how to read from Go, Dog, Go
  • silverwhisper said on May 12, 2008....
DLS: that sounds familiar now that you've described it! man, you wouldn't think dr. seuss books would go out of print, would you?!

soaringraven: heh, i remember hop on pop but even at the age i was when i first had it read to me, i knew that hopping on was a bad idea.

u-i: i personally strive not to be that serious. and thanks! :>

wish: hi, long time no see! thanks for the help with trinov's comment! oddly enough, i'm unfamiliar with there's a wocket in my pocket--i swear i learn more and more every time i post one of these polls!

Hi, wow some people have wonderful memories. I want to thank Wish-and maybe I'll see if I can find a copy somewhere.
  • soaringraven said on May 12, 2008....

Actually the hopping on was mostly my fault.  I encouraged them to hop on pop when ever I read that story.   I tended to become quite animated when reading to the kids myslf so the hopping on thing just seemed a natural thing to do for them.

Story time was my favorite time of the day with the kids.  Of course Edna would get a tad frustrated with me at times because I tended to get them wound up and after story time she was trying to get them to settle down for the night.    Fathers can be so bad!

It seems that I double posted  this.  Please do eliminate this extra bit of nonsense.

  • silverwhisper said on May 13, 2008....
    trinov: good luck finding it!

soaringraven: duplicate taken care of. :> and well, i suppose that stands to reason that the kids would get boisterous then, huh? :>

foreveryoung: yep, i've seen the movie a few times. why so sad?

I love Dr. Seuss to this day, someday when i have a stable place and life i want to get all of his books. There's a Wocket in my Pocket is one the early reader books. My parents taught me to read when i was three and got me a ton of Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein :0 )

Horton Hears a Who is in one of his big collections of stories - the one with the Myrtle the Turtle and The Lorax.

I read so often i memorize half the book :)

hi wish! i think that just about everyone loves dr. seuss--i mean, what's not to love, you know? did you see the film version of horton? my wife wants to see it, but i'm not sure how i feel about it. :>

I read  to my grandaughter yesterday and when I got to Hop on Pop she became so excited.  She didn't even wait until that line came along, she simply, gleefulled hopped on gampa throughout the entire reading.

I lay on the floor on my belly when reading to the kids.  That helps  with the entertainment factor, I think.  And of course it makes it much easier on me when they start hopping on.

I haven't seen the new Horton movie, i kind of want to but just from the previews i can tell they added a lot to the story, which always bothers me....

  • silverwhisper said on May 22, 2008....
well, making 90 minutes of film from a seuss story isn't gonna be very effective--witness grinch.

    ed
  • Wish_Upon_A_Star said on May 22, 2008....
I liked the live action grinch  but it could never compare to the original short cartoon of it or the story itself. Actually all of the Seuss cartoons were pretty awesome, i still remember my little sister and i watching The Lorax over and over again.
Dr. Seuss is timeless, i think, because he has all of these deep messages buried inside inane silliness  coupled with beautiful off beat illustrations which makes it stick.

  • silverwhisper said on May 23, 2008....
    i completely agree, wish. :>
