Hoo boy, it's going to be a long day.  I was doing so well being a good little diabetic and following my food plan.  Today my sugar and salt cravings are really pounding me.  Damn it.

Mimi: Carrot sticks, slices of bell pepper, and celery sticks are really good with guacamole.

Okay, I know you aren't fond of cherries, but what kind of fruit do you like?

Trust me though, I understand the cravings.

You could have nuts: almonds and walnuts are good for you.

My mom's favorite thing when she gets a sweet and salty craving is to eat fresh blueberries and a few toasted almonds. The blueberries have great antioxidants in them and almonds are one of the best nuts for you if you don't over-indulge in them.

Hmmm...let's get your mind off food.

See, he's a tasty treat with no calories and no carbs. A feast for the eyes, ears, and soul!

awe mimi... I hear ya!  You will be surprised at the sugar free things that are available "out there" when you start looking.  I thought I would surely die w/o real candy.....did you get a diabetic cookbook yet?  There are some good recipes in them too.   It will get better and easier, I promise.

I can relate.  I'm not diabetic but the sugar cravings hit like a ton of bricks some times.

I find distraction is the best weapon.  Go get a manicure or pedicure and maybe you'll feel pampered enough to resist the junk food.

I am not diabetic either but I have been binging today and yesterday. I suddenly have all these cravings! Hopefully I've satisfied them already.. jeez thinking about all the calories I've consumed in these couple of days is making me want to go for a loooooooong run! Too bad its almost midnight here.

quiltedone -- I don't have a diabetic cookbook yet.  Any recommendations?

unique -- ah, I see you understand my dilemma.  Distraction works for me too.  That and padlocking the pantry.  ;)

dd -- Have a nice run.  Makes me tired just thinking of it.  :)

Ed -- Why, Mrsilverwhisper, sir, whatever do you mean?  <batting eyelashes innocently>

diva -- ah, another one of us!  I just stayed out of the kitchen until the craving passed.  And surprisingly enough , it did pass.  :)

how about any of these?  To be honest, I have about 3 of them and I don't think I have used a one! LOL

    Oh MissMimi. Me too. lol

    Mimi,
You can have some of those things in moderation.  Here are a few I've found that I add into my meals occasionally.

Cheetos Singles    One individual package has 13 grams of carbs
Doritos and Pringles also have single serving bags in that carb range.

Hershey Sticks        One stick has 6 grams of carbs.

Oatmeal Cookies    I get by with two because of the fiber in them.

Pizza                         I have it sometimes and am ok with 2 slices of a supreme variety.

Brownies                  I'm still working on that one.  :-)

Non-Diet Pop           I think we're stuck on that one.

Of course, we can't have all of those things in the same meal, but if you juggle your carb grams/servings around you can have some of them sometimes.  I find that having just a little bit of the real thing beats the heck out of a substitute.  For me, the cravings just don't go away until I have a little taste.  Then I can go back to being a "good" diabetic too.

By the way, my doctors look at my journal and see what I eat.  They have no complaints with my approach so far.

I know it's hard.  I wish you the best, Mimi.

"Diabetic Friendly" are the two most profit making words in history (probably).

There is no sugar free lunch, or candy for that matter.  We cannot deny the almighty Carb and we shouldn't.  We need to be educated so we properly understand our nutritional needs and learn how our bodies react to carbs.

The biggest fraud going is sugar free candy/chocolate.  Labels, labels, labels -- read, read, read.  The "Total Carb" is to be respected, not the "Sugar  0 grams" because just after that is "Alcohol Sugar  23g (or whatever).  Alcohol sugars count!  There are different kinds of sugars, some natural, some made.  The alcohol sugars generally end in "ol" so beware.

Don't let yourself be fooled by "Diabetic Friendly" instead just send me that money!

Now, I'm off to invent "Diabetic Friendly Panties!"

Soulcasters will get a special rate!

Whole Wheat crust pizzas are lower in carbs than traditional crust pizzas. And they aren't really that bad.
  • CreativeWoman said on May 07, 2008....
I agree about the sugar alcohols.  I found out early on that I'm very sensitive to them.  In fact, they make my blood sugar go up.  I don't eat any of the "sugar free" stuff.  I operate on the notion that a carb is a carb too.

I totally forgot to ask you ...

"Do you love me?  Can you learn to love me?"

I love the stuffin' out of you, Mimi, and that's definitely the highest carb stuffin' in the world. :rose:

  • Mamie said on May 08, 2008....
oops! i fall for all that sugar free stuff...ignore the carb count and am just mindful of the sugar grams number...it is a fluke then that my levels have been okay, coz I think I broke every rule! my new craving is peanut butter! What does that count as?
  • MissMimi said on May 08, 2008....

One tablespoon of peanut butter is a protein serving.  You and me both Mamie.  I love peanut butter.  What I don't get is, peanut butter is a protein, but peanuts are counted as fat.

CDub, you are awesome!  Thank you for all that good info, especially that you eat cheetos!  This is life changing!  :D

skald, it was just one of those days.  Some days, these cravings don't bother me but yesterday they did.  Thanks, skald!

Thanks for the link, quilted done.  ( that is really a contradiction in terms.  Quilting is never done. ;) )

And, MO, I feel like I was way ahead of the game when I first found out about this.  Your advice, support, nagging and humor have been invaluable to me.  Not to mention that you're not always an a$$hole!  :p

I've had Juvenile Diabetes, meaning I am an insulin-controlled Diabetic. As I've gotten older, I've realized it's harder to try and make the best food choices at the right times. I spoke with a Dietitician in my early teens, and instead of following a food group system where everything is counted in Starches, Milks, Proteins, Fruits &Veg, etc., I've converted everything into grams of carbs. I'm on a multi-dosing insulin system. When I'm hungry (and I mean whenever, it doesn't have to be scheduled), I check my blood sugar, calculate the grams of carbs I want to eat and use a sliding scale to figure out my insulin dosage. It results in more shots a day, but WAY more freedom to pig out on those days you want to binge or are just not really all that hungry. And while I try to maintain a healthy balance of foods in my diet, there are some days when pizza, chicken wings and Oreos are just too damn irresistable! Reading the nutrition labels has allowed me to eat almost anything, within reason. This seems to work out very well for me, as in the past few years I've scored the best A1C results I've ever had. I'm not sure if you have adult-onsite diabetes and whether or not you are on insulin or not, but if you are, you may want to consider this type of control system...best thing I ever did. Most people don't even realize I have Diabetes until they see me shoot up!
