Every Sunday when I was a kid was pot roast Sunday. My mother would start the pot roast in the big pan on the stove.. She’d peel the potatoes, carrots and onions. She would add them as the meat started to cook. I can remember smelling that wonderful smell most of the morning and early afternoon we would have our dinner. She would take everything out of the pot and put it in its individual dishes. Then came the art of making the gravy with the juices from the meat, onion, carrot, and potato. It always was so good, thick and creamy. I made sure I always had a little meat and potato with my gravy. I think this was my favorite meal growing up. I always hoped there would be left overs for hot beef sandwiches.. Which of course would include a smothering of gravy!

This was one day I didn’t mind setting the table or doing the dishes.. I looked forward to that meal so much.

During these days and times I often wonder if families have certain meals each day of the week. Do you follow a menu each week that consists of the same meal on a given night?

Do you have meatloaf Friday or leftover Saturday? Or, are you more of a fly by the seat of your pants type preparing what ever sounds good at the time? That is me these days.. But I sure do miss those pot roast Sundays.

I usually try to do a big Sunday dinner, especially in the winter.
It usually consists of a roast chicken or turkey and whatever else I'm in the mood for.
These days it's hard to get everyone to the table at the same time because of the different activities.

No, we never had a "day" picked out for any certain meal--but that sure sounds like a nice memory--pot roast Sundays!  We ate whatever was around for cooking, I guess.  Mostly vegetables and meat if we had it, homemade biscuits and gravy, or cornbread.  Yum Yum!  What's for supper?

I don't cook much myself, anymore.  I just wish I did!  But this is funny, because just the other day I was saying I felt so "European" because I was trying to "decide what I wanted today."  I suppose it brings to mind how lucky I am to be able to say that.

And now I want pot roast!

Growing up it was porkchops, mashed potatos and applesauce. with 5 kids and a factory workers paycheck, that was a big deal for us. what I didnt like was seeing that big pot of beans soaking on the counter, my dad was big on ham and navybean soup and my mom would make gallons. (gack)
    I miss those times.
right now, without any teeth, I am looking forward to be able to chew anything...in a month or so...till then its sip, mash swirl and swallow

quietone thats exactly how I remember mom cooking sunday's pot roast dinner.
She would boil potatoes and cut up carrots and onions and add them to the pot as the meat was cooking. My mother is a great cook she used to make the best fried chicken and spaghetti dinners I have ever had anywhere. Growing up I remember so many different meals that it would be impossible for me to list them all. But sunday dinner's were always special.  As far as things go here now, well have you ever heard of paint by numbers?  I can only hope my sister realizes how lucky she is to have mom living under her roof.     Since this pc is not password protected I better watch what I say or I will be . . .

LOL, yes we've still maintained most of our spending freeze, but this morning I got the go ahead to start spending.  I think it was because he had cheddar hot dogs for dinner and I had cold cereal.

Our list of "approved suppers" evolved from discussions about which meals we both enjoyed.  I would have opted for a larger variety, but he's the pickiest eater I've ever encountered.  Food is not an easy subject for us.

  • quietone said on May 07, 2008....
Cman ~ LOL yes, I would say your sister is lucky to have the "cookie" under her roof.  The rest of our "dinners" weren't all that great being as how we were pretty poor.. Oh, God do you remember the Gov't surplus food in cans??
  • quietone said on May 07, 2008....
ed ~ well if she cooks all those wonderful meals for you, then I hope you help clean up.. !!
  • quietone said on May 07, 2008....
U.I ~ I feel for you on picky eaters.  I am glad I never had to worry about that with anyone I cooked for.  It has to be tough.  I like cold cereal for a meal.. but then, I don't like to cook!
  • CreativeWoman said on May 07, 2008....
Fried chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy and corn was always a special meal my mom fixed.  It didn't always fall on Sunday, but on a night my dad would be home from the road.

When I was in high school, I usually made homemade chicken and dumplings for the Sunday evening meal.  The rest of the family always went to work on the semi.  I had a job and got to stay home, but that also meant I was elected to cook and do the straightening up around the house.  :-)

These days, I don't have a certain dish on any certain day.

CW ~ oh, chicken and dumplings.. yumm!! I havn't had that in ages.  I bet you are a good cook after doing so much when you were younger.

I remember mayo sandwiches LOL.. No wonder I like carbs so much these days! LOL
  • skald said on May 08, 2008....
No it is just the haddock on Mondays and often on Wednesday a meal with haddock, cheese and all kinds of things that I bake in the oven.

You wonderful meal sounds a bit like our meat soup which is boiled in a big pot with, lamb meat, carrots, turnips. either rice or oat meal and it is very good. I don't have it so often but even though I say so my self my people say my meat soup is very good.

By turnip I don't mean those white and red things but the red ad yellow which are bigger I see it is also called a rutabagga and swede.
  • quietone said on May 08, 2008....
skald ~ I think you may mean rudebaga's.  I am not sure if I spelled it right.  LOL  it is like a turnip but not as hard but tastes almost the same.
