52F. Seriously. It's the 5th of May and it's going to get up to 11C/52F. And this will be one of the warmest days we've had so far, I believe. Ooh, tomorrow it's going to hit 59! Shorts time!
There's still snow on the ground, the leftovers of those giant parking-lot snow mountains. Last week I was still wearing light gloves outside, and right now I'm wearing my jacket in the house (the window is open).
I'm not complaining. I like warm sunshine as much as anybody but I'm not exactly heat-tolerant. I always say, when it's cold, you can layer up as much as you need to stay warm. But when it's hot there is a lower limit to "naked"!
It's just an odd thing to think about for most people, which makes it a fun thing to mention in a blog.
It will get hot here. Usually temperatures in the 75-85 range in summer (well "hot" is a relative term, I suppose.) Last year we had a heat wave of 95. Some of you are laughing right now, and some of you are jealous. Probably both. Just remember all those -20s we get during the winter and you'll feel better, I promise.
But in all honesty, those numbers are a lot hotter than they look because all except the most recent buildings here aren't built for hot weather. There's no A/C in our building, for example, and the windows aren't even designed to hold a window unit - we have to jimmy it in there and stick a can of beans underneath so it stays up. A lot of apartment buildings don't have windows suitable for an A/C. Older homes don't have central air. Forget ceiling fans! There's not a lot of thought given in the architecture here to things like exposures or circulation. So when it gets hot, we're just not equipped to deal with it. When it was 95 outside last year, it was 85 inside our apartment, with our window A/C on and three different fans. Ugh.
But we can dig out of a blizzard in a matter of hours!
