It's not easy being a gay pop star
The music industry may be growing more tolerant of "different" artists, but they're still not ready for Ari Gold—a performer both proudly Jewish and openly gay.

It's not easy being a gay pop star

I’m having a blast being a full time "Homofessional Gaylebrity." When I first started, everyone told me I couldn’t do it. Gay people, straight people, friends, family, music industry professionals, all said to me, “Why do you have to make being gay an issue? It should be about the music.” But its not just about the music. All the great music I can think of has been inspired by political and social issues. The great artists write to change the world. So I set out to do just that.

I can only imagine what it must be like to be gay in today's world.  I thought it would be more acceptable by now, but it seems to be just as controversial as ever.

What difference does his sexuality make?  Either he has musical talent or he doesn't.  Stuff like this is ridiculous.  Unless you are dating or sleeping with this guy, his sexuality is irrelevant.

As you know, I have been a gay activist for all my adult life, and you like others I am in constant touch with suffer at times from small mindedness from people.

This is only a problem in America. Last year's Australia's Idol (yes, we have it too) was openly gay and there was not one single objection from anywhere or anyone. He has become successful as much as any Idol winner has. He came out on TV to the nation and I admired him for doing so. Guys or girls like that pave the way for others and help to desensitize the public to people who happen to be different sexually. Be bold and defy those bigoted forces or gay people will stay under the thumb forever and fuck that for a joke! There are other countries who want talent and are not so squeemish. You may only make millions instead of billions but since money is irrelevant in what makes a person truly happy I would be happy to settle for less. Being out and free and without fear is worth a fortune if happiness could be bought. Personally I have never cared one iota whether people did not like that I was gay; it's their problem - their hangup and I can't feel lousy for them all my life. Either they sort it out or they can drop dead. That has been my way since I was 19 waaaay back in 1972. It was even harder then and I just did not give a damn. America needs to kick the christian right in the ass and tell them to mind their own business. Those people are quite mad and should be told that Jesus adored gay people. He used to go clubbing at the local gay inn every sunday evening (Saturday being the sabbath). Oh... and to answer Saturnalia - yes all male dancers are gay... well, most of them. The others are gay curious or gay wannabes. I am a dancer wannabe.... hehe. You get to dance with so many hot guys!!

    carefully, yeah me too.

    whish, yeah, it should be.

    cry, yeah, i know.

    juan, thank god for that.

    duke, you will never know.

Pieter, i am in a committed relationship, so i wouldn't know about that part of it. i never went out cruising the bar scene. i just would get to know people, and gay people know other gay people, but i never felt comfortable till i found my life partner.

i think that a person's sexuality is too damned important to be an issue that remains in the closet. and you're absolutely right about what drives music, if you ask me. i've always felt that music, like any form of creative expression, is of two parts: inspiration, whatever gives rise to the music; and performance.

sexuality is important--it's on that basis that american social conservatives have chosen to seek to deny a fundamental civil liberty of their fellow americans. it's utterly stupid--and telling, in my view.

Whatever our individual plight may be I often think of gay men and women in countries like Iran where their existence is officially denied until they catch you at it and then promptly hang you up by your neck to remind you they don't like you and that are being very very bad. If after a period of time you are still alive you are beaten until you promise to never touch anyone else's pink bits again. If you can't assure them of that then they make sure by cutting off your hands and your pink bits so it cannot happen again. After all that they encourage you to kill yourself because of the shame in being such a vile and oddly mutilated wretch. A noise or vague motion is believed to mean you agree to die and to be helpful they hang you again before separating your head from your body with a blunt rusty pocket-knife. To be fair to decent folk they leave your carcass out in the open for the vultures - who need to eat after all and who are they to deny the birdies a meal; despite of the tainted nature of your perverted corpse.

So.... things can always be worse in far and exotic lands where pop music is probably discouraged because it might make you want to kiss members of your own gender (on the mouth that is - with the tongue and stuff). They suggest the West is crawling with these type because all our music is the work of the Devil. I shall assume the Devil is also gay..... or bisexual at least. Allah is meant to approve of all this and his alterego - God, also approved until recently. I feel as free as a bird..... don't you? Coming out can't be as bad as living in Iran and no negative reaction from anyone as depressing.

And to DancingDiva - I have been in a relationship since I was 21 and I am a very old fat fart now (55 yrs) and we still live together. We had an open relationship and enjoyed a little variation occasionally. Of course most of that was before the terror of AIDS. "Missed me by THAT much!!" (Many I knew weren't and died)

Between AIDS and hanging we face adversity constantly. I have very few fears left. End of Rave. (it's the medication you know........) Piet.
