I'm really klutzy, but I rarely ever actually fall down or anything. I have a friend who does that all the time. He probably falls down at least once a week, and there's nothing wrong with him. He's just that clumsy!

I did manage to take a good spill down a few concrete steps today though. We were all heading for the park (the baby, little one, MIL, and me -- DH left at the same time, but he was going to work). He and little one had cleared the steps, MIL was behind me, and I had linebacker baby.

Suddenly, my left ankle just decided, "Not today, Tubby!" and gave out completely. It was like it just completely turned to jello or something, and down the steps I fell.

Being klutzy means you develop really fast reflexes (the better to catch falling objects that slipped out of your butterfingers with), so I automatically twisted to the side. I felt horrible for doing it, because I saw her there, but I shot my left arm out to catch myself, which sent little one sprawling to the ground (she got a few scratches and started to cry). My hand and leg took the first impact, then I pulled my arm right out from under me to help steady linebacker baby so his head didn't hit the ground, since if I'm almost upside down, so is he in my arms). So I took a secondary jolt on my shoulder and the side of my head.

I didn't even realize I was hurt at first because little one was crying, and all I wanted was to see how she was. When I was sure she just had a scrape, I got up with the still-startled baby and started to head to the car, and then I realized my leg was killing me. I pulled up my pants leg to see what was going on, because I'd have sworn I was fine.

I've got a super-nasty scrape on my lower shin and knee, and a dark crescent of bruising on my knee and upper shin. And the leg is stiff and sore now, so I'll be taking a hot bath later. DH ran back inside for an ice pack (I rolled my eyes, but I'm glad he did now, because it had started swelling a little). It lasted all day with negligible pain, so I'm not too bummed that I'm sore now.

BUT...little one is fine and linebacker baby escaped without a scratch. And really, that's a win for a klutz like me, considering he was in my arms. That's the second time I've fallen with him, and the first time was equally fortunate. :) Hopefully this was the last! :-p

We had an awesome day. Our little morning mishap didn't slow us down at all! :)

Wow!  I'm glad everyone is okay.  It sounds like you're gonna have some pretty wild colors in that bruise.

Youch!  I cringed reading this post of yours...

I'm glad everyone's fine.  It could have been much worse, you know?

Be careful out there...  [sheepish hug]

OUCH!  I am so sorry to hear that you fell, Infernal, but thank goodness the babies weren't hurt, although with a name like Linebacker, I wonder if he is used to being body tackled!

You are probably better off with ice for the next 2 days or so, rather than the hot shower, because it is an acute injury, even though you feel stiff.  Sometimes, heat can exacerbate a bruise.

I hope you feel better really soon!

That's horrible. I'm glad the baby didn't get hurt. But ouch, for you! That sounds like a nasty fall. And poor little one getting tossed over. I'm glad no one was hurt worse.

You better be careful walking next time. First Kyle smashes his head on a cabinet, and now you're falling down on your head. What am I going to do with you two?

u-i: Yep, I'm going to have a rainbow in the next few days, I think! Good thing I always wear long pants!

Grape: Aww, thanks. ((hugs)) You're right. It could have been worse. I'm glad I don't have my mom's thin bones.

wish: That's good advice - thanks. I wanted to soak, but if it's going to make it worse, never mind! Linebacker baby got his name because I got so huge with him and he was so active that we figured I had a future football player in there. ;-)

Jaxl: I felt soooo guilty that I knocked little one down! That was worse for me than falling by far. Stupid ankle. :-p

As for what to do with us, well, since you can't whap us with a no-more-klutz wand, I suggest loving us anyway and hoping for no more accidents for a while!

Oh my gosh!  I would've been so scared.  Thank god for mommy instincts (and for the noble sacrifices of a certain little sister *giggle* )

Yep, ice for the first 24 hours after the injury, keeps blood away from the area so keeps the swelling down.  At 24 hours it's done most of the swelling it's going to do, so at that point you can switch to heat to bring more blood to the area, to heal the injuries and carry away the dead blood cells that are making the bruise.

Poor you, though, I hope you feel better!  And I hope Holly forgives you soon ;)

It's bad enough to fall down, but with the baby in your arms, I imagine that was even scarier! I'm glad that you guys weren't hurt that bad. The baby had an interesting ride, that's for sure! And I'm glad your daughter was alright too. What a scene! You better put your leg up and relax a little.

You ever shove a miniature model of the Statue of Liberty up your nose? You ever staple your lips together? I hate when that happens.

Sorry you hurt your self. It is not the best thing to twist once ankle. I am glad the children are O.K

oh wow!!! thank goodness it not that serious... but be careful enxt time okay??? =)

Hey, please be more careful...! (As if you needed reminding... :-)

I pride myself as being nearly accident-proof. But having a very active lifestyle, I've suffered quite a few nasty falls too. The latest was a few minutes before I took that photo of my bare feet on river boulders (posted in my recent blog). I was holding my own "baby" (the camera, still inside its case) and negotiating a particularly difficult part of the river with very slippery stones, when I took a wrong step and fell into the water. I had wanted to dunk myself into the river, but not that way. Luckily, my right hand with the cam kept above the water all the time, and I suffered only a minor arm scrape. It could have been worse, too...

I had another accident on the trip back, while I helped the driver change a flat tire along a terribly hot highway. But that's for a separate blog... :-)

Hi, I'm sorry to hear of your fall. Things like that happen to me because I inherited by mother's 'double-jointedness'. Did you ever hear of such a concept? It means that you tend to sprain your ankles a lot, especially in cold weather.

Did you ever hear of 'arnica'? It is available as an herb and as a homeopathic cream and pill, and it is the only thing that I ever encountered that can 'cancel' a swelling and actually heal a very bad sprain within a day, to the point that you forget all about it.

When I was growing up my parents called me a 'klutz' and made me feel guilty about falling and dropping things. I've come to understand that this is just like any other form of brain problem, like my being dyslexic in reading or not being able to remember right from left quickly. Names like 'klutz' should be erased from the language and certainly not glued unto children. When I take into consideration my problems in space and time I can function quite well, but guilt used to get in the way. Don't feel guilty, this is a minor disablity that needs to be recognized and then compensated for.

I have a history of klutziness so you have my sympathy. I'm very glad the linebacker baby & little one were unscathed and sorry to hear that you are not. =( Hope the bath helps ease the pain.

Owwiieee!  You poor thing!  I do feel for you.  About 5 weeks ago I fell down the stairs at my friend's house whilst holding Tigger on my hip.  I did not let him go at all and kept him upright.  Then about a week ago I slipped in the passage way at work and felt right on my butt.  When I was little I tended to be a bit clumsy and I think I am going through a clumsy stage yet again!!!  I got my middle finger caught in the hole punch on Friday :(

Glad you all survived that horrible fall.  Hope you're on the mend, dear Infernal :-)

holy cats, infernal, you're lucky that your ankle wasn't damaged and of course i'm glad that lb baby wasn't hurt! any idea what happened with your ankle, though, b/c that's a mighty peculiar experience, wouldn't you say? you don't have a history of your major joints suddenly going on strike or anything, do you?

i am glad it wasn't any worse than that.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on May 05, 2008....
Hey again, guys. :) You'll be glad to know that I've pretty much been pain-free since the morning after, and other than some impressive bruising and that nasty-looking scrape, I think I'm all better. Thanks for all the comments. :)

It seems I'm not the only klutz around here, for sure!

moon: I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself worse when you took your unexpected dunk!

Trinov: I am somewhat double-jointed (not to the degree I've seen in others). My elbows can do freaky things, and maybe my ankle is that way, too? Thank you for telling me about arnica. I hadn't heard of it, but maybe it would be good to keep on hand! And I agree that sometimes parents (or other adults) stick children with harmful labels.

polar: I'm sorry you've been falling too! ((hugs)) Good job keeping Tigger in your arms and ok while you fell!

ed: I don't have a history of my joints going out on me, though my knees have done it a time or two. Nothing to really set a pattern, and I've never had so much as a sprain or hairline fracture, so I guess I'm doing alright! ;-)

Angelangel: Welcome to my blog. :)
