  I'm not sure exactly why, but where I live you're more likely to get "the finger" even if you don't do something stupid on the road.
   
  I try to be a courteous driver.  I try to extend the courtesy to my fellow drivers.  I use my signals, wave thank yous, don't take it personal when someone doesn't do those things, etc.
   
  I do, however, occaisionally get cut off enough that something snaps and I become one of the people who uses "the finger".

  we call that "merging" in jersey......it's quite a complex concept for some drivers to grasp.....

  I live in a country where the driving could not be worse. So the other day I took my cousin to get her learner's, and I ended up waiting for hours next to this elderly woman. We were talking about rude drivers, and she says she always sets herself a goal to be nice to, and let in at least 10 people when she is on the road. So instead of getting an attack of road rage, she ends up feeling really good about herself. I have been trying it, and when you are actively trying to be nice, instead of fuming at every infraction, it is a lot easier. But then there's always that one minivan that does something outrageous, and I'm back to square one again :)
