so the mrs and i are meeting some of my coworkers tonight after hours at a local watering hole/restaurant. that should be fun. :>

tomorrow, we're planning on a geek-out: a nearby museum's got an exhibit that's kinda interesting to us, maybe a visit to a local restaurant that intrigues us. haven't been to that area in a while now and i think we're overdue.

then comes sunday. do you remember the database project i started back in december, that i figured would take a few weeks or so? yeah, turns out that after my last e-mail almost 2 weeks ago, it turns out that there's still a problem. i have no idea how this can be happening, and hence no idea how in the world i can address it. i guess he figures that's why it's OK to pay in installments--the last of which was almost 2 months ago now. he's got a lot going on--he and his wife are expecting their first kid, so i'm sympathetic--but c'mon, the entire damned business doesn't revolve around just him, either.

it isn't appropriate for me to ask him about payment until this bug is fixed, so i guess that i'd better get my butt in gear sunday and do this thing. so i get to spend sunday diving back into MS access and trying to figure out why this bug is recurring. once i've done that, i hope that fixing it won't take that long.

so that's gonna my weekend...how's yours shaping up?

    Happy Friday, ed! :)

And ugh on the database. I hope you can figure out wth is going on with it and fix it without too much frustration (and that payment starts flowing again ASAP!).

Oh yeah...and our weekend is, uh, doing whatever MIL wants to do. Whatever it is should be fun! I think we might go to the lake for the day on Sunday, if it doesn't do the t-storm thing, anyway.

If the bug is caused by something other than your work you need to point it out to him.  Business is business.  If it is your error fix it and ask for payment in full.  Sounds a little blunt, but if you don't end this project you will be tweaking it for months.

Would rather it be game, but too much going on with our group.

    Hi, ed!

I actually had today off and I went to the Zoo as a chaperon with my oldest son's high school class. We had a pretty good time and I learned a lot about sea otters.

I was kinda uncomfortable at first because I don't really like kids or strangers, but I loosened up after awhile. The group that I was with were pretty smart and funny. My faith in the future was reinforced, a little bit.

I'm trying to get the bugs out of a application running on a db2 database and I'm not allowed access nor admin tools.. nor a configuration management plan... Being able to fix it yourself sounds pretty good...

My weekend? What weekend? Oh. It's a Saturday here now. I lost track of time, struggling to finish all my end-April deadlines hahaha.

Good luck on finding that bug and getting fully paid. The last db project I took on kept knocking on my door a year after I submitted the final build. And it wasn't bugs either, just requests for minor feature tweaks and documentation to help them train their db operators. And I couldn't refuse because the company was owned by my friends, the pay was good, and I liberally interpreted the meaning of post-sales service. But after that I swore off db work for the next thousand years.

I'm going to a Relay For Life dance on Saturday.  Same old, same old otherwise.

I hope you find the bug and squish it.  :-)

I remember when I used to do bug-searching, when I took a computer class at NYU. It was so long ago, it was in Cobol. What a clunky language that is. You have to plan out every single move and assign space to it, before you start. I remember the index cards that got punched.

My weekend includes a Saturday in Manhattan with my wife and my best friend Joe and his two little daughters. We'll meet by Chevy's on 42nd Street and 8th Ave, and pick a restaurant, and then probably walk to Central Park.

Well Ed. I only wrote a post yesterday but did not look at  bloggs because I did not have more time and I was bushed anyway. But have a good Saturday and Sunday.

infernal: happy saturday, infernal! yeah, that frigging db...[grumble] i'm really glad you get along so well w/ your MIL--that's truly wonderful! :>

u-i: i've already been tweaking it for months, truth be told. and figuring out precisely how that bug is happening is gonna be interesting. once i've got the bug fixed though, i will indeed by demanding payment in full. or at least interest!

unassuming: always good to see you again! sorry to hear about your forecast--verily, that doth suck! i'm sure your schedule will ease up some time during which you can game again--i just hope it's soon. :>

    quietone: um...?!

diabolic: o, i very much intend to do just that! :D

TS: you're a brave, brave man--but then again, you're a marine. :> sea otters? dude, that's practically my totem animal--cool! and i'm glad your faith in the future was strengthened--those moments are beautiful ones, aren't they?

super z: ugh ugh ugh...my sympathies, my friend. i just hope you don't work yourself sick in the process--it would truly be teh suxx04 if you finally turned in your grades, only to spend the next few days in bed!

DLS: you're trying to fix the app but have no admin rights on the db?! holy crap but that's completely insane! is there at least a power user account they'll grant you access to? sheesh, my sympathies! my app is just a small MS access file--which makes the headache all the more irritating for its ignominy, you know?

moon: i was hoping you might weigh in, given your experiences. seriously, i will never again offer to do db contract work. ever. and if the idea so much as crosses my mind, i am hereby charging you with hunting me down and shooting me in the head. right between the eyes, damn it!

queen: hey, boring is sometimes good, you know... :>

CW: sorry, relay for life? i imagine you've got a blog entry about it that i haven't seen yet so i hope to get there soon. and thanks! :>

lbf: that sounds like a good way to spend the day--manhattan can be a great place indeed! i'm kinda hoping you'll try a restaurant that's new to you--i rather miss your restaurant reviews, truth be told. :>

bluegum: 14x7m? that's huge! sheesh, what's he putting in that workshop?! i hope you have good weather for your work tomorrow, and thanks! :>

skald: as you can see, i'm still trying to catch up myself! i'd say "enjoy your weekend" but you always seem to do just that. :>

ed -- Lol. I know, I know... a db contract work is worse than suicide. But you know, sometimes we geeks have a weird masochist streak. After a while, and beyond all logic and past experience, we do it again. Why? Simply because, like a mountain summit, "it's there."

No, my friend, I don't need to hunt you down and shoot you. Because if you do a similar contract again, you would have signed your own death sentence anyway haha.

bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! very, very good point, moon.

jeez, it's been ages since i've been on SC at the same time as someone else!

    Ed,
I am so predictable.  :-)  Relay For Life is a fundraiser for cancer.  I wrote about it here.

    ig·no·min·y
–noun, plural -min·ies for 2. 1. disgrace; dishonor; public contempt.
    2. shameful or dishonorable quality or conduct or an instance of this
Sorry I had to go look it up.  I'm an administrator on the web application and the business analyst/project cooridinator or what ever my boss calls me in the next email.  So I discover the business process, help write the requirements, test the application, implement, train, and troubleshoot.  [hey that almost sounds impressive could i use in my resume?]
You've built a custom application for someone.  Its unique for that individual.  I don't think any client could expect every action to work perfectly in every situation.  Its your response and attitude that is the selling point. And its perfectly reasonable to ask for a portion of payment, leaving the buyer with the last bit witheld until satisifaction of both parties is reached.  After that point a maintenance contract should be negotiated - define how upgrades, or enhancements may be handled
Now honestly i haven't read any of the posts about this database (sorry) Is it really going all that bad?

CW: nah, it isn't that you're predictable, just that it wouldn't make any sense for you to speak of something w/out enlarging on it in your comment--or posting a blog about it. :> thanks for the link but i just opened the comments here right after posting to that blog entry. :>

DLS: it isn't that bad, it's just that i need to be more disciplined about scope creep. this bug is a legitimate issue that i need to address, though. sorry, former english major, i have a tendency it seems to make use of some of those standardized-test vocabulary words. :> there's not supposed to be a maintenance segment of this arrangement: it's intended to be a one-off. when i started, i wasn't working so i could devote whole days to this at a stretch. but now...
