Ever seen the old movie Catwomen of The Moon? How about Queen of Outer Space?
These old science fiction-type movies portray civilizations where there are NO MEN...only women.

But is this really just the stuff of fantasy?

Not according to many genetic scientists.

Remember I was telling you the other day that i was watching Nightline?  Well this was the lead story that night........and i've been thinking about it ever since-

Imagine?

No men?

I don't know about you all, but I really like men.

I can't even imagine a world without them.......a world of only women.

But the scientists say it's inevitable....

No, not tomorrow, or in 20 years, but the prediction is, in about 100-125 thousand years, men will be no more.....

Why?

It's because of the Y chromosome; that thing that makes babies into boys, and is passed from father to son.  You see, the Y chromosone cannot repair itself.  It's smaller than any other chromosome, and much smaller than the X chromosome.  Scientists say that the vast majority of this little chromosome's genetic coding is redundant......and riddled with mutations....300 million years ago, the Y chromosome contained about 1500 genes....the current version only contains about 5% of that number.....It is from this rate of decay that scientists theorize the eventual extinction of men....

They point to lots of indicators-  the most popular being decreased fertility counts-  Over the past 50 years alone, the sperm counts of the average male have decreased a whopping 20%....This is blamed on free radicals which the Y chromosome is especially vulnerable to....

And they point to population numbers...according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the ratio of male-to-female births has substantially dropped in the US and Japan....yielding about 250,000 fewer boys than would have been born had the sex ration circa 1970 had endured....

So how will women survive without them????

Guess what?  Scientists say the ability for women to survive without men is only about 20 years away!!!!  That it's already been been done with mice....

How?

Through an asexual reproductive process called parthenogenesis.

This is where the female both creates the egg and fertilizes it without sperm.  Of course the result would always be a female....

Some honeybees, kimodo dragons, and hammerhead sharks already reproduce naturally by parthenogenesis.....

And that's where scientists believe humans are headed too-  reproductively speaking.

I don't know about you, but I find all of this a bit disturbing-
I'm kinda glad I won't be around in 150 thousand years.......

I think i will have to reconsider complaining about the fact that my husband doesn't pick up his own socks, or mow the lawn as often as I like.......hmmmmm i might even have to think about that honey-do list that causes so much churn in our household...

Maybe we should all just enjoy them while we can......

I like men...I think I could live without them for a day or even a week but, I wouldn't want a world without them.  This makes sense to me though...I can see this happening. Which is a bit scary considering when we usually discuss extinction...it usually doesn't pertain to the human race. Well, unless we are discussing World War III....then you hear about the end of the world.

The other side of this is kind of cool to consider though. Women being the only gender in the world. I wonder how this might link into sexuality. I don't think we would stop being sexual creatures...so do you think the increase in Lesbian and Bi-sexual females is an evolutionary thing?

i like men.most my best freinds have been male's.how can we reverse it and get rid of women, just not me......i want sonny,jason,robi,brad,.........nevermind.what's up secret???i'm home now......

The theory seems sound.  Hmmm, a world without men.  I suppose that would finally solve the problem of how the toilet seat is left.
  • quietone said on May 01, 2008....
LOL Uniquely!!  I think the female would stop being sexual creatures would be my guess.. (well some men  would say some women are already ahead of their time on that! )
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 01, 2008....
Nah!!  there are plenty of acceptable substitutes (toys) that I think sex will always be a part of our lives.  Sex is too fun to forget, even if it's no longer for procreation.

I am coming down hard on the side of enjoying men while you can. My sperm looks just fine to me. I might need to conduct my own tests on this sperm count thing.

The only way I know to do this accurately is through tasting, for this I'll need female sperm tasters. Probably about 10, maybe more, but let's say ten, to get this started. Of course you'll have to move to Montana and be available at a moment's notice. Sign up sheet below.

  • diabolicdame said on May 01, 2008....
I have read about that and I don't really agree with the theory. I mean from what I have studied, the Y chromosome having become compact is a defense mechanism actually because the X chromosome sort of attacks it. I mean the baby is formed by default female and then the Y chromosome kicks in and turns it into male and the X chromosome tries to resist that. That seems to be why Y chromosome needs to be compact so there is less vulnerability and it can do its job quicker.
But if this theory turns out to be correct then that would be rather interesting! And if women started reproducing female babies on their own then no more sex.
Actually that sounds like a rather boring world!! And if it was full of women then I'm sure it would be a rather bitchy world too!!   ;-)

    LOL at quilted one's comment.

Sometimes I think a world without men wouldn't be all bad.  But they are useful for moving furniture and opening jars of spaghetti sauce.  Let me think about it some more.

vacant:  i can't even imagine how sexuality would change.....i don't think we'd be any less sexual as creatures go....but certainly very different.  i'm guessing many would opt for same-sex relationships.....but i betcha there would be many and various inventive options around....

kill: haha......some of my best friends are men too....wouldn't want to live without them!

ui:  lol...yeah, that toilet seat thing would be over!   i wonder if there would ever be another war?

quiet: c'mon.....i don't think we'll ever stop being sexual....
but lol @ being ahead of your time!  and quit that nose picking already!!!!!

OMG - between Mobil's comments and Lucy's cryogenics lab, I am LMAO and had to close the door to my office.

Lucy - do we have to freeze the whole thing, or just the parts we like best?

And Mobs - I am all for preservation of the species, but you are on your own with the lab tests.
  • bluegum said on May 01, 2008....
i would think if this came about women would lose the sex drive part too as there is no need for it imo they would have babies when they should ,work without complaints, forget about their looks, eat only good food not whats good for them and sleep in a little capsul all on there own.he he he rofl.

I wonder if there will even be a planet then, but I understand the theory.  It reminds me of Jurasic Park when the dinosaurs did just that in the movie.  "Nature found a way" was the comment.  I'd hate to be around for a world with no men.  Who would I have to berate and aggravate?
  • Lucytorial said on May 01, 2008....
exactly wombat, women bitching to women doesn't work.... but men take it and grin and bear it.
  • wombat said on May 01, 2008....
(Lucy)  I don't know about "grinning" but they usually have to bear it!)
  • Lucytorial said on May 01, 2008....
I suppose its more a roll of the eyes and sneer isn't it..... no I'm glad men are around for more than this reason alone, we need men, men need us or how will they find their way around the city!
  • hotaka said on May 01, 2008....
This would lead to a series of problems then. The world would be all catty and bitchy. But maybe with no men to preen for and compete for, women might be nicer to each other.

There was a Sliders episode (remember that show?) where the heros went to an Earth where 98% of the male population had died out because of a disease. Surviving men were kept in institutions where they were fed, educated, exercised and mated with females about four times a day. In a way it might have seemed ideal for guys, but one man was in hiding because he didn't want to mate with anyone else except his wife. And basically, men were like pets or prisoners. They had no freedom. They could only stick to their assigned routine.

Also, the male and female brains are different. I don't want to sound sexist but even in today's world where women can work in technological development fields and other science related areas there are still many more men developing theories and inventing things. I think it might be partly due to the fact that most men can focus on one thing for a long time and forget about everything else (much to the annoyance of their wives) whereas women's brains are more geared for managing several tasks at once. I blame it on evolution. Men had to concentrate on hunting animals while women had to do just about everything else. Evolution is slower to change than societies. Well, it's a long and complicated argument with many factors and I am sure I still come off sounding sexist so I'll stop now.

In any case, I am here now and I have a son coming. I am doing my part to keep the male population going.

OMG! What are teenage girls going to do when there are no more boy bands to scream about?!

    Hey Secret,

Did you ever read "The left hand of Darkness" by Ursala Leguin?   It about a planet with no men, sort of : )  Peace and Long Life

    Love Worf

  • hotaka said on May 01, 2008....
But then again, women might develop societies like the Bene Gesserit in Dune, where women play key roles in the political development of the human universe. Without men around, women might actually assume male roles and have more female resources available for science and technology. We know women are as clever as men, just few of them apply their abilities in the same way as men (just as very few men apply their abilites in the same way as women).

So, would that mean that the clitoris would devolve and become useless like the apendix? It wouldn't serve any reproductive purpose anymore, would it? I guess vibrator sales would not increase in the end anyway.
  • Lucytorial said on May 01, 2008....

I have heard that girl babies are routinely aborted in China in favor of boys. Now
there is a huge glut of men. They have to travel to other countries to find a bride.
In light of all that, I am more inclined to think that the future is more Chinese
than female. And, them killing us with lead poison, etc., is hastening the process
as well. The bottom line, it is much better to live in the present than in the
future, ... or in the past. There is no time like the present no matter how you
    look at it.

    i completely understand!

mobil:  anything in the name of science i see....lol!  what a noble fellow you are.

showing: hi and welcome to my blog.

lucy:  you had me lmao this morning.....i love your idea! hopefully whoever's around when the day draws near will freeze a few for posterity!

i wonder if the museums will have men exhibits?  i mean they put dinosaur bones in museums for us to see, right???

wish:  it's fun to come into a post and find people sharing laughs, isn't it?  it's the thing i enjoy most here.....
lucy is a wild woman, but i'm with her on the idea of perserving the whole thing as opposed to parts.....i mean how could you explain just those parts to anyone and have it make any sense? LOL

blue: i dunno about losing the sex drive....i'm not sure a woman's sex drive would disappear.  i just think there would have to be new and improved ways to satisfy it.

    mmi:  *smiles*  ...i'm with ya!

wombat: LOL exactly!  who could we blame?  And who would open mimi's jars and kill her spiders?

    it baffles the mind...

hotaka:  you crack me up........so serious.....i could see the wheels clicking away in your mind as i read......i guess if this were really to happen, the scenario you shared wouldn't be so hard to believe, huh?  because before extinction becomes endangered......and as soon as everyone realized that men were an endangered species, i'm sure lots of things would be put into place to try to save and conserve what's left.    i remember reading The Handmaid's Tale, which explored a world where widespread infertitlity led to controlled reproduction....it was still women in that novel, but i don't think the scenario is too far fetched to happen to either sex should something happen that endangers the continuation of the species...

the interesting part of this story for me was the notion of asexual reproduction being something possible in the very near future.....the implications of that make my head explode!

Worf: no, I never read that book-  but it sounds like something i'd like to read, so thanks for mentioning it....

A world without men?  What a nightmare!  Speaking as a woman, I must say that with the exception of a few, I hate women.  I think that the ones that are high-maintenance, catty, and afraid of a little dirt or manual labour give our sex a bad image.  You know the ones....with the nail tips, fake tans, big hair who scream and "air-kiss" when they run into their friends.  The ones who refuse to pump gas or put the garbage out.  They are just ridiculous and give women an image of being weak and superficial.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a girly girl, but I'm not a "girly girly girl"...LOL if that makes any sense.  I love men.  I work in a male dominated field because I love men.  Most of my friends are men.  I love the attention men give me.  There's nothing like the affection a big strong manly man give you.  Mmm...getting all warm and fuzzy just thinking of it.

I think if the world was restricted to only women, then women as we know them would change.  I think they would classify themselves into different genres...separated by who they are and what they can accomplish.  All of our "traditional male jobs" would have to be performed by women.  Iron workers would still have to construct skyscrapers, roads still have to be paved, electrical lines still have to be maintained, wars need to be fought.  I think new "sexes" would be created out of sheer neccessity.

Ladies! They do exist! I swear it! The perfect man is revealed inside this post. Men should strive to be like him and all women should look for a man like him......
I used to be a person that was easily aroused like an animal. After losing my virginity finally at 16 and time progressing I have nothing left. One thing is what comes attached to the whole lust thing. A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT!!!! I got a world full of it...
Fears and other stuff...
I have alot of bad memories. I would love to zap them out of my head. If there were a way to banish them, it would almost seem as a blessing at first. The only thing is that I would be repeating mistakes with people over and over again like a jackass....
