As the month of March came to a close the Japanese government faced a serious situation. A law that permited the government to charge a tax of about 30 yen per litre expired at the end of the month and nothing had been done about renewing it. The story was one of the top headlines for nearly two weeks - possibly longer.

So on April 1st, the average price of gas, which was about 155 yen per litre ($1.55 basically) suddenly plummeted to 128 yen! And for a whole month people enjoyed filling up for the same price as they had a year ago. (I don't have a car so I never benefited).

But now the good times are coming to an end. The bill has been passed that will put the law back in effect as of May 1st. Gas prices are expected to jump up to 160 yen/litre. I guess I am taking the train to the mountains...

Last night cars were lined up for a block outside every gas station it seemed. At midnight the price went from 124 yen/litre to 157yen/litre. The first guy in to fill up at the new higher price after waiting in line for 40 minutes was not impressed, but he needed the fuel.

Say, what's up with all that oil in Russia, the Northern Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico, Alberta... Can't we start using that stuff or did the Arabs buy all that up?

The price of gas angers me. It angers me that our government taxes it at all. Why must the government have its hand in every damn thing.

It angers me that we allow OPEC to have its monopoly unchallenged when we are supposedly a nation that believes in a free market economy, not in a price-fixed monopoly. It angers me that our own oil companies don't compete with each other on price either, yet another price-fixing situation. It angers me that oil sheikhs build ice castles in the sand with our money.

It angers me that our government doesn't do a damn thing about it and doesn't even talk about doing a damn thing about it.

It angers me that our president has so many oil buddies and used to own an oil co. himself. It angers me that oil interests are making money in Iraq, and that this seems to be the only thing going on in Iraq and the whole purpose of the war.

It angers me that people here on Soulcast defend the high price of gas and the whole situation described above, as if it is the way things have to be and there is nothing to improve. Good thing I don't think about it much, because the whole oil situation really sucks and we are getting ripped off big time every way you look. It would be a lot cheaper to be robbed on the street once in a while, getting your wallet emptied, than cheated every time you fill up the gas tank.

There will always be a few dodos here who basically say "Yeah, screw us harder, cheat us more, don't defend the people from being ripped off, the powers that be are doing everything they should, and we're lucky not to have to pay $8 a gallon right now."

1st May 2008. Fuel prices Sydney Australia : cheapest $6.28
    Dearest  $7.08 au

I really don't know where the whimsical price of $3.42 a gallon  US comes from! That would be 75.3 cents a litre........... Can't remember when it was that cheap late 80'?!!!!!

hotaka has quoted the kind of money non USA is paying!!!!   You guys have nothing to complain about!

Exchange rate $1 USA = 93.8659 Aus.........go figure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  we are only 6 cents short of $ for $    even in US currency we are paying double what you are! Exactly what is your promlem? (smile)
  • lfbno7 said on Apr 30, 2008....
I wonder if everything is expensive in Australia because of the distance it must travel to get to you. I know that Hawaii is very expensive to live in for that reason.
  • rupert7 said on May 01, 2008....
Ifbno7, I don't know, most countries have prices similar to Australia except the USA which seems to be complaining because it has to pay as much as half the price most of the rest of the world pays!!

We produce quite a bit of our own fuel but we pay a high tax on our fuel. OPEC seem to dictate what our fuel costs, even that produced in Australia! What can ya do!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • hotaka said on May 01, 2008....
Ifbno7 and rupert7  (what's up with the 7s?), in Canada, those living close to the border routinely cross over to buy gas because it has been much cheaper in the US for... as long as I can remember. And now with the dollars being almost par it's really cheap to drive over and buy gas.

Yes, I agree that nothing is being done by the governments. People in Japan were saying it's an abuse of power, this taxing gas. I can't understand why we can't use oil from other places. There are other places.

You know, I can remember when 85 cents per litre was outrageous. I can even remember not that many years ago filling up in Japan for 110 yen per litre and thinking it was more expensive here than in Canada. But seriously, what can be done? Stop buying gas? Go fuel cell? I don't feel like driving with these prices but it seems that even in expensive Europe people just swallow it and drive anyway. Cut back on other living expenses as they say over here.

Oh, yes, and what we are paying for can be seen in Dubai where they made islands to look like the continents and are planning to build rotating apartments, the world's highest structure and other visions of the future with our gas money.

Chavez might be my new best friend...as far as gas is concerned.  .12 cents per gallon!  Imagine asking for $5 in your tank and getting change back because your tank is full!!!
  • hotaka said on May 01, 2008....
silverW, it's about 30 cents, give or take depending on the exchange rate, but still about 30 cents based on standard of living. So there are almost 4 litres to a gallon then imagine having to pay an additional $1.15 or so per gallon. The SUV people are hurting the most!

    daily, Chavez?
  • silverwhisper said on May 02, 2008....
o wow, the USD/JPY exchange rate is quite different from what i thought! egads, yes, that's a pretty damned serious difference all right!

where i live, the prices are staying steady at $3.71.
  • hotaka said on May 15, 2008....
They are slowly climbing here again a couple of yen per month. When will it end?
  • silverwhisper said on May 18, 2008....
it will end when the stock market improves and people no longer put money in commodities such as oil, which is the typical response in bear markets.

In the meantime they are constructing an 800 metre-high tower in Dubai. I hope I can visit for free. Afterall, whenever I rent a car I contribute a little towards that tower when I fill up the tank.
