In my little concrete garden to day, we stayed, me and the kids. It is sheltered and it was so warm and the sun was shining. It was such a good day. When we had, had enough of that we decided to go and feed the ducks. Here are some pictures I took today. Þór is playing this game for the first time.

At the cities pond. Oh it was cold there and the ducks were not hungry. We went elsewhere.
Sumarbyrjun 005

We came to a pond in the west side of town. It was too cold there. The house with the black roof is a museum now, belonging to Iceland's national museum. It is a medical museum but the doctor over the whole county in the 1700's lived there. This is one of the first stone houses in Iceland.

It was windy there. The north wind blowing

View from the west side of town. Here we see the low mountains of the Reykjanes peninsula. On the other side we have higher mountains. But there is one there that I love to look at.  .

When we came to the botanic garden a little fellow sat on the fence and sang for me. Do you see him? The weather was much better in this part of town. The mountain shelters it when we have north wind. Just like my part.

I heard Daria saying to the bird, what are you saying and it was just like the bird was talking to her. The little woman with the bread in the bad.

Yes, throwing bread crumbs.

Oh how this has brought back memories...
We used to take our children to feed ducks in our town's park every spring and summer. The lake there is known for its waterfowl - ducks, geese, swans - which shelter there. Every duck-hunting season more ducks arrive and wait out the short season, safe from hunters.
Families have always brought bread crusts n crumbs to feed the ducks. As soon as your car pulls up to park, the ducks start flocking around to scrounge!
Currently we are aware that bread is not a healthy food for ducks, or any water fowl for that matter but it doesn't stop people continuing what has become a multi-generational tradition for many families.
Thanks for the memories! Love the photographs!

Wow, Skald! Your grandchildren have grown a lot since you first posted pics of them. Those mallards with the green heads are so beautiful but then all your pics are lovely.

Infernal.  I´ve been thinking of you because I don't know if I mentioned you on Polars post. I really meant to.  Thanks. I like  the botanic garden tool. It has another section where the plants are.
Tappa.  Welcome on my blog. This is the first time I see you and I am sure going to look at your blog.  I am so glad this brought memories to you. Where do you live?

I had completely forgotten about bread not being healthy for birds but they sure like it. Thanks for the comment.
Botoni,  My friend always good to see you. I guess they have grown but as I am always with them I have not noticed. The greenheads are the men. The men are more beautiful than the women lol
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Apr 26, 2008....
No worries, skald. :) I know I have your friendship. You've taught me a lot about Iceland and how beautiful it is, and you're like me - very family-centered. :)

Beautiful pictures as always, Skald. The children are growing so fast, as Botoni said.
  • secretlife said on Apr 26, 2008....
when we were little my dad would take us to feed the ducks-
but now in NJ they are considered 'pests', and believe it or not, it's 'illegal' to feed the ducks at all the ponds here.  i believe this happened because of the large amounts of canadian geese that live here year round.

anyway, your pictures brought sweet memories of my childhood back too.

    thank you!
  • skald said on Apr 26, 2008....
Infernal. I am so glad and thank  you.
Twy.  Hello my dear. Children grow to fast. Mine both are in their 30's lol  And I feel 29. Thanks for the comment .
Secret.  It is sad about this world. Everything is illegal these days. Is it not sad?  I wonder where these geese are from that live the whole year around here and eat grass when it is available. In the 70's the starling came and has stayed ever since. In other countries it goes south in sujjel

  • skald said on Apr 26, 2008....
Secret. Something crazy was happening and I could not correct the nonsense. I was going to say that the starling goes south in other counties but not here.  Thank you for the comment. I am glad it reminded you of your tours with  your dad.

In the one picture with the green heads (mallard drakes) it looked like a field of crops in the background. I am sure they had been harvested, but do you know what crops they mostly grow there skald?

The picture of por is amazing, I cannot make out what is happening in that picture, it looks good enough to be entered into a photo contest though skald.

Great pictures as usual, thanks so much
  • secretlife said on Apr 26, 2008....
yes, it is sad, and for a few years, when my children were little i still took them to those ponds and fed the ducks....imagine needing laws to control the geese?

but it's gotten so bad here....they are everywhere and make such a mess!

last summer i noticed there was a family of mallard ducks down at the seashore near where we stay....we still bring them breadcrumbs...
  • skald said on Apr 26, 2008....
Mobil. Sorry I honestly don't know. I wish I did. Would you believe some one is shooting firecrackers  I write this and it is only allowed  e between Dec 27 and  Jan  28th. What gown her is rye of course some more things.I  wish I could be of more help.

Secret. I have just been thinking when I see the geese eating grass all over that they are doing damage , Glad you bring the duck breadcrumbs.

skald, great pictures as always, I've often heard the saying  " a picture paints a thousand words and I believe it." I can tell that you are really enjoying your life from the pictures and stories you tell us. I speak for us all in thanking you for sharing. We appreciate the time and trouble it takes to put these posts together.
I remember taking my niece's son to a park in Baltimore, Maryland. He had a loaf of bread to feed the ducks and gooses. Everything was going good he a had a big smile on his face. The birds were enjoying the bread. I don't know what kind of gooses they were but they had a big lump on their foreheads and stood as tall as he was.  When Corey ran out of bread he told the gooses that he was sorry but I'm out of bread.  They did'nt like that , they stared running after Corey. They chased him all the way back to the car. I was laughing uncontrolably. I wish I would have had a cam corder or camera with me.  Corey was about the same age as Þór at the time.   Stay safe skald and keep on keeping on.
  • skald said on Apr 27, 2008....
Kyle.  Thanks Kyle. Yes, it is a nice place.
Cry.  yes, it is nice going to the park, in good weather, is it not.
Sweet, So good seeing  you again. I love that view too even thought it was best to see it out of the window yesterday. lol
Cayenne.  I was just thinking this when I posted. Our saying is like this a picture is richer than a story. Now, I love stories but I like telling the story in pictures. Especially to people who don't know the settings.

Thanks for the story. This is what also happened to me and my friend Systa when we were 8. The geese attached us and boy was I frightened. I ran like the devil was on my heels. If I can put it like that. I don't know the kids either. I think that there is just one kind here.
Thanks so much for your comment.

It looks like you all had a wonderful day spite the cold air.  The first photo of the ducks look more like snow geese or swans?  The botanical garden must be beautiful in the spring and summer months.  A good place to go for a walk?  Yes, I agree, the kids are growing too fast it seems.  Thor looks like he is going to be tall like his father.. tall and slender?  thanks for taking me along on your day ~
  • skald said on Apr 27, 2008....
Quiet.  They are swans. Yes, the botanic garden is a good place to go walking. It is sheltered and flat. Many old couples go there. It is so nice to see them. And people all ages are there too. I think Þór could very well become tall and slender. He is tall and slender for now for this age. I was happy to take you along Quiet.
  • wombat said on Apr 27, 2008....
Great pictures of a great day--even if windy and cold.  I love the last one of Thor in the sprinklers between the walls--what great art work!  I could sit on that bench (in the 9th one) all day and into the evening....well, especially in your country where it sometimes doesn't get full dark!
  • skald said on Apr 27, 2008....
Wombie.  Yes, sitting on the bench there in good weahter would be just great. If the wind was still but not yesterday. OOff. That is what we call window weather. Great to look out of the window but not to be out.

In the garden it was different as we did not have much wind there. It was good. When I saw Thor standing behind this art piece and the water was transparent of course, I thought this would be a good motive for a picture. So I took it and i was rather pleased. lol Thanks for mentioning it.
  • wombat said on Apr 27, 2008....
skald: You're welcome.   I like that phrase "window weather!"  I will be sure and slip it into a conversation when I can!

Wombie.  lol It is used a lot here.
Dia.  Big smile on my face. Thanks
Walking. So good to see you. Oh I know exactly what you mean. When the battery is gone or the bird is gone. That happens to me too. lol  Oh you mean the battery latch. That was really bad.

Walking  I would say that it is impossible.
Ginger.  Hello Italian girl, good to see you. I listened to your beautiful language yesterday as there was an Italian film. don't know the name of it anymore but it was about a doctor who loved a girl named Italia and his daughter who had, had and accident on her motor bike.
It must have been fun seeing your daughter run after the duck. I bet she was ever so cute then. And I bet she is a beautiful young girl of 12 now. Thanks Ginger.
Daily.  I sure would like to go for a walk with you. That would be fun. ((((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))
Moon.  lol me like this. I've never had a duck. not that I can remember. lol
  • gingersoul said on Apr 27, 2008....

Skald...oh, you watched a good movie...the title in Italian is 'Not ti muovere' ..meaning "Dont move" ....i dont know under which title they distributed in Iceland...

Yes, its a beatiful story and the book is even better....Margaret Mazzantini is the author..if you happen to read it, please do ..

I am amazed by this coincidence because only few days ago i was thinkingof re-reading tge book...and here you are talking about it.....

    Thank you...yes, she is a gorgeous girl...and if you tell her to run after the ducks now she would look at you like "Moooom......soooo no cool".....lol....{hugs}

  • silverwhisper said on Apr 28, 2008....
skald, what extraordinary pictures! i was really struck by those first few pictures of thor--you captured him in mid-air and i think pictures like that always convey motion and energy particularly well. for some reason, it never occurred to me that hopscotch is played by kids everywhere, so that was particularly cool. :>

darn it, skald, you really need to work out some kind of arrangement with the tourism bureau! :>

    ed
  • skald said on Apr 28, 2008....
Ginger. That is exactly the film I saw and it was very good. The main actors I've seen in many films before. The title was don't move and the Italian title was given too. They always give the original title and I am glad that we get the films in their original language with subtitle. It they put another language to it a lot is lost to my way of thinking. I'll remember Margaret Mazzantini. Thank you.

Lol it is not so long a go that my boys woudl say  Mooom ...... so no cool..... or something with the same meaning.         But mamma ......
Ed. Yes, children all over play the same games. I better speak wiht the tourism bureau, lol  Tahnks Ed

What can I say I Love nature
  • skald said on May 08, 2008....
Italia.  Sorry to hear that. This seems to be happening everywhere. Here too but we are so few and there is so much nature left. I love it too. Thanks for telling me. We are loosing a hill that was in walking distance from us. There is just a little part left of it. There I would hear the birds sing. Yesterday I was there and I was surprised to hear some sing still but there are new settlements all around belonging to the next town and this one. I live on the boarder of two towns that have grown into each other a long time ago. I also live in the capital of Iceland.
