One of my pet peeves is excessive or redundant packaging.  I'm sure everyone has seen it or experienced "the pain" of it.  I could use the soap box of being "green" to rail against it, but in reality it's more of a childhood psychosis.

For as long as I can remember my mom has been a redundant packager.  I didn't know this until I was sent to boarding school.  Up to this point the things she gave me were unshipped or unmailed.  When I lived in the dorm she would send cards with money and care packages.  I loved them, but the first few moment of receiving them were always frustrating to me.  My mother would cover every package in that clear thin wide tape.  Every inch.  Literally encasing the package and there never seemed to be a seam sloppy enough assist me in unraveling it.

I often wondered if she was sitting at home.  Giggling hysterically thinking of me, face red, steam pouring out of my ears, cursing her when I received the package.  When I first saw Family Guy and the character of Stewie I nearly peed my pants because he was the epitome of how I felt about my mother growing up.

Apparently this left me emotionally scarred.  Now every time I get a box or letter and someone tapes or otherwise makes it difficult to break into it I feel a case of package rage coming on.  I even hate when a person uses one of those inter-office envelopes and despite the little string and button closure they use tape and/or staples to close it.  Blister packs and those rigid clear plastic boxes often cause me to swear.  Excessive packing materials and those little plastic straps used to hold things on card packaging are "of the devil".

I know as psychosis goes this is a mild one.  Probably shared by more people than I would imagine.  Does anyone here understand share it?

hahahah im not that bad about packaging i spose..then again i ususally just bite open what i cant take off myself..=P
of course when that doesnt work i usually throw things xD
i always thought that was my impatience and temper though..

hinana - it's mental cruelty to packing things so it's difficult to get them out.  I nearly beheaded a barbie that had those plastic strap thingies.
  • hinana said on Apr 23, 2008....
LOL oh yeah those are the WORST.
especially since its normally little kids who are supposed to be getting them untied.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 23, 2008....
hinana - what happened to the good old days when they came in a box and you simply opened the box and it fell out?!!!  ARgghh!

i'm guessing someone got sued.......over what? i'm at a loss....but that's my guess as to what happened to the good old days.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 23, 2008....
Fallyn - I'm thinking that "shrinkage" (more commonly known as shoplifting) has spurred a lot of these difficult packaging strategies.
  • diabolicdame said on Apr 23, 2008....
That really is annoying! Especially for an impatient person like me.. I can totally understand your frustration with this! I mean covered with clear tape all across.. every inch? While I'm your mum had the best intentions, thats enough to leave life long emotional scars on anyone! lol..
Oh and the plastic strap things on Barbies!!! I hated those!
My uncle recently couriered me a couple of sweaters and they were packed in a cloth bag that was stitched shut on all sides all the way through.. (It looked like a cushion) and then put into a big envelope and taped across the flap. I was about to explode when I received it!!

DD - I'd have been tempted to gnaw on the stitches with my teeth.  That's just insane!!
  • secretlife said on Apr 23, 2008....
    i'm guilty of doing this.
i always think the damn tape won't hold, so i tape, and tape, and tape.......
the post office guy usually thinks it's funny.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 23, 2008....
SL - OH NOOOOOO!!! You're one of "them"!!!  If one piece of tape isn't going to hold, why would more pieces of tape help?  More is not always better.
  • secretlife said on Apr 23, 2008....
i even wrap it ui- around and around and around every single seam.
    it's re-in-force-ment.
    LOL, no???
  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 23, 2008....
SL - Maybe as you see it.  But in my eyes it's tor-tur-ous.  You're the kind of person who motivates me to keep a box cutter in my desk drawer.
  • Fallyn said on Apr 23, 2008....

    UI yeah....shrinkage makes sense.

i'm usually guilty of under wrapping....whenever i take something to the post office they usually put more tape on.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 23, 2008....
Fallyn - I am paranoidly careful to leave sections of every box carefully tape free.  Envelopes only get enough tape to keep them sealed, but corners exposed.  Yeah, I know, a real neurosis.

    You're right, Uni!  It's annoying!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 23, 2008....
pickers - bless you!!!  someone who understands!
  • pickersplock said on Apr 23, 2008....
    Oh, don't mention it!
    Some people are just sadistic!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 23, 2008....
pickers - so I should campaign for kinder gentler packaging?
  • pickersplock said on Apr 23, 2008....
I don't think it will help!

Don't you hate it too, when you open a bottle of asprin or something, and you have to take off the little plastic doohicky, then you get the top off and have to rip through the foil top, and then take the cotton out?  That drives me banans!

that's something your mother NEVER wanted you to know she was doing unique :-)

My whole family over wraps things, but my sister screwed up big time one Christmas. I was working on a cattle ranch and Mom and Sis figured I'd like some homemade cookies and fudge.

Well my sister put them in a metal tin and covered it with a shopping bag with scotch tape and the address. I worked at the Harrison ranch and the tin went to someplace close to that name.

When it got to me, I had a piece of the shopping bag with my name on it and a small piece of tape holding that piece of paper to the tin top. Nothing, no cookies, no fudge. Screw that Uni, I rack em, stack em and pack em now....tape the daylights out of them. I was so sad .

I just hate it when I buy a small electronic device, say a micro SD, that comes in this large plastic package, double-sealed, one that can be opened only with a screw driver and big enough to hold a GI Joe figure.

In Japan you get excessive packaging because it looks nice. But just opening a box of cookies means you fill up your paper recycling bag all at once. Make it look nice, sure, but keep it simple.

By the way, my sister accused me for years of using too much tape on packages. In Japan they can fold up the paper in a way so that only one small piece of tape is needed. I wish I knew how to do that.

i have no idea what's behind this... =)

pickers - I often have a much bigger headache by the time I've gotten past all of their security measures.  Some times I think it might be easier to pound my head against a wall.

trav - The day I figured out what a passive agressive bitch she was explained a lot of my childhood frustrations.

mobil - I think it had less to do with bad packaging than opportunistic looting.

hotaka - yeah, I get the electronic packaging thing.  I'd like to know how to do the fancy folding too.  Would save a lot of frustration.

queenie - no agenda, no packages, just a plain old fashioned neurosis.

  • pickersplock said on Apr 24, 2008....
    Yep, me too!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 24, 2008....
pickers - there may be a future in wall padding.  You know, so if you can't get the aspirin open you won't bloody up the walls.
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 24, 2008....
    [chuckle]

i totally get where you're coming from on this, u-i. :> i don't have a particular hate on for over-packaging--except as relates to electronics. seriously, is it really necessary to put all electronic components into molded plastic that's almost as hard as metal?!
